You can reform before the europeans arrive by force-religion yourself to animist. All you need to do is to force vassalize tlaxcalla, while not taking too much land to prevent force religioning yourself. When you become animist you get full income from gold so you can hire insane advisors and have a massive military. Once you have embraced renaissance, you can take cholula from tlaxcalla and you should get the "return to your roots" event, which turns you back into nahuatl. Proceed as normal and then release one of the animist minors who will spawn with renaissance and as a duchy (non-primitive government) and you can fully reform before 1500. I think I fully reformed by 1490. The best part about this is you can start expanding pretty much immediately towards colonial regions and even get to "drive" the europeans out of mexico.

@@graemevanderjagt17 I wasn't clear with that. You declare war on an animist country to force religion yourself. You however can't do it if your nation is too big, hence only vassalizing tlaxcalla instead of taking a bit of land like you'd normally do.

I've let my pride get ahead of me several times as the Aztecs, never conceding any defeat to the Europeans, not even something as simple as giving them money - when I clearly have no economic issues and the net loss would be minimal. I've always fought them. And even though I have defeated the Europeans prior to reformation on some occasions, I can confirm it's just not worth it. You'll need your full army, you'll have to merc up, and by the time you've somehow successfully defeated the Europeans, you'll either settle for white peace or 150 ducats monetary gain at best. So what did you gain otherwise? Nothing. No provinces, basically no money, you've likely lost all your manpower, you're gonna lose lots of money rebuilding and so on. It's better to do as Res says and just take that temporary monetary hit. You won't feel it. Unless you're like me and have a fragile pride.

"Early in game they will just want your money..." Spain declares war in 1542. Accepts nothing less than 12 provinces from the core of my nation. Although no negative events occured to me, then I reformed and took it all back once they had cored and colonised it. Then proceeded to stomp every colony around, then no CB'd Morroco to get a base in Europe to start attacking Spain (pure revenge). Venice turns out to be an absolute beast, has all of north Italy, half the adriatic coast, 3 vassals, 8 member trade union and is getting coalitioned by France, spain, another 10 small nations and is then attacked by Ottomans. But they allied me, lost that war but only lost their vassals (ottomans ate them) and were in huge debt. Then I could pay them out of it, have a powerful ally and then take parts of Spanish coast, we shared Naples and just cleaned up Austria and nothing can complete with our combined Navies in the Med. Used this vid as a guide and it worked like a charm. A solid 5/7

Spain wound up attacking me around 1570 before I was reformed and I got hit by the collapse of society event so my armies were useless. They wanted 12 of my provinces even with 700 gold offered, so I just drug the war out until they finally landed a 20k stack I had no hope of defeating. Had to give up like 8 provinces and a few loans worth of gold, but as soon as they cored the provinces I could reform, lost the collapse of society modifier, and the provinces went to the newly formed colonial nation of New Spain. Sieged them down in a few months and I was in a great position. Moral of the story- don't be afraid to give up a bunch of land to a colonizer pre-reform, with colonial nation mechanics you can take them right back with little issue afterwards. Video said they only ask for gold early game, but Spain's permaclaims on half your land means that isnt really true.

You can annex/release nearby animist native council into monarchy, and dev push it to feudalism. You can reform off them before 1500. This is actually worthwhile, since you're not buying as many techs at a premium initially. In tests I find that unless you're reforming off Europeans significantly before 1550, you come out ahead just developing feudalism in animist/totemist turned monarchy subject and reforming. Don't annex feudalism subject right away, while you're dev pushing for renaissance and colonialism it'll tech and give you some neighbor bonuses.

I won my war against GB as the Inca before I could reform, since they ship small stacks (as in only 20) and with all i'd got 80 (i did dev a bit....) stack mil tech 5 against 8 i somehow managed to win the first stackwipe after that happened about 4 times and i got some gold and war rep out if it. Lost all my manpower and had some loans after that but I had nothing to fight anyway so mp was free, and the cash it cost me was well payed for by the British.

Wait a second - the doom mechanic. I thought it will top after passing all 5 reforms, but it doesn't - so when I'm eating my neighbours I'll get +1 doom per province per year, and without the neighbours there aren't wars / battles to get it down - so how do I not commit suicide while blobbing?

AlexWehpunkt every reform reduces doom gain by 20%. Once you get the 5th reform you don’t gain doom anymore

@@archdukefranzferdinand567 it says "-1 doom per year per reform" and "+1 doom per province per year" - so yeah, if you stay with your five starting provinces, that means +5 -5 = 0. But when I start to blob or annex my vassals I'll have somewhat like for example 10 provinces (+10) minus still 5. Nowhere I have found something about percentage?
