I won't let my students reply with "I'm fine" until they've developed a good habit of answering with great, good, ok, not good, or bad. "I'm fine" becomes a crutch with which students mindlessly respond - not just children but college students as well. When this response is combined with the wrong tone as it often is in China, it sounds a bit rude or at the very least unnatural. My older students practice a variety of greeting/ conversation starters such as "how are you," "how's it going," and "how are you doing." The goal is to give them a variety of natural greetings and responses to choose from so as to break up the monotony and robotic answers.
@MooncakeEnglish
2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree! The goal is to give a variety of vocabulary and teach an understanding of the correct context to use it. The more they understand this the more natural they will sound. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

@@MooncakeEnglish yes I do enjoy working here. The place I'm working is not so big so it's kind of relaxed. They're quite much into "showing off" through videos tho and I'm not a big fan of this. But it is what it is and it's not a deal breaker 😆. China pays much much more than here but unfortunately for me it seems I can't get any job there cause I'm a NNES.
@MooncakeEnglish
4 жыл бұрын
I think there is growing pressure here for more 'showing off' as well. China does pay well, but they have gotten very strict with visa regulations so for NNES it has become much harder to find work. Try in some of the smaller cities though, I hear there are legal visas available for NNES in smaller cities because it's so much harder to find teachers there. I don't know any more details than that but it's worth looking into!

Hi Gino, thanks for watching! For China the visa requirements are that you be a holder of a passport frame native speaking country, hold a 120 hour TEFL certificate, and have two years teaching experience. For non-native speaking countries, I believe you can still get a visa if you hold a masters degree from a native speaking country. They have become very strict in China regarding teaching visa and working legally, so I only recommend teaching here if you are able to get a legal teaching work visa. I hope that helps! 😊

Hi. I'm Charlotte. I teach in Korea. I usually have 6 or 7, ten minute classes, back-to-back with no breaks in between, with preschoolers. I often have problems with kids being too noisy and talkative. How can I manage my classes AND teach my target material in such a limited time space, without totally exhausting myself? Could you make a video covering this scenario? Thsnks.
@MooncakeEnglish
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Charlotte, thanks so much for getting in touch. AGE GROUP It's a little difficult to say without knowing too many details but generally speaking with preschoolers there is a huge difference between a 2-4-year-old and a 4-6-year-old and each age group needs to be approached differently. 2-4-year-olds need a lot of songs, chants, and TPR. Everything you do should be presented with some kind of chant or song and then repeated several times over several classes. In terms of games, you should avoid team games for this age group as they just don't understand the concept of competition. You can try some activities on this playlist: kzitem.info/door/PLWnDxOCiXGirh7yuS5QZCrSUeWI9ospjF They should work for this age group and within your ten-minute window. Remember to repeat activities over several classes so they can learn how to play, leaving more time to focus on the target language. 4-6-year-olds on the other hand, love team games where they get to compete with their peers or the teacher. Again, however, because you have just ten minutes I would teach one game and then play that game repeatedly over several classes so that they understand how to play and you then have time to focus on the target language. Try games such as Switch: kzitem.info/news/bejne/loGEp2GInKmGiIY Silly Banana: kzitem.info/news/bejne/xn-t35aFnKCCeYI or Fruit Salad: kzitem.info/news/bejne/zqJ-0IOhf4uTlW0 As these games are quick, easy, and get the whole class involved. TIME Overall ten minutes is a very short English class, especially for the older students. It doesn't leave enough time for practice. So you will need to have a simple attention grabber and activity to get your target language across. Repetition is also very important and depending on how often you have class per week, you will need to repeat the exact same class for up to two weeks. This means you're not just introducing something new every class which gives students a chance to practice the material. It also means that students will learn a game and that you won't need to spend ten minutes explaining a game every class. CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT I have a video where I go through some top classroom management tips right here: kzitem.info/door/PLWnDxOCiXGiqAwjJsnX2OOIRoqEc1jxCM I hope this all helps!

Hello! this was helpful! I have a question. Do you think this would work okay in larger classes?

Hi Achieng, thanks for watching and welcome to the Mooncake community! This can work in larger classes and can be more fun because it takes longer for the dinosaur to get back home. However, if you have a really large class I would consider breaking everyone into two circles so that it is more manageable. I hope that helps!

Hi Jenna, your tips are absolutely brilliant! I really love the Tornado game but, since I have a 3 year olds class, I am afraid that won't do. Infact, it would be truly hard for them to get the explanation of the toy having to get back... so... I'm thinking of an alternative way to each how are you! I use a glove puppet who is my Italian translator when things get hard or stuck, do you have any other suggestions? Thank you so much!

Hi Maria, thanks for watching! You're right, I wouldn't use this game for three years olds as they would likely find it a little tricky to follow. You can try the game 'Bounce' and use cards to represent different responses to how are you. You can find it here kzitem.info/news/bejne/xLCP0p6IenqTmoo I hope that helps 😊

Hi Johar, thanks so much for watching and welcome to the Mooncake community! I have had a few requests in the past for demo videos. However, to legally post videos of kids I would need written permission from parents. Things also get a little tricky with KZitem if you post videos of students, so I don't have any live classes on the channel. Have you checked out Muxi's English Teaching Games? He posts some live classes on his channel, so that might be worth checking out. I hope that helps!
