I can't agree more with everything you just mentioned !! I like to focus on the web first, then simplify and remove what is not necessary for the mobile, because it's much easier as you said; Furthermore, users don't spend a lot of time on the mobile version, they keep switching between the apps they have, and they are distracted by their surrounding; while on the desktop, they are mostly focused and can accomplish more complex tasks.

This video is totally on the point! I strongly agree that you should design the web first, but when you code the design, you should start with the simpler mobile design and then add the features that are not necessary on the touch and no-hover devices 👌

"Web is not cool." Many think this way. As a web designer, it is a bummer. Still, I sometimes dream of a world with only one screen size 😅 If one does only web design as a freelancer, they are in a weird gap. Small clients expect a fully working website and more prominent clients have their own in-house designers.

Hello. Two comments: 1) Mobile users volume grows in double digits since at least 6 years. In some industries, ~70 to 80% of customers already browse sites on smartphones. Desktop is becoming slowly obsolete, especially in e-commerce where mWeb (and also mApp) revenue also grows in double digits year-on-year. Hence I disagree that "desktop first" approach is a good thing. 2) You say in 2:30 that you "remove everything that's unnecessary" in the desktop version to create the mobile version. But... why keep unnecessary things in the desktop version in the first place? Especially, when the money comes from mobile?

1. Doesn't matter - both are needed and it's always easier to substract than to add. You can disagree, I'm only speaking from my experience here, with my clients and my projects. It can be different for someone else. 1. Doesn't matter - both are needed and it's always easier to substract than to add. I find myself often preferring the mobile web version over an app. I don’t know if apps aren’t being designed well or if mobile sites are being designed better or if the interface is more flexible or some combination.
@MalewiczHype

There may be something to it - I believe people who know how to design web (which includes mobile web versions) are on average higher skilled than those who just do mobile apps. Maybe simply better designers work on web versions.

Hey - I had to raise awareness as it's been a while since they were published 🫡 The order depends on the skills. If you're just starting the first mobile apps course is a better place to start and then skip the second part and go for the web courses as they also teach high fidelity.

My design journey - short version: 1998 - learning web design on my own and doing freelance 2001 - first industry job - working as a designer/developer for a big tourism portal - back then coding the frontend WAS a part of the designers job. 2006 - first job at an agency, worked on projects for DHL, Ford, Pilsner, Triumph and Nestlé 2009 - Freelancing again + some personal time off to tour with my band 2013 - Started my own company (squareblack) and in the last 10 years worked for companies like Samsung, Oriflame, BMW, Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central, multiple banks from all over the world and more. We delivered over 500 projects for Fortune 500 companies and startups. And in 2019 I started sharing what I know on Medium.

Every video looks great until it involves the same old marketing to sell their product. Problem - Solution The more invisible the solution to be sold is more better contrast it creates. Marketing looks great until it's not perceived same by people. Keep it hidden, quite and subtle. (Now, I hope you too aren't going to like this comment. Problem - Quick Solution, poor contrast)

The difference is the video has a point that's clear and it's just a reminder that something truly useful (that has helped a lot of people) exists. Most of what I do here (and it takes literally DAYS) each week is free.
