The gun he used to shoot the seal with was a pump-action shotgun, so it was 12 gauge, buck-shot most likely. The gun that the child was holding was a bolt-action rifle of some kind, however i can't figure out what kind and i would love to know. My best guess is a .22 (perhaps a Ruger?) since the bolt-handle seemed very small and would make sense as a starter gun for a kid.

Although the name "Eskimo" is commonly used in Alaska to refer to all Inuit and Yupik people of the world, this name is considered derogatory in many other places because it was given by non-Inuit people and was said to mean "eater of raw meat." ... However, the people of Canada and Greenland prefer other names. The movie makers 'dramatized' many scenes with music and rhetoric...Because they just don't understand that is was someone else's 'normal' and they simply got it done...In many rural and isolated areas around the planet..

@@khalidtheefirst I don't know the details but i would guess that the name eskimo is something "the white man" came up with. So not something these people were asked to be called. It shows the common idea back then, which was that the white "race" was smarter and sophisticated and had the right to "educate" or in this case name indigenous people. I think the word Inuit is preferred these days.

The final comments about the arctic becoming an easier place to live makes me laugh. There is massive unemployment in many of the northern cities with rampant alcoholism because of nothing to do. Sure being “educated” and “civilized” is so great but at what cost? Once people were happy with just a few possession and then civilization came to make things easier. Sure a rifle makes killing seals and caribou easier but then they had to trap animals that were usually left alone just to purchase the rifle and ammunition. But once there was a taste for “easier” the only way to get it was with money, hunting and gathering wasn’t enough. Now to have an “easier” life the Eskimo has abandoned their way of life, moved into towns, went into debt to get a house, don’t have enough work and get drunk because their is nothing to keep them busy (like hunting for food and making their own clothes and tools). Yep sure is easier now!?

Yes, i agree, i stayed in pond inlet for two years, between 2012-2014, all the older inuits were telling me the same things that you said, they were not happy. They say that the inuits had happy life before they got westernized by white man, and now they live completely different life and they arent happy. Its not like before, it was harder but the people were happier

Early Globalist propaganda as if it is such a good thing how these barbarians are adopting western globalist way of life. I mean what’s more comforting for a baby to be in a lonely prison of a cot or be snuggled between mum and dad inside a beautiful thick duvet? Or when did a woman need a mirror when all she had to do is see her husbands face and know that he adores her. Anyway globalisation is THE CANCER of our time. By the way being self reliant is the greatest commodity.

The Eskimo, like many other indigenous peoples, lived simple, hard-working lives that were deeply spiritual and satisfying to themselves. They weren't made, "better," by the presence of the Europeans. Often, all they brought was disease and pestilence. It's heartbreaking to think that much of the Eskimos traditional way of life has been forever lost, only fodder for tales of long ago. There have been movements in recent years to embrace and restore the traditions and culture of indigenous peoples worldwide, but I fear much has been lost to the passage of time, never to return.

We've been saying Inuit people in Canada for almost 50 years as they find the old term Eskimo derogatory. I wonder why you don't know that. They probably also appreciate 21st century conveniences just like the rest of the world. I would not want to live like my 19th century ancestors did and neither would you.
