I was lucky enough to see him once at the Old Fruit Market in Glasgow (2006). I was shivering through the entire performance. He was not only a superb musician but also a fantastic person with a tremendous depth. No dislike for this video. No wonder. It's simply impossible to not like this masterpiece :-)

Esbjorn had a fantastic feeling of polyphony and the differenciation of hands. And the ingenious sense of musical timing. By the way, I use to show this composition to my students as an example of complex three-part form with passacaglia in the 1st part and in the reprise and with intonational reminiscences of them with the contrasting middle part wich is of episode-type. And note that the reprise of the passacaglia's bass theme is superimposed on the ending of the middle part - so-called combined reprise. One of the most ingenious compositions of E S.T.

@Mary Mctavish Umm...no. Talent is essential of course, but here's a quote from the bass player, Dan Berglund, in the Irish Times, after Svensson's death: “I was in another band around the time I joined the trio but I chose the trio because I felt it was more my kind of music and I thought we had the potential to go further than my other bands. Of course, achieving this involved a lot of work and we spent a lot of time trying to break through." Not only is the music timeless and the performance fantastic, but the modernist set, the filming filming ,all those cables on stage - give it a nice '70s retro vibe. Some cadences of the solo section remind me of 'Blue in Green/Autumn Leaves' changes.

Much of EST's music is to my taste predominantly cerebral rather than emotional and as a consequence, less rich than it should be. i.e. it is diverting rather than also moving. Compare and contrast for example Bill Evans on my foolish heart. It nevertheless possesses enough muscular vitality to ensure one keeps on listening.
