It is WILD to me that I decided to get back into EV Nova, and only THEN found this video. Absolutely, this game was a piece of my child-hood. It lead me down a rabbit hole leading to Elite and Traveller and other games like it. Have to agree, btw. The Pirate Storyline is, imo, the best of the bunch. It also really helps that one of the ways to get into it, the Wild Geese storyline, actually does a good job of setting you up for some emotional investment in the plot.

I have so many great memories of this series and its successors. From blindly completing hundreds of missions to upgrade my ship in the original only to run into the shareware wall, to waiting days for EVN to download via dialup, learning the tricks and playing every faction, downloading mods and trying to make my own, playing the excellent ARPIA2 mod, and now spending time following the Endless Sky development.

The Polaris storyline was a bright spot in a dark time - 6th grade.

8:58 EVN was the first game that got me into modding and so could be cited for how I got into software development as a career, and one of the reasons why I was able to get into modding as a dumbass high school kid was because Matt's tech bible detailing how the engine worked was so thoroughly well documented but at the same time approachably written. many years later I have still yet to see as good documentation in my professional life lol

I'm a sucker for EVNova content. I think one of the most surprising things to me is just how good the ship designs are. ATMOS may just have crafted the best looking set of ships in any game, or even sci-fi media. If you look at Endless Sky, or NAEV, it's just not even close to nearly as good. And this actually holds for most movies and series I've watched. The Nova ships just looked _right_. Another thing that I think Nova did better than the open-source sequels is indeed this "Han Solo" type thing. Nova was utterly unbalanced (I mean the pirate valkyrie class IV? Ridiculous ship). But it being unbalanced really made it possible to play with the ships you liked, because almost anything could be made "good", especially with polaris tech. Endless sky in particular is kind of too much about escorts for me. All in all I think the top-down 2D design is also much more arcadey and instant-satisfaction than 3D-space, which is almost necessarily too big, and that's an underrated huge plus for Nova that hasn't really been picked up by serious games again.

@@Notalongthewall Agreed across the board. My two personal nemeses in this game have always been the Pirate Valk Class IV and the Pirate Starbridge D. I like the ship design and variety so much I originally had an entire section going faction by faction with ship breakdowns but I decided that was too in depth for this project. Thanks for the comment and your thoughts.

And that’s a great point re: 2D vs. 3D space. I think 3D space games can be overwhelming for new players in a way that Nova and its like avoided. Not only the vastness of space but also 3-axis movement, spinning, etc.

i had the pleasure of "working with" Dave Williams on the Arpia mod (and by working with I meant he would post previews in our dev forum and i'd go "wow" or "hell yeah" with no meaningful feedback) and man his creativity for ship design was so great
