Erik Satie, a French composer, coined the term gnossienne, which doesn't have any real meaning in French, and was never used before Satie slapped it on three highly experimental, yet beautiful, works of piano literature.
This piece, the first of three, has no time signature, and therefore no measures or subdivisions. The only hint Satie gave us was one word: Lent, which, in French, simply means slow.
