When I got into the Megten series or rather Atlus it was very clear to me what games I wanted to play and simply did not. The more and more games I've played, I realized the games on the list that I did not want to play made it over the games I wanted play list. For example initially I did not want to play Devil Survivor but I got Devil Survivor Overclocked. I say all this to say, Etrian Odyessey was (and may still be) on that list of Atlus games I did (do) not want play. I'm conflicted like the collection was $20-$30 then I would be fine on spending that money on a game that may or may not interested in playing. However $80 is insane. Take the Yakuza series (another Sega title for those who don't know) for example, there's collection for remasters of Yakuza 3-5 that you can get for at most $30 but it frequently goes on sale. I realize it's bit unfair to compare a 2D dungeon crawler turn-base JRPG to a fully 3D beat em up with big 3D environments but Yakuza also has more content. According to HowLongToBeat, you can get 56 more hours of the Yakuza Remastered Collection than you could get from the Etrian Odyessey Origins Collection. I realize that getting them on DS cost hundreds so $80 in that regard looks like a steal but considering that emulation exists, you can get the games for free minus the QoL features and DLC. Maybe one day if did some kind of 50% off sale, I'll consider until then I think I'm good. I was essentially hype but now I think I'm good.

With the ‘Made the monster compendium more accessible’ line, I hope they mean they added more details… I remember some side quests would say “Go defeat X Acorn Lobbers (or something idk)” but the catch is: you can’t remember where those are, and all the compendium gave you was some flavor text and some common drops from the monster. Hoping they add stuff like what floor they’re on and the like.

"Easy access to the compendium, quest log, and skill tree." Because in the original DS trilogy, none of those three things existed AT ALL. If you took a quest at the tavern, you'd get the basic idea of what to do and where to go... but that was it. There was no way to "review" a quest short of abandoning it, taking it again, and having the same exact dialogue repeated at you. No way to double-check any quest info while actually in the Labyrinth. Sometimes very hard to tell that you'd completed a quest short of going back to town, hitting up the tavern, and crossing your fingers that the "quest complete" icon would appear. As for the monster compendium, they added a bare-bones one for EO 4 on the 3DS, but for the original games I think they expected you to write monster weaknesses down as you found them out, but given how key knowing that stuff is to basic gameplay, the compendium got more and more comprehensive over time, to the point that by the time the later 3DS games rolled around, the compendium would show you "strong to/weak against/immune to" info on ALL physical attack types, ALL elemental damage, and ALL status ailments. So, having all this info for the original trilogy will make those game much less tedious - you don't have to wiki-dive monster and boss weaknesses anymore, or waste a bunch of time and TP trial-and-erroring every ailment and element on every single monster type. Same with Skill Trees. In the original versions, you just had a massive vertical list of all the skills a class could potentially learn, and the only way to know what basic skills unlocked the more advanced skills was to select the greyed-out advanced skill, press A, and read what the prerequisite skills were in a little text box that would pop up. It was cumbersome, time-wasting, and again, impossible to remember unless you wanted to write a whole bunch of stuff down. Now, these three games will have proper skill trees with lines that connect the basic skills to the more advanced ones, so you can see at a glance what builds are possible, and roughly how many skill points/levels it's going to take you to get there. Again, a super helpful quality-of-life feature.

@alejandrosunshadow6041 as mentioned above, even Japanese fans disliked the untold versions due to the drastic alterations. Which is some of the many risks of remakes/re-imagine versions of games; adding and altering the story/settings to suit the new audience, but changing to the point it's way different from the core story. Also current remakes are more expensive and time-consuming to produce than in the pasts, with questionable alterations from the original stories.

In the newer EO games you can just hit a button during combat to bring up the monster compendium with the enemy's weaknesses and resistances but there was no such feature in the original DS games. These games also had no visual skill "tree" but only a list so there was no easy way to tell which skills needed which prerequisites until you tried to learn a skill. The remasters will probably have these features. Not sure what's that about a quest log, even the very first Etrian Odyssey had one of these. At the same time, the price is partly warranted, as its moving /calibrating the game code, meant for 2 screens to 1 single screen, and past DLC in the package. I think a collection can be greater than a standard game price IF the remaster's are a serious overhaul (one that might imply that the game is worth near it's original launch price) and the titles aren't that far back in terms of release date, platform, chronology, etc. Its just weird in this case, because these games are 15-10 years old. in general I don't understand why something being put in a boxed package would necessitate some agreed upon max value, though I've never liked 60 norm, not just because some games didn't feel worth it on their own, but because some games probably could have been more, and this target price only served to make hard decisions to make games fit a certain budget, or try to hit outside their demographics, and eventually make DLC normalized so you're paying more eventually anyway, and for stuff that's not on the disc. So my issues are multi-fold, for one, already with the DLC. These are promising not just updates, but new features, and yet some of those features are DLC... that like tying fast travel to an exclusive amiibo for your 60 dollar port of a wii game. Second is I'm still not sure what all is going to be included or at least have parity with Untold, if they are supposedly ADDING content, but that content doesn't equal and exceed Untold's additions, then its another FES versus P3P situation where theres still no definitive version (granted I'm not even sure what all Untold added/changed). Its just weird considering that you can get the 3 uncharted games or 4 Kingdom Hearts games for under 50 and Atlus is asking 80, but those are more popular games, not only has the market been tapped, they aren't at all rare, and they've been ported a ton, and they're pretty standard ports. If the Remaster job is great, and the 'new content' is actually inclusive and expansive, then yes, I can see these being worth like 30 bucks individually, but I know Atlus's track record with both remasters AND content expansions so I will hold out and wait for some super fan to nitpick the differences for me and explain how this collection doesn't actually save Untold from Eshop purgatory.

Nintendo has talked about raising the prices of their new releases games from the $60 to $70 and they already did it for Legend of Zelda:Tears of the Kingdom. Still I am glad that these games have gotten a port since the Nintendo 3ds Eshop will be closing next month and if there are any games that you haven't gotten yet you should pick them up now along with any dlc and game updates. I guess this will make the Etrian Odyssey Untold 1&2 rare now you can still get them on the eshop and it comes with two games for the price of one and both of them are $19.99. Also don't forget to get EO 4,5 and Nexus since I don't know if these games will also get a port if you want to play them later.

I think if the remastered game looks good, like something that could've released recently, then a price of $40-60 USD like most other Switch games is fair. Besides, porting a DS game to PC/Switch is a lot of work and they need to cover those expenses and still make enough profit that's it's worth the time/money investment and opportunity cost. What it comes down to is that, if we want to keep getting remasters, we need to keep paying those $40-60 prices for it to make sense for them business-wise.

I find it crazy when people refrence the ebay prices of the DS games when they aren't really equivalent since we aren't even getting a physical copy of the collection in the first place outside of Japan, so an old physical copy isn't comparable in any way. If you just wanted to play on the hardware though, you can get away with buying a decent cheap reproduction cart and be fine. Since its digital only for the collection, the best comparison would be emulation. Its quite easy to find the Roms for these old DS games online, whether you don't like DS piracy or find it morally wrong isn't really relevant either. Its the ease at which it can be done for no cost to the people doing it. Why pay an exorbitant price of $80 USD for 3 old DS games digitally with minor QoL improvements and some added PNGs when you could just pirate the originals for free and emulate them at no cost to you? Especially for the PC version of the collection, since you're not only getting shafted with the price, but you have to forcibly put up with Denuvo DRM for games that people have been pirating for years and will continue to do so? Denuvo in this case only effects the paying customer. The entire collection should be $60 with each game being sold separately for $20-25 digitally, not $80 and $40 being sold separately. In comparison to the EO collection, take a look at Capcom's upcoming Battle Network collection. All 6 BN games for $60 with online versus functionality, PLUS the different versions of each BN game that has one. An authentic copy of a single version of BN6 alone goes for $60 LOOSE and for over $100 for a CIB copy, yet Capcom put the pricetag of the WHOLE COLLECTION for $60, with the option of paying $20 less ($40 for one volume) if you really only wanted 3 of the games in particular. The EO collection would've been an instant purchase for me if the pricetag was actually reasonable, but its just not.

The physical release is also only $60 compared to the digital $80. I personally feel $60 is fine for 3 remastered games especially since it's not even the remake versions that are on the 3ds - $80 is outrageous. Even the dlc prices are pretty expensive for 3 bucks for two character skins? I love Etrian Odyssey but the pricing is too expensive - the dlc and the game itself.

People are very hung up about the price of the HD collection, but I see it in a different light. The games are definitely long enough to warrant their price. You are going to get your money's worth in gameplay hours, even if you get them separately. Furthermore, the original games are very expensive to get nowadays due to how rare some are. Especially Etrian Odyssey 3 is incredibly hard to find, easily costing over 200 dollars just to get it as a used copy. Plus, these games are not playable on the Switch and bringing them to the Switch *and Steam* will open it up to a whole new audience. Lastly, they could've just done a straight HD update, but they have added stuff beyond what the games used to hold. For example the extra portraits for every class. So all this makes me say that 40 bucks for what is essentially a full game is still a good price.

Another point is a calibration of the games' coding and style. They are moving from 2 screens functionalities to 1 screen, causing a lot of alterations/reprogramming. Plus potentially adding previous paid DLC in the package, plus multiple text languages and dual audio like P5R remaster. At the same time, there's a chance of seasonal sales to get the combo at a cheaper price.
@DBinitiate
Жыл бұрын
@@vanessachowjiaying4423 Oh, yeah. There's no denying there'll be sales, especially since it'll be on Steam too. People who aren't certain about their interest in the games might not get them even if they are on sale, but sales help with those that're on the fence. There is just a certain level of disrespect by openly saying that the pricing is too much, despite actually being interested in them, without pointing out flaws in the game.
@vanessachowjiaying4423
Жыл бұрын
@@DBinitiate Agree on the disrespect. Also niche games tends to go digital due to the costs and uncertainty of success from the developers and publishers perspective. Sometimes older games have to go through preservations and re-programming to ensure playability in new consoles. In some cases, codes of older games have to be placed into newer engines, like with SMT3 Nocturne. However, seeing Etrian Oddessy remaster kind of gives some hope of Persona Q/Q2 being ported. Though hoping for them to fix the name input of the protagonists, taking into account they have canon names due to the re-releases. However, Atlus might be focusing on more P5 games to close the stories proper before moving to the next mainlines.

Buried the franchise's future. Getting these old handheld titles out to a wider audience could've massively grown it's popularity. You can build a quality Steam library for 80$ during their seasonal sales. The newest massive titles WITH the DLC or season pass cost 80$. It is very easy to emulate DS titles. Frankly, outside of the most flush with money hardcore Atlus fans (of which there aren't many), there is no audience for this release. Hmm that's debatable. I would argue EO III is equal to Labyrinth of Refrain. The main selling point of EO series is the sense of grand adventure, while Labyrinth of Refrain sells mystery. There is a side activity which contains minigame in EO3, improving the grandeur sense of the game. The dungeon design differ quite a lot, EO3 style signify nature beauty, with a sprinkle of high fantasy. Labyrinth of Refrain signify dread on early levels, and enchanted horror feeling on later levels. Both games are good at their own rights.

Labyrinth of Refrain was a game I enjoyed the concept of but it's lack of difficulty in combat made it a lot less enjoyable than etrian odyssey to me, I find most of the "Difficulty" came from the fact I seemed to complete an objective but it didn't count as completed so I wandered for like 5 hours before realizing the game has a hidden prerequisite of getting an albeit fairly common item to progress but since the item drops exclusively from pickups that only respawn after exiting the dungeon and returning and the combat wasn't too difficult I stayed in the dungeon for so long for no reason One element I really did enjoy was the ability to store EXP for later, basically choosing not to claim EXP now in order to get an EXP multiplier for each progressive battle you survive without claiming, then you can claim at anytime out of battle or if you wait till you leave the dungeon you get ANOTHER EXP multiplier, it's really a cool concept I think would honestly be cool in Etrian Odyssey maybe as a skill in a specific class as an alternative to other class skills to ease grinding like the ones to make gold enemies more common or to immediately enter random battles

Sure most Etrian Odessy fans and Atlus fans will be willing to bite the bullet (which atlus is clearly trying to exploit) but trying to get anyone else outside these circles to buy the game will be a tough sell. Especially when you consider that this series is pretty niche and will hurt the sales in the long run once the hardcore fans have bought it.

And dont forget that these are DS games for 40$ a pop. Not even the 3ds versions, the original DS ones (and that's not even considering how bad the P3P and SMT3 remasters were) Even with the cheaper price of 80$ that's more expensive then Final fantasy 16, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and pretty much any AAA game out there. (And hell, FF-pixel remaster is 75$ for 6 games and MegaMan battle network is 60$ for 6 games) I love atlus as much as everyone here, but being a fan means caring for the series, including not supporting crappy practices like this.
