Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today, on 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, we're gonna be showing you how to install the etrailer universal brake controller install kit. But before we get into that, why don't we just check this out and make sure it's gonna be something that you're gonna need. First and foremost, the most popular reason this kit is used is to allow you to hook up a brake controller if you don't have that factory tow package. And in many cases, the majority of the Jeeps that I've seen or worked on don't have that. So, this will probably be applicable to the most of you, Jeep owners out there.
So, it's gonna have a seven-way, round-type connector. And what that's gonna allow you to do is plug your trailer into there and get all of the necessary signals and outputs. So, you'll have your brake lights, your running lights, your turn signals, auxiliary power, which is a 12-volt power source, that if your trailer has a battery or something on it and you have it hooked up right, it could potentially charge that battery. And then you'll have your electric brake output. So, whenever you plug your trailer in, that has trailer brakes and you hit your brake controller, it'll send that power out through here, into the trailer and apply the brakes.
And I do like the setup too, 'cause it also has a four-way that kinda comes off to the side here, so you get both of the type of common trailer connectors. If you got, or maybe you pull a camper or something with trailer brakes, and then sometimes you pull utility trailer or some jet skis or something around that don't have this type of connector, you have your four-way there as well, so you don't have to bother with an adapter or anything like that. In order for this to work, you are gonna need existing four-way flat wiring because this is gonna plug into that. And then it comes with some extra wires and stuff that you'll run up to the front, to your brake controller, into your battery to get the other inputs and outputs sent back here. If you don't have existing four-way flat wiring, we do carry it here at etrailer.
I used a Tekonsha wiring kit on ours today and everything worked just fine. The Curt kit will work as well. But this is just one of those things that is often overlooked and kinda forgotten about, but it's a critical part to being able to actually hook up that brake controller. So, if that's what you're trying to set up on your Jeep and you don't have that factory tow package already, then you'll need this, your four way flat wiring, a brake controller. And with these Jeeps, since brake controllers require a brake signal, so when you push down on your brake pedal inside, it requires that signal to be sent up to them, the Jeep's factory one doesn't work out.
You'll have to use an additional one, which is the Roadmaster stoplight switch kit. So, those are all the parts you're gonna need. And to get this installed, it's not really complicated per se. It's just time consuming. Running wires and going in and out and everything else, so be prepared to spend a little bit of time doing this. But with that said, why don't we go ahead and get started on it now. To you begin our installation, we're gonna be here at the back of our Jeep, and the first thing we need to do is get our seven-way connector plug hooked up. So, you'll take the included bracket, and I just use a self-tapping screw to secure it to the bottom of our bumper beam. I just ran it right up in there. A pretty good spot for it. If you wanna put it somewhere else, it's entirely up to you. But with that done, we'll take all of our wires and push them through. Get that in there. Then you'll take a screw. Come back, if I can manage to grab the hardware here. Take a flat washer, a split lock washer and a hex nut. And I'm gonna get all four of these started and then we can come back and snug them down. And then we're gonna have a four-way flat coming off on one end, I'm gonna cut that cap off. And this is gonna get plugged into our existing four-way flat wiring on our Jeep today. But what I'm gonna do is take some dielectric grease and just put some on the terminals. This will help protect it against corrosion and things like that. And this will just plug right in. Now, we can start to hook up some of our wires. So, you
