Thank you for reviewing this great Sequencer more in-depth. I love all that it can do however, not so thrilled about downloading/uploading & having to update all that software into it. I'm new to this and have never done that to a module before....I am currently searching for an inexpensive Laptop Computer so I can record my Soundscapes and be able to upgrade Modules as well as finally update my Keystep so I will have a sequencer again! I diggity-doo find your Soundscapes from this video very well done. Now play some more Drum centered sounds. Nobody really focuses on Percussion & Drums in Eurorack/Modular Videos that I can find. That's an area I actually require a bit more knowledge about. Keep up your groovin' videos Mister...they always bring a much needed smile. 💥🙉💡🐾🌌

Thanks Eleni. The loading of firmware is simply a matter of putting a file on the little SD card and it will update itself. Units being sold now will have the latest version already running so you wouldn't have to do anything. I'll see if I can do something on drumming some time soon.

Great video. Always a shame to see people dismiss noise as a useful modulation source though. Small amounts of noise modulation can bring so much character, and the fact that the black sequencer can do a sequence of tuned noise as a modulation source is so interesting.

So far rocking my Winter Modular Eloquencer and WMD Metron sequencers both are superb for melody and percussion. That case is beautiful. What is that? I mean brand. I can see it's a case for eurorack modules. Really excellent explanation and tutorial. I thought I was saving up for the five12 Vector sequencer but not so sure about that anymore as this one seems much more comprehensible than I thought it would be. I got myself the Erica Sample Drum (why is it called drum? It's so much more!) and that thing is excellent and so intuitive as I didn't even need to read the manual. I got the 4ms sampler from before and it is easy enough to use but compared to the Erica sampler it is, sorry to say, not nearly as good imo.

Great video about this sequencer. Thanks for sharing this. Is the song mode different to different channels? In this video you are just using Ch1. Can this sequencer use more than 4 gate/trigger outputs? Example if I want to use gate 1-4 and mod 1-4 as a trigger outputs so I could have total 8 trigger outs for drums and main 4 cv to modulation.

I had a lot more time without having a kid, but now, I think I will never truly learn the NerdSeq with limited time, so for me, the Black Sequencer is better.

Hello everyone, I recently got a Black Sequencer and I can't figure out one thing: when I want to copy a pattern, for example, pattern #1 to pattern #5, and I'm in ch1, the sequencer also copies the patterns from the other channels, meaning pattern #1 from ch2 to #5. It doesn't make sense to me. Where am I going wrong?

Robin, in this review, I noticed you only use MIDI for external transposing. I’m having trouble using an analog source to affect transposition. Do you know if that’s possible? My assumption would be that the “cv in” jack is what would be used and 1v/oct should suffice...But I don’t get anything when i try that. Have you tried this?

After watching this review and reading the manual, I still don't understand the microtonality support. The most pessimistic reading is that the device understands everything in terms of 1V octaves, that an octave always has 12 steps, and that each step can be detuned ±50 cents-rather less flexible than what can be accomplished by an angry piano tuner. The most optimistic reading is that the octave size can be generalised (by retuning C1 relative to C0), and that each pitch can be set to any multiple of a cent within the entire generalised octave-but still with a restriction to 12 tones per generalised octave, and you still have to enter data by detuning 12TET, so you'll need your calculator by your side. Those both seem like missed opportunities given that the restrictions are almost certainly imposed by the user interface to what is already a specialist mode, rather than the engine, but the latter seems much less like a strike against the design, so it would be nice to know which. Speaking of frustration with manuals, I'm also constantly annoyed by documentation that says “we support useful clock ratios” but don't specify e.g. whether the maker considers odd numbers greater than 3 to be “useful”. How much 5 against 11 is there in the world? Not a lot. Do I want more? Yes please. In both these cases it seems like an extra shift state to get a hairier input mode would all but(*) solve the problem: where I need to enter a clock ratio or a frequency ratio, just let me hold down an extra button to enter n/m with arbitrary n and m. (Er, the specific proposal is that wherever you spin the encoder to choose a relative note or a frequency multiplier/divider, you can shift-spin it to get something with options {[common values], integers, /2, /3, /4, /5, …}; if you release it on any setting other than [common values] you then specify the numerator {1/, 2/, 3/, …}). Oh, yeah, and include the “octave” size as part of the scale, if it isn't already, with 2/1 as a mere default. I don't think you sacrifice anything useful about the “grid” by doing this, and you open up a world of possibilities. (*) You still face problems when you have a lot of active pitches in a generalised octave, but that seems to be a question of running out of buttons? Running out of buttons is an inevitable problem in any sequencer design that doesn't use a continuous input surface, I guess, though even then with rotary encoders available I'd hope we could do better. Or, yeah, perhaps I've misunderstood everything.
@MoltenMusicTech
3 жыл бұрын
I think you have very specific requirements and you'll probably need to talk to Erica Synths about them. What I can tell you is that you can create a Quantization scale where each note can be set + or - 50 cents and so anything you create will be bound to the tuning you've set. Does that help?
@stephenspackman5573
3 жыл бұрын
@@MoltenMusicTech Yes, I think this is somewhere around my bleaker reading-providing detuning of an underlying 12EDO model, but very far from what you'd get out of something deliberately oriented towards microtonal users (e.g. Ornament & Crime).
