I agree with your assessment. I did a lot of research and could not find a better deal for S35VN premium steel, from a premium knife maker, and US made on top of it. Many foreign made knives with higher end steels, but not up to S35VN, pushing the price I paid for this knife and sheath. I do not plan to baton with this knife, especially the size log where this knife broke in Randall's video.

The handle could be a half inch longer for us with large to extra large hands or thin the blade on the esee 4. The S35VN was definitely the worst stainless steel to go with and it's very brittle. The black scales don't interest me and they get too hot when out in desert.

I’ve had this knife for a couple of years. It feels good in hand. There are problems with it: the retention is awful. It makes me wonder if ESEE got the steel they ordered, and if the heat treat was correct. The steel feels very hard, but I have not checked the RC on it. ESEE broke one in their testing which causes me to wonder about the treatment of the steel if it is what they claim it to be. A few cuts on a soft green pine branch dulled it considerably. A Buck 420HC will easily outperform the blade I received. 80crV2 will run circles around it wrt retention. However, this ESEE hand sharpens on a 600 diamond stone surprisingly easy, so all is not lost. I think the good fellows at ESEE were sold a batch of bad steel. The sheath needs redesigning - it puts the handle firmly into your rib cage.

I wonder if you just got a defective one. Also- i hate the clip as well, but luckily they are a very modular sheath with lots of options.
@musicmonster1992

I personally love the sheath/clip. I do agree that if you clip it to your belt the normal way, you'll find uncomfortable issues. But.. It's the perfect knife for upside down carry. I carry this knife on my belt and position it upside down. For me, it's easier in the case of a possible attack. Just pull the blade straight down, quick twist in the hand and you're already holding the knife in a defensive position, ready to fight. It takes some getting used to but once you're used to it, I guarantee you won't carry this knife the "normal way" ever again. ⬆ This style of carrying isn't for everyone, I understand that.. BUT the upside down carry is arguably one of the best positions to have the knife if you're strictly carrying for self defense. Obviously, the size of the knife plays a big factor too but this knife is the best size for upside down carry IMO.

I realize this video is quite old, but I wanted to tell you what I do with the finger choils on these. I take a mini fine grain file and work down about 3/16 of the sharp edge where my finger contacts that sharp point. It has worked well for me, and made it more comfortable. I don't miss that tiny bit of edge on the back side of the blade ever. I don't think I've ever cut anything with that part of a knife. Anyhow, hope this helps someone. Just a light smoothing on that sharp point is all it takes.

I like that ESEE-3 in S35VN but am not impressed with the sheath's inability to securely attach to a belt. Any ideas on where I can pick up a kydex sheath for this knife that will securely attach to a belt? Or maybe a leather sheath too. Thanks for the review.

I have used paracord as a belt loop on the esee sheaths before to good effect. My suggestions for a sheath, which i agree the E3 in s35vn does deserve, are all custom. I would, and likely will, either side it to NcCustom Leather, or Black Bear Custom Kydex, or Yellowhawk Custom Kydex, but these are custom options that will involve you sending your knife in.

Honestly,I’m more worried about y’all in NZ and Australia..from what I’ve seen on the news it appears they are pushing those lockdowns,masks and testing extra hard over there..I definitely can’t speak for everyone but I’m far more worried about what these tyrant governments are doing to our freedom than this “Covid 19” BS..I feel like the entire world is becoming more like China with each passing day,the US included..these riots are only happening because they are being allowed to happen.if they wanted they could shut this BS down along time ago.any other time in my life that riots started to break out they were stopped quickly.if they wanted they could clear an entire city block of thousands in a few minutes but it’s all being used to push political agendas..the BLM/Antifa BS is happening in cities with leftist democrat leadership.Governors and mayors are making the police departments stand down and when they actually do make arrest the crooked district attorneys are letting them back out on the streets..BLM/Antifa rioted everyday for over 100 days straight in Portland,Oregon and the Democrat leaders allowed it to happen but the other day when the Proud Boys(a right wing group) came to Portland to counter protest,the local leftist government declared a state of emergency.the Proud Boys have never been involved in a riot and rarely ever start the fight but they certainly defend themselves...personally,I’m not with any of this dumb shit,I don’t trust either the left or the right..everything is being turned into a political shit show and all the media does it stir it all up to further divide us but there is no doubt,these BLM/Antifa idiots are way out of line and so are these people in government that not only support it but allow it..they know where they can get away with that bullshit though and when they try to bring this garbage to the wrong area they will find themselves in a war that they will never win...I just hope it doesn’t have to come to that but if this isn’t stopped soon it’s gonna get bad because people are getting tired of it

I have never understood the point of a finger choil on a knife so small. You are losing the most important part of the cutting edge. Good comparisons👍 Good video👍
@kevinaguilar5482
3 жыл бұрын
Hi just curious as to why the end of the blade is the most important part of the cutting edge. I always thought the most important part of the blade was either the belly or the tip. Not an outdoorsman/prepper so I'd love to be enlightened
@stalwart263
3 жыл бұрын
@@kevinaguilar5482 You can apply more force under more control with this part of the blade. If you are cutting grooves into wood or pushing the blade through something tough then you want this part of the blade to be there, not be a finger choil. You can control this cut with a thumb on the spine of the knife. Go and cut an apple using then belly then this area. You will get more control near the handle. Of course the belly and the tip are important too. The belly for skinning or slitting and the tip for piercing but the hard cutting is done nearest to the hand. Basic physics.

I just got the S35 esee 3, it is my first "high end" non-custum backpacking fixed blade. I never bought one because I absolutely hate carbon steel! Nothing wrong with it, I just dont want to worry about rust. I own a lot of Benchmade, spyderco, and cold steel folders with steels from aus 8 to m390 and every other steel in between, the esse 3 in s35 is the sharpest knife (factory edge) I have ever bought. It is the only knife I didn't have to run through my Spyderco sharpmaker to get it razor sharp, my only complain is that it has too much belly, maybe they come up with a drop point version at some point in the future, but that's just my personal preference, still it is a masterpiece of a tool.
