Words from the Real Woo-Guy Then, shortly after the song’s three-minute mark, when he’s entering realms of guitar wankery that would make Robert Johnson buy his soul back from the devil because he realizes it wasn’t worth it Clapton starts wailing on these triplet A-major slides over and over and over, and each repeated triplet is like a masturbatorial stroke urging the entire audience towards a collective climax. And as usual, I was premature. And alone. He does one triplet. Two triplets. Three triplets. FOUR triplets! By the fifth triplet, I completely lose my shit. And I shout, “Woo!”

What'll you do when you get lonely And nobody's waiting by your side? You've been running and hiding much too long. You know it's just your foolish pride. Layla, you've got me on my knees. Layla, I'm begging, darling please. Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind. I tried to give you consolation When your old man had let you down. Like a fool, I fell in love with you, Turned my whole world upside down. Layla, you've got me on my knees. Layla, I'm begging, darling please. Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind. Let's make the best of the situation Before I finally go insane. Please don't say I'll never find a way And tell me all my love's in vain. Layla, you've got me on my knees. Layla, I'm begging, darling please. Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind. Layla, you've got me on my knees. Layla, I'm begging, darling please. Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind.

The question is not whether or not this version is "better than the original." It's a question of whether, having already DONE the original, Clapton could come up with some way of doing the song that made it WORTH having a second recording of it in his major-album catalogue. It doesn't matter whether you prefer this version, with its perfect moody swagger, or the original with Duane's soaring slide and the incredible piano coda by the tragically troubled Jim Gordon. What matters is that each version gives us something that the other doesn't, making BOTH versions of the song indispensable. I can't think of another artist who has done such a powerful transformative cover of their own song. Maybe Mark Knopfler, in his 1986 "Calypso verison" of So far Away, comes close. But this is a one-of-a-kind redux.

The first had the genius of Duane Allman but this version is way more melodic and brings out more emotion and yes this is the best version imo.

First song I thought myself on guitar...every damn note, I had played piano for 9 years, rated master level, but I young, and felt guitar was cooler, but so does millions of kids,, I wish I had never walked away from piano, could taught lessons, played for anyone, did twice...Sometimes a few would say i was savant like, but clapton, he's a savant, the best use of cords other players never even imagine...Clap is the best, . not steavyey ray vaughan, not hendrix.....claptons pianist was a legend among musicians.Chuck Luvell

One of my favorite Eric Clapton songs, but I favor the electric guitar version. 2 yrs ago when my sister asked me for a name suggestion for her unborn girl, this was my first and only name suggestion. I LOVE this song.

George Harrison: This is an awesome song man, what's its name? Eric Clapton: I'm in love with your wife. George: Wait, what? Eric: Layla, it's called Layla.

This song is actually about his love and affair with Patti Boyd - George Harrisons (of the Beatles) wife. Whom Eric eventually married. He likened all of this from the poem about Layla and Majnun of Persia and their affair. I named my daughter after this song and found out all of this from my doctor while I was in labor. Turned out he was right!

For those that are unaware the song Layla is about the USS Layla. A ship that sank during a storm off the coast of Brazil in 1898. The entire crew went down with the ship along with a shipment of gold that was rumored to be on board. Knowledge is power

Not even close. Layla was inspired by 2 things 1st a Arabic story about a 7th century poet called Layla & Majnun. Basically this story was one of the original versions of Romeo & Juliet first written around 1200 AD (800+ years ago and 400 years before Shakespeare). The 2nd thing the song is based on was Clapton fell in love with Pattie Boyd who at the time was married to George Harrison (lead guitarist from the Beatles). The song came out in 71, Boyd divorced Harrison in 77 and married Clapton in 79. I tried to give you consolation When your old man had let you down Like a fool, I fell in love with you Turned my whole world upside down
