This is amazing...it is not about winning, but the spirit of Olympic. He might not have win, but his determination to participate worth more than a Gold medal. If you're a true sportsman you will understand all this determination. I'm surprised at how uniformly positive the comments are for this. I don't see what's admirable about an apparent beginner swimming what amounts to nothing more than an exhibition. It's a non-competitive side show. Associating this in any way with the real contest of the games is an insult to the competitors who have devoted their lives to the sport.

His start was actually not too bad. I like how he did the first 50 m. His technique was all over the place, for sure, but he showed a lot of energy. You could see he was struggling big time in the last 25 m, but he gave everything he had and that's what the olympics are all about. Saying that he showed true olympic spirit is not being cheesy. It's just the truth. Considering his situation at the time, I think 1:52 is a perfectly respectable score. And he improved drastically in the next 4 years.

And man, that pool, biggest thing i've ever seen, and TV cameras EVERYWHERE? If their country didn’t have anyone who could represent, why even put someone who could just embarrass himself? Eric Moussambani of Equatorial Guinea had no professional experience as a swimmer, having only trained in hotel pools and local rivers. He soon found himself in a very strange spot when all of his opponents were disqualified for false starts during the men’s 100m freestyle heats at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. In true Olympic spirit, Moussambani pushed past the cramps and pain of swimming for the first time in a full-size Olympic pool. And despite receiving an awful time of 1:52.72, he was the first person in his country’s history to ever complete the 100m freestyle. - margaretolson
