Essar Energy Transition (#EET) recently celebrated the government’s announcement of their support for Vertex Hydrogen’s HPP1 (hydrogen production plant 1), based at Stanlow. It was one of only two Carbon-capture-enabled Hydrogen production projects that received support in the UK. They are now in the process of negotiating a 10+ year bilateral contract with the government to secure the supply of H2.
This is a huge achievement and milestone for #EET, which cements the confidence that the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has in the project, which ultimately is the key enabler for all other decarbonisation projects on site.
We'd like to highlight the work going into how they are lowering the emissions of the production processes to become the UK’s first low-carbon refinery and share a brand-new short video.
A low-carbon refinery is not only beneficial for the environment but also ensures that Stanlow and the UK maintain a strong manufacturing base for chemicals and fuels with an ever-increasing proportion of low carbon components within them. Essar Energy Transition is committed to playing a leading role in the decarbonisation of the UK economy, with the vision aligned with the UK Government’s Ten Point Plan for the Green Industrial Revolution.
You can view the ambitious plans to create an #EnergyTransition hub here at #Stanlow by watching the short video below. It highlights how we are setting a global benchmark right here at the heart of #HyNet, the North West Carbon Capture and Storage Cluster which is one of the two UK’s leading (track 1) decarbonisation clusters.
#Essar`s EET is investing in and aiming for a low carbon future through carbon capture, energy efficiency, fuel switching and hydrogen to produce the low carbon fuels our society needs going forward.
An example of decarbonisation here at Stanlow, is the £45million furnace that was delivered to site last year. It will be the first refinery furnace in the UK capable of burning 100% hydrogen. The new furnace will reduce CO2 emissions by 16,000 tonnes per year once commissioned later this year due to its higher efficiency when compared to the existing F201 A/B/C furnaces, but more importantly, it will save 230,000 tonnes each year, once running on 100% hydrogen from HPP1 in 2026.
In the future, they will be able to apply for future revenue support from the government for other projects like the FCC Carbon Capture project, and in the meantime, they continue developing this and various other projects at pace. Essar Energy Transition has committed to invest US$2.4 billion here at Stanlow.
All this not only helps in achieving the #NetZero emissions target by 2040, but supports the local economy, provides job security, and ensures our site continues to thrive.
