Get out on that disco dance-floor! Here’s Esther Phillips’s 1975 disco version of Dinah Washington's classic hit: "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes. It reached #2 on the disco charts. It also reached the Top 20 in the US and the Top 10 in UK.
I fondly remember watching her perform it live on SNL during its 1st season on November 8, 1975.
I never cared for the cheap, boring mix, where everything, including the effects, was panned mono to make it sound “punchy”, save the rhythm guitar and the strings, which were the only instruments panned stereo.
To make this ULTRA-STEREO remix, I separated Esther’s vocal from the accompaniment into 2 separate tracks. On the orchestral accompaniment, I put a 20ms delay on the Right channel, expanded the dynamic range [it was very compressed for LP mastering], then re-added Esther’s isolated mono vocal [with an extra hint of stereo reverb] in final mixdown.
Enjoy my HQ ULTRA-STEREO REMIX of Esther Phillips performing her classic disco version of “What A Diff'rence A Day Makes”
