Here's a problem text from 1 Timothy 3:15, where the ESV reads: "if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth." Whereas for the same passage the RSV-CE reads: "if I am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth." Note the ESV says, "a pillar", as opposed to the more definitive "the pillar", when referring to "the church of the living God". Some Catholic commentators have observed that use of the indefinite article "a" exhibits a bias in the ESV.

This is why I gave a problem with ESV. Luke 17:37 English Standard Version 37 And they said to him, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, “Where the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.” Same verse but RSVCE "And they answered and said to Him, 'Where, Lord? So He said to them, 'Wherever the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together" Big difference

Have you studied Greek? If not, then you don't understand why it was translated that way. There was not definite article for the noun "pillar," hence, it can be correctly translated either with an indefinite article "a" or a definite article "the" in English. Either way, it does not really matter. For you to conclude that it was a bias is in itself a bias on your part for being baseless.
@Shlomayo

@@Tax_Buster And if you studied Greek, you'd know the Greek says "eagles" not "vultures". So, definitely, one cannot claim that the ESV is a better/more faithful translation.

@@charliek2557 I think you have to give up on getting a quality Catholic Bible. The Ignatius Study Bible is in the NT only and has been that way for years. When the complete Ignatius Study Bible is produced, (someitme before the end of the century) it will be too heavy to lift. The NABRE is a horrible translation with very liberal notes. The ESVCE came out awhile back, but you notice that Augustine Institute has not produced any other editions since. I suspect sales have been very poor. The NRSVce editions are often anglicized, but beyond that, not acceptable at least for me. So, again, I am of the conclusion you have to go with a Protestant Bible, especially if you're looking for a Study Bible. Good grief, look at the ESV or NIV Study Bibles. They are magnificent. And where the notes differ with Catholic teaching, well, just ignore them. There are many more notes that we agree with. It is beyond belief that the Catholic world is simply unable to produce anything of quality.

@@scottforesman7968 i would steer any Catholics clear of any Protestant study Bible as the theology is SO different I don’t know what value they would really gain. If people want a good Catholic study Bible that is all in one I would point them toward the Didache Bible which is really good. Also the Ignatius Study Bible New Testament is amazing. I believe the OT version will come out in a separate volume which is fine with me. For a study Bible I’d rather have more notes and a gigantic Bible than a small one with less that’s portable. I also don’t think the NABRE is a bad translation, although the liberal notes are atrocious and need to go. God bless

In Spanish, there are more than ten different Bible translations from the original languages, and indeed, the liturgical version is a translation made by Catholics. It is disheartening to witness the crisis in the Church in the Philippines and the U.K., where they must resort to using a Protestant Bible for liturgical purposes, signaling a significant decline in those countries.

For gerneral reading and meditation I use the DRB , and if I struggle with some text in the DRB, I grab the ESVCE to get a more modern easier translation without any annoying gender neutral dialogue .... although this is not a strict ragime , it's basically an outline how I delve into the word of God.

@awe yea 1 Timothy 3:15 per the ESV is rendered: "... the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth." All of the better translations - Douay-Rheims, KJV, RSV(CE), NASB, NKJV - use the definite article "the" before the word "pillar". The ESV, by its use of the indefinite article "a", suggests the Church is only one "pillar and buttress of the truth". That's what's wrong with it.
