The castle of Essertines-Basses is located not far from the village of Essertines-en-Châtelneuf, on the first foothills of the Forez mountains.
Perched from the turn of the 11th-12th centuries on a rocky spur with dizzying slopes, dominating the course of the mountain torrent Vizézy, it constituted throughout the Middle Ages a close defense of Montbrison, capital of the Counts of Forez.
On the east side, outside and leaning against the wall, was the chapel dedicated to Saint Stephen. It would date from the 12th century. It was the parish church of Essertines in the 15th century before that of Essertines-Hautes (the current town of Essertines-en-châtelneuf).
Now in ruins, this uninhabited site remains a valuable testimony to the history of the town.
While visiting Essertines Basses, we met members of the Association A.S.P.E.C., Animations Sentiers Patrimoine Essertines-en-Châtelneuf, who maintain and animate the site at the same time as they maintain the surrounding paths in order to highlight the heritage around 'Essertines-en-Châtelneuf. They were also in full "spring work" for the development of this beautiful site in the Vizézy valley.
