-With regard to copper factory, what was it that you felt your sector needed?
I have already started importing copper alloys when I first started in '89.
Because my master's thesis was on this subject, I studied these alloys for my master's degree, the copper alloys.
-So your familiarity with them goes back to your graduate studies.
Then, when I found a brochure of those materials in the company in Karaköy, which was the agency of a company that was not selling them; I came on to it and I started to sell from there, we started to import.
Then at Sağlam Metal too were importing the same alloys.
But of course, this was always on my mind, so I thought, “why am I importing a group of materials that I have been experimenting with and selling? What am I waiting for now?” What was holding me back was that I was coming from sales engineering, I was traveling all the time. I knew I couldn't manufacture in a factory, I was sure of it.
Manufacturing them meant being in charge of the factory.
So I thought, “Let me run an ad.” I figured, if I could find someone with experience, maybe I could get him to set it up.
And a 65-year-old gentleman responded to the ad and said that he would do it, that he could set it up.
He was living on Baghdad Street, I said “you cannot come, we are at İkitelli, we want to build the factory on the Gebze side.”
He said “no, I got bored at home,” he said “I will do it.” Indeed, he came to İkitelli for about 6 months; the plans, the projects, he did it all. Thanks to him, big brother Nurettin, who contributed a lot, we started manufacturing on August 30, 2005, on Victory Day, at the land we had bought in 2004.
It was a huge step for us. It was a huge step for Sağlam Metal.
We set out seeing the future, trusting in our future, trusting ourselves.
I remember that day very well. Everyone was very happy. Because production is something else. Production excites everyone, you can see it in people's eyes.
I mean, you take a piece of copper that someone threw away, and with it you replace the imported copper that was brought all the way from other corners of the world.
That's how you imagine it, picture it.
Now, if you ask me, “what gives you the most pleasure right now?”
What gives me the most pleasure is seeing the customer names on those crates, the customer names coming from different countries of the world, while touring the export area. And also seeing the order slips on the saw at the cutting site, seeing where the pieces are to be sent.
In general, I know the customers well because I visit a lot of them domestically and abroad.
- Visiting and seeing the places you touch, this excites you, as far as I can tell.
When I see the order, I think, “so they have started to work on the mold, so they will produce this piece” and so on; we can get some ideas about the process from there.
