Today’s Game:
In today’s video, Dustin (Canada) teaches us how to play a fun and engaging game for your ESL Students using a list of categories and your imagination!
Name of the game:
Sit Down and Shut Up!
Materials:
List of 30-50 Categories
Whiteboard/Blackboard
Ideal class size:
- 6-20 Students (adjust accordingly)
Prep time: 10-15 minutes
Instructions:
This game is to improve your student's confidence speaking and thinking on their feet. This is a category game so find as many categories that are fitting for your class' level. For a beginner level, find 20-30 categories. For beginners, maybe the know "Fruit". They know Pineapple and they know Grapes. So, as an example, Dustin puts a box on the board that says Fruit P G (P for pineapple, G for grapes). Make a map of your student's desk on the board and divide the class into two teams. All the students stand up, when one team has every member sitting down, they win.
How they'll sit down:
The teacher will call out a category "fruit, tell me a fruit". One student gives you an answer, they say "apple" so they're allowed to go sit down and shut up. By this, the teacher means, you can't yell out answers anymore. Now, the teacher is looking for that fruit that starts with a P or a G. Once those have been called out, move on to the next category, maybe a girl's name that starts with ... etc. Switch the category as needed until one team is all sitting down.
More advanced version at 3:12
Categories: something you see in the desert, something you see in the desert that starts with an S...an M... A word from last week's vocabulary. A crime that starts with ...
