Ethiopian President, Mrs. Sahle Work Zewde presented athlete Tamrat Tola, the brave athlete who won the only gold medal for Ethiopia in the men's marathon at the Paris Olympics, with 7 million birr and a gold medal.
A prize of 4 million birr was also given to athletes who brought medals to their country.
But, the coach of those athletes, refused to accept the reward of two million birr.
These were what the coach had say during an interview he gave about his apology and opinions?
"It's not about money”.
What we are saying now is that the value given to us, the moral, is greater than the money.
I was a teacher; I have served as a teacher for 9 years and I hate that no one gives a place to the profession.
Respect for the profession is dead in our country.
It's not about money. I work with companies, I work as a manager of athletes, money is not my problem. I know poverty and I live in poverty.
When I got to the airport in the morning, I felt so bad. Everyone there was calling only the peoples who brought medals.
This gives less respect to the coach than it deserves. Athletes are also forgotten.
Yes! It shouldn't have been there. But sometimes you do it unconsciously. You can hit someone; you can go crazy.
But that is a palace, and I apologize to all the people of Ethiopia for making the people angry. I apologized to our president when he was about to leave there, and I apologize again and again.
I also apologize to my friends in the profession.
People make mistakes.
But, I still don't accept the money; I will accept if you fix it.
