To commemorate the solemnity of the Pentecosts, I leave you with another Santa Maria song dedicated to this event, about "how our Lord sent his Holy Spirit upon his disciples" (epigraph). The song can be found in the Codex de Toledo (acronym: To) - formerly in Toledo, now in Madrid - which is one of the four preserved codices of the Cantigas de Santa Maria. Within this collection, there is a sub-collection of "festive songs", which includes five songs dedicated to the "Festas de Santa Maria" (Feasts of St Mary), as well as another five songs dedicated to the "Festas de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo" (Feasts of Our Lord Jesus Christ). This particular song is the fifth of the five songs dedicated to the solemnities of Our Lord, and the last one of the all collection. Usually, the Cantigas have little to say about the 3rd Person of the Holy Trinity, except this one, which celebrates the Spirit's coming at Pentecost, and describes that Mary conceived her Son through the Holy Spirit.
Like the previous Ascension Song, the song echoes passages from the New Testament. As with the previous Ascension cantiga, this one also echoes passages from the New Testament. In particular, in the Gospel of John, where Jesus promises the Holy Spirit to his disciples, a foreshadowing of what will happen at Pentecost, in order to teach and remind them of his teachings (Jn 14:23-31). As well as in the Acts of the Apostles 2:1-11, which relates the fulfilment of this promise during the Pentecost event. In fact, in the song it is used the reaction of the perplexed crowd when they see the disciples speaking in different languages and manifesting unexpected wisdom, in order to depict the event. After the descent of the Holy Spirit, the disciples began to preach without fear, converting many people to Christ. It finally ends with a prayer to the Virgin Mary asking to receive the Holy Spirit, since Our Lord was born through her by the work and grace of the third person of the Holy Trinity.
