Hey Donnie, what do you base your statement on regarding the better heat treat on the ESEE? I like the bulkier scales, longer blade, and much better price on the RAT. just curious about the heat treat statement. Thanks.
@DonnieBAllDay
3 жыл бұрын
The heat treatment process over at Esee is simply better done. Remember, the RAT series from Ontario was designed by the guys who formed Esee(Randalls Adventure and Training). They wanted to make the knives better than Ontario was giving their designs so they just went and did it themselves. They put more money into the build quality.

Great video Donny! I've had the RAT7 and I have an Esee 6. The Esee 6 just blows the OKC RAT7 out of the water. Been using my Esee 6 since I got it and have yet to sharpen it. The Ontario would dull fairly faster than my Becker BK7 since it was 1075 and have been 1075 since 2015 and the heat treat on certain knives are not the greatest. I also got chips on my RAT7 after just light use and I found I would have to sharpen it quite often after batoning and chopping after a day in the woods . I just can't believe I've held off on getting an Esee 6 for a long time, and here I thought I was getting a better deal! But man, the RAT7 is just the more inferior knife. The RAT7 is good for general bushcrafting, notches and stuff, a knife I would give to my kid over the more expensive Esee 6. The Esee can go through it all and still be hair shaving sharp. I just don't understand 1095 holding up this great, what kind of witchcraft is this??

By the process, hardening and testing. Companies like Esee and Tops have some of the best heat treats out there. They are equal to and even better than many of the high end blades out there. My Ontario took a small chip where my Esee has yet to need a resharpening.

I haven't had any problems with either companies steel and most others have not either. There is "great" 1095 and there is "best" 1095. How much better than "great" do you require? I would bet big money that if given a blind test, most would NOT know the difference in actual use. Either is a fantastic knife.
@DonnieBAllDay

@@billpeart I agree. Just because one is "better" doesn't make the other "worse". It just came down to needing to pick one. The Esee has the better warranty, sheath, fit and finish and heat treat. I did take a very minor chip in the RAT and even though it was very minor, the Esee did not. That's why one was better on video. That said, I would trust my life in the woods with the 7 any day of the week.

Both are fine knives but I agree that the 6 is just slightly better. The Esee came after the Rat 7 so the makers had time to perfect the knife. The Ontario handle issue is a quick fix with a dremel if you have some dremel skills of course. I've had the Rat 7 for a decade now and it's still holding up. I made my own kydex sheath to my liking and made some CF scales with orange liners because it just needed that makeover. The scales have been contoured to fit better in my hand. I also added gimping on the back of the scales. I've had the Esee only for a year and the only thing I did is build a new kydex sheath that's better than the oem one.

@@thethiefonthecross9092 Yeah you always see these type comments but they never actually tell you what they were doing to the knife when it broke or all the things they did to it BEFORE it broke. You see this a lot with the Kabar fighting knife too. "I broke my Kabar chopping a twig! it's a POS!"....come to find out later on before that happened they were chucking the knife into stumps for days, using it to pry open doors, batoned a truck load of knotty hardwoods, cross batoned massive trees, etc.....well, yeah, wtf did you expect was eventually going to happen? 🙃 This is all directly Nutnfancy's fault when he started making videos batoning massive logs in half with knives and his mind-numbing "steel should win over wood everytime" mantra in the early 2000's. Knives are for cutting, slicing, stabbing, and LIGHT batoning. Anything more than that then you need an AXE. Or a legit froe. I have both an ESEE 6 and a Kabar USMC and have put both of them through things I would definitely consider knife abuse. Neither of them were harmed in any way. I've never seen a more bias comparison!! He even hits things harder with the Esse!! And if the Esse does worse, he just ignores it, and moves on, usually by saying how great the Rat is!! This guy's one slippery character!! I might buy a Rat, or an Esse, or both, but i'd advise NO ONE buys anything off this dodgy dude!!

Who are you talking to? Your comment is to me genius. And bias? One is simply better than the other. Just like one out there is better than this. ALL knife reviews by ALL reviewers are based partly on fact and partly opinion. If you disagree so passionately, maybe you came to this video already bias yourself. The review is a template. I use these knives. I know ahead of time which are better in VS videos because I've already used them both. I'm not paid for this and I don't get my knives for free. I speak purely from knowledge of use. Use that goes far beyond this video. Wake up. Ancient heart? More like ancient brain.

I'm talking to you, and anyone else that's going to read this. Your information is basic at best. I'm ex military, and over half my platoon kitted themselves out with the Rat 7. Some of us did what some soldiers do, and we modified, and customised our Rats, and take it from me, there was little much to be done to them. Our government has OKC, supplying our forces with Tak 1's, and Rat 7's, along with other models of OKC knives. These knives have proven themselves in many combat arenas, both for taking lives, and saving them. The extra length of the Rat 7, is extremely effective for stabbing, and slicing flesh. It saved my life on many occasions, and it took lives on many aswell. The Esse is a civvy, prissy, consumer knife. Esse first run were made of Stainless steel, but they chose to cut costs by sourcing, and using cheaper 1095 Carbon steel, and yet you accuse, criticise, and berate OKC of doing the same thing! Esse charges a heck of a lot more bucks for their pretty knife aswell. The OKC doesn't need a life time warranty, they're virtually indestructible! That was proved in the field of combat. And whats with all your shaving? Have you tried shaving your throat with either knife? OCD? A lot of my buddies have PTSD, cos of what we've seen, and done for our country, and some of my buddies never came back, i was lucky to. I might be just an ex Jar head, but we're not Bone heads! Ancient brain, has ancient common sense. Donnie "B" All Day, that's some handle! Nicknaming yourself for sure. I take it the "B" is for "Bullsh*t". You get yourself more tattoos, and keep acting the big dog in your neighbourhood, cos your a funnyman, bet a lot of peaple laugh about you, and at you! Ever thought of going into show business??!! The armed forces need entertainers, keep our spirits up! Keep up with the vids, i might subscribe :).

@@W49Boowie I'm not sure if you actually watched the video. First off I too am a combat vet. I don't know what branch you served in but they supplied my Army unit with Gerber Infantry blades. As far as belittling Ontario for using 1095, that just shows you had your head buried in the snow while the review played. I said NOTHING to belittle the Rat. It's one of my favorites. Both of these are 1095 and that happens to be my preferred steel for survival blades. The Esee has a better sheath, better handle construction, better coating, better heat treat and a better warranty. PERIOD! If you need to make mods to your knife to make it work for you, you're using the wrong knife. You clearly have a soft spot for the Rat because it's what you had in combat. I feel the same way about my Gerber. I never even washed the blood off of it. But that doesn't make it better than the Esee. How many of them do you personally own and actually use in real world survival situations? How many shelters have you built? How much firewood have you processed? You can give your bleeding heart speech all you want but that's all it is. If your unit was issued the Cold Steel SRK and you saw the same action, you would defend that if someone said they preferred the Rat. I'm a knife tester, owner and user. I use survival knives for actual survival skills. Going through human flesh can be done with a sharpened spoon so don't give me your I used it in the military speech. We all used knives in the military. The Rat is better than the KA-BAR USMC but try telling that to any Marine it was issued to. Stop judging with your heart and actually study up on what makes one different than the other. You have no idea what you're talking about. I'll be sure to show this conversation the next time I'm in Vegas with 300 Rangers. They'll get a kick out of your combat badgering. Tell me something, how many missions did you run? How many soldiers did you have under you? No NCO talks about being in the military the way you do so I'm assuming you don't hold rank. If so stop all the cliche soldier talk. You make us look bad.

If you, and others, can have a laugh about servicemen losing their lives, well it makes you a sick f*ck, for one thing, and it's you who brings shame to us! As for the subject of knife/weapon customisations, that's been done for centuries. From basic filing an edge on your entrenching tool, to the reprofiling of a blade. I worked on my Rat, and ground a Bowie like, sharp false edge onto it, made it far more effective in hand to hand combat. As for ingnoring the advantage of the difference in blade length, well that's just stupid. As for the heat treat, well thats exactly the same as when Jeff Randell designed the Rat series with OKC, that's because Rowen stayed on at OKC, after Jeff Randell's contract ran out. and Rowen left OKC with the cryogenic heat treat technique. Rowen after a while left OKC, and then joined Jeff Randell's Esse. As for recent production of the Rat series, 2013, they have improved the quality control. I have an October 2017 manufactured one, ( and my army issued one ), and it has red liners under the micarta scales, the handles are far more finished aswell. Personnally i didn't find much of a problem with the handle ergonomics in the first place, as i have pretty big hands. Jeff Randell endorsed the Rat, because he did exhaustive research in the south american jungle with military units, and consulted with many other survival experts. OKC, is an ancient company, and has a proven track record. Will Esse stand the test of time? I think they probably will, because they produce good knives, but their price tags are a little on the high side as compared to equivalent products, e.g. the Rat 7. To be honest, both knives are slightly dated now. Esse have done very little to build on the Rat 7's design with the Esse 6. The general consensus is that they really come up equal, things like the slight difference in the lengths, and the fit and finish, although as i previously mentioned, OKC has addressed the handle, and yeah the sheaf isn't the best, but it's functional, and the Esse comes with a plastic sheaf, not even a Kydex one, a bit of a money saver on Esse's part, although plastic sheafs fair better in sub zero temperatures, because Kydex becomes brittle under those conditions, but given that you'd be very unlikely, and unwise to use either knife in severe cold given that the blade tang is flush with the handle, and in subzero temperatures, it will actually stick to your skin, and you may not be able to carry out every task gloved. The whole Esse 6 vs OKC Rat 7, is such a worn out subject. It's the most obvious two knife review to go for, but if done, it should be done by presenting as many details and information as possible, if not, you're not paying either knife the relevant credit, and merit, that they are due. God bless America.

@@W49Boowie Much better reply this time. But square yourself away on one thing. NO ONE said laugh at fallen soldiers. So don't put words in peoples mouths. Thats just the disgusting traits of politicians(Hillary). I was feeding off your contradictions. You said one didn't need a great warranty because it's so good. If it's so good, the company has no reason to fear adding a no questions asked warranty. Outside of that, you claimed it bias because I swung the Esee harder, yet the only edge to chip was the RAT. So your response would ONLY make sense if the Ontario chipped because I swung THAT one harder. You can't make your point by saying the RAT is better because it chipped under softer use. You clearly didn't pay full attention to the video because the only information I left the public with was that they are both worth buying but the Esee is better due to fit and finish and a better heat treat. Thats only if I have to choose just one. For the money, not to many can beat the RAT. I made that VERY clear. You also obviously missed my video on the Ontario big 3 where I talk about an amazing group of 3 Ontario blades. But hey, you and I are part of the REAL 1%'s in this country so I'm not hating on you in any way. THIS is what we fight and die for. Our right to be asses to each other over opinions. There are a lot of blades made better than the RAT, the same as there are better than the 6. But in THIS matter, I give a slight edge to the 6. As far as blade length being a difference? Shorter has more control, more precision. You only need a 3 inch blade to hit any major organ. I know this well. A 4 inch blade is perfect for combat applications when against a human. Longer blades only matter for utility usage and 5.5 inches is more than suffice. Be well brother.
