Hello neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer, and today we're taking a look at installing the Draw-Tite Class 5 Ultra Frame Trailer Hitch on a 2023 Ford F-150. Now, if you don't have a hitch on your F-150 or you want to get a little bit more capacity out of the existing hitch you have, installing this is gonna do it. This is a class five, meaning it's super heavy duty. Now, being a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening means that you're gonna have tons of options when it comes to bike racks, cargo carriers, or in this case, a ball mount, because this is really a heavy duty towing hitch. You can load up all your accessories all the same with a 5/8 pin clip, which is not included with the hitch, but a lot of times your accessories will come with one, and so this is gonna keep all of those in place. Now if you plan on having accessories loaded up and keeping them on the back of your truck, you might wanna look at a locking pin and clip.
That way you can leave your accessories on and know that no one's gonna walk away with them. Safety chain moves are pretty heavy duty compared to a lot of your other hitches. Now, a standard S-hook is gonna be a little bit tricky. It kind of sits at an angle here, so you might wanna do a quick link on here to make it a little bit easier. A larger cleva style, we can get this on here.
Again, it does kind of sit at a weird angle, but once you kind of get here, it's gonna work just fine. And those safety chain loops are definitely larger than most hitches and that's for a reason. That's because this heavy duty hitch has some serious capacity. A gross trailer weight rating of this is gonna be 11,000 pounds. Your tongue weight rating, which is gonna be the downward pressure that's put on the inside of the receiver tube opening, so your suspended accessories, is 1100 pounds.
So I really don't ever think that you're gonna overload that with a bike rack or cargo carrier. And this can be used with a weight distribution hitch, which is only gonna give you more. That gross trailer weight rating is gonna be 14,000 pounds, and your tongue weight rating is gonna be 1400 pounds. Now keep in mind, just because the hitch is rated at that doesn't mean that the vehicle is, so check the vehicle's owner's manual before you go and hook up to start towing. But if you're looking to tow some pretty heavy loads with your F-150, this is definitely the hitch I'd be looking at.
The hitch does sit a little bit recessed from the bumper. So from the center of the hitch pin hole to the furthest point of the bumper, we're coming in right about 4-1/2 inches, so that's gonna be important when choosing any of your accessories. You wanna make sure that they're gonna be able to stow or if you're picking up a ball mount, you wanna make sure that it sticks out far enough to be able to hook up to your trailer without having any issues of hitting your bumper. Now as far as your ground clearance goes, this one comes in at 18 inches and that's gonna be really important when choosing that ball mount. You can measure the coupler of your trailer and then compare that with the 18 inches and determine the rise or drop necessary. Not only are you gonna get higher capacities than most of the hitches out there, but also, this one allows you to keep your full-size spare on the truck where some of your other hitches that you put in place, you can't retain that full-size spare. So it's really nice you get all of the big beefy hitch to do all your towing, but also you'll have that spare just in case an emergency happens. Now as far as installation goes, this one isn't too terribly bad. You do have to move some wiring that's mounted up on the frame as well as the ground wire. But once those are outta the way, you just fish wire in some hardware, raise it up, torque it all down, and then you're ready to go. So speaking of that installation, let's take a look at that now, that way you can get your hitch installed. The first thing we're gonna want to do to get our hitch installed is lower down our spare tire. It's gonna give us a lot more room to work and also to get our hitch up. Now we're obviously on a lift, but you can definitely do this at home in your driveway or garage. So we will get this lowered down and moved outta the way. Now on our passenger side, we'll find that we have a ground wire attached to the frame, so I'll use a 10 millimeter socket to remove our bolt. (power tool whirring) And then as we follow up our ground, we'll see that there's a plastic push pin that goes up in the fram
