"Erika" is a marching song used by the German military. The song was composed by Herms Niel in the 1930s, and it soon came into usage by the Wehrmacht, especially the Heer. No other marching song during World War II reached the popularity of Erika. "Erika" is both a common German female name and the German word for heather. The lyrics and melody of the song were written by Herms Niel, a German composer of marches. The exact year of the song's origin is not known; often the date is given as "about 1930", a date that, however, has not been substantiated. The song was originally published in 1938 by the publishing firm Louis Oertel in Großburgwedel. It had been popular prior to the start of World War II. The song encourages hard work, and according to Michael Tillotson, no other marching song during World War II reached the popularity of Erika. It was exclusively played at large political events. The song begins with the line "Auf der Heide blüht ein kleines Blümelein" (On the Heath a Little Flower Blooms), the theme of a flower (Erika) bearing a soldier's sweetheart's name. After each line, and after each time the name "Erika" is sung, there is a three beat pause, which is filled by the kettledrum or stomping feet (e.g. of marching soldiers).

I just imagine a battlefield where there is a German soldier who just got hit by artillery, he’s alive but in critical condition, his breathing is slow, you can hear his heavy heart beat and breathing, he looks around the battlefield to see explosion everywhere, the sky is red, shouting and screaming in the distance, fellow German soldiers and even allied soldiers just getting mauled by bullets, all of this with just this song playing, all other sounds are muffled. His breathing gets slower, then he blacks out.

POV: You’re a German WW2 veteran, you have tried to live a good life, you hope god shows mercy on your soul when you finally pass. You’re laying in a hospital bed in some German town/city, specifics don’t matter, you’re about to die. You start having one of those end of life hallucinations, you’ve heard of them, anyway, this starts playing in your head. You’ve lived good, you didn’t do anything overly horrific in world war 2, but still, you fought for Adolf Hitler, you weren’t conscripted either, you were a volunteer. The somber tone makes you think it might be coming from Hell, but you weren’t that bad were you? Maybe it’s just muffled sounds from heaven. You pray it is the second option. You start seeing things, apparently you’re coding, the nurse is on her rounds so there’s no one in the room to stop it. You look up and things start to get white, you think you see dark shapes in the white cloud, the outlines get clearer... are those your old comrades? You’re finally going to join the rest, you are the last of your company after all. God really did show mercy.

I was working on an old man’s house, had horse hair insulation in the walls, and dirt basement, I was singing this song while I was working, not knowing he had heard me and came to the basement, when I noticed him he said “you know that song well” and I could tell he knew it as well.

For some reason, that's how I imagined what UnBerlin would be like or sound like. (similar to Unlondon or SCP-1678 except it's in Germany)
