I actually met Roy Benavidez when I was a kid. My mom was involved with a Hispanic organization and Roy was the speaker. She picked him up from the airport and brought him over. Just as a point of reference about the Congressional Medal of Honor: If a US Armed Forces member sees a person wearing the Congressional Medal of Honor they are required to offer a salute, regardless of the difference in rank. This extends to the Commander-in-Chief of the US Armed Forces, also known as the President of the USA. The reason for that is because this type of heroism "above and beyond the call of duty" is what is required to earn it.
@Roelle1369

Correct. For it is that you salute the metal more so than the person as it is the highest honor we can bestow a member of the military. in any regards, to earn this, you are one serious badass!
@VTXCageSC

As Medal of Honor recipients try to remind us, just as there is no "Congressional" Silver Star, there is no "Congressional" Medal of Honor. It's the Medal of Honor, ...period. All medals of valor (even a Soldier's Medal or Bronze Star) must eventually receive approval from Congress. MOH recipients feel that the ignorance and miseducation of this fact are demeaning to their brothers, many who died with them, who received a lower ranked award of recognition than they, by adding, much less stressing, the unauthorized adjective "Congressional." Sharing such information in a gentle manner when you see/hear it and as appropriate, is much appreciated by all valor awardees.

Upon returning to the Enterprise surgeons told him they were going to amputate. He decided this was not an option grabbing the doc by the collar and telling him if he wakes up without a leg the surgeon wouldn't make it stateside, which was agreed upon by the rest of his team. Long story shortened, surgeon went home, he had his leg, and a scar wrapping his leg from his groin splitting up and encircling his knee reconnecting on the back of his calf just above his Achilles. I had the PRIVILEGE of meeting Master Sergeant Benivedez at my Army Reserve unit in Kentucky in the early 1990s. I still treasure the photos from that day. Heroes are real, just really hard to find.
