Hi everyone. Aiden here with etrailer. And today we're gonna be taking a look at the Yakima Long Haul hanging style bike rack and we're gonna see how it fits on the back of our 2017 Winnebago View Motor Home. So the Long Haul is gonna be an excellent option for your motor home. And probably notice in the beginning I said it's a hanging style bike rack. What that means is the bike is going to hang by the frame here.
That's gonna be a more entry level option for bike racks because they tend to be at a bit more of an accessible price point. Although there are some considerations to think about, like the bike compatibility. If you have a kid's bike or an alternative frame bike, you're probably gonna need to pick up a bike adapter bar. It's essentially a piece that'll just go between the seat posts and the handlebars and give you this nice flat attachment point that we're using on our road bike right now. And the other thing is because we're making frame contact, I wouldn't advise carbon frame bikes on here, just because you wanna protect that frame and hanging by it is not gonna be great.
And as far as weight capacity goes, this can support up to 37.5 pounds per bike and can hold up to four bikes, making this a really good option for, say, a family of four, getting just some basic bikes to your destination at the campsite. And it is important to note that this is a motor home approved rack and that's why I think this is such a good fit for the View, because motor home bike racks have to be built to a different standard, built to just withstand a bit of extra shock and vibration you'll experience at the hitch compared to a typical passenger vehicle. So motor home approved four bike racks are a bit rarer. So if you're looking for that and you need that kind of capacity, this is one of your only options. One thing to know with the bike's still loaded is that you do get an integrated cable lock.
So when your bikes are up here and you, say, maybe leave them at the campsite or you're just driving around and make a stop at a gas station, you can feed this through all the frames and lock it to an integrated point at the end of the arms right next to Yakima's bottle opener. But when you are ready to remove the bikes, there's three straps, Yakima calls these zip strips, that hold it in place. You'll just pinch the two release tabs on each side and pull that zip strip out. They do fully remove, so try to keep track of 'em 'cause they do get lost pretty easily. And something to think about is that this rack is gonna sit really tall in the hitch, so you'll have to lift the bike a fair bit, but also those arms are gonna be probably right about face level, not the most comfortable, but with bikes under 37.5 pounds, I think you'll be okay.
Just something to think about. Now, a few compatibility things to think about with your motor home is this back compartment. Because the bike rack's in the hitch, it's going to block that door partially, but we get pretty decent access through here, just not fully open, so you might not be able to fit certain things in or out. What I think is a bit more important, though, is your rear slide, because once you park your motor home, you're gonna want to open it up and this rack is completely fixed. There's no tilt away function on it. So if you want that slide to clear, you're gonna have to take the bike rack out of the hitch, which for me is a bit unfortunate. Again, this is one of the few four bike racks that works with your motor home, so you might consider this as an option, but if this bothers you and it's not something you want to deal with, taking out of the hitch every time you park your motor home, then I'd recommend the Hollywood Rack's Destination four bike rack. It's a platform style rack and it's going to have much better clearances, not affect the slide at all, but it'll have a slightly lower weight capacity. Maybe something that's a concern, but I think more than anything it's gonna work better with the motor home and it will work better with kids' bikes and alternative frame bikes. So you get some wins there too. If you decide, though, that this is the right one for you, you don't mind taking it out of the hitch, you'll probably want to know how i
