I started learning to DJ and make beats in the late 90's. That's what initially led me to music of this era. This record in particular was an enigmatic holy grail of sorts. The red cover with the painting is perfectly bizarre and draws you in. The music is love or hate type thing and was described as a "drunk lounge singer". 😅 I get it, but I grew to love it. Even my friends who hate it, can share a laugh about how weird it sounds. I have 2 OG promo pressings in decent shape and one day I'd like get a pristine copy of this masterpiece.

Actually Gary King plays most of the bass on here. Vitous only does a few acoustic bass bits. The wild bass on here is definitely King. That same punchy electric sound that brought Power of Soul and Mister Magic to a whole different level.

If you're a record collector and you have lots of similar stuff from the late 60s/late 70s, it doesn't really sound so weird. It actually fits into a continuum of soul-to-psych stuff that was happening at the period.

An original vinyl of “Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse” is hard to find and expensive however you can still hear the same sound quality in the 50th Anniversary reissue from Real Gone Music, which came out 2 years ago. It also includes Eugene’s handwritten and unreleased “Liner notes” along with other special content. I’m his widow and I curated this reissue-sound quality was paramount to me, otherwise what’s the point? What I didn’t know previous to this project is that not all vinyl reissue companies care about sound quality, Real Gone stepped up and you can hear the difference. The sound quality on all other vinyl reissues of this record is not good at all, don’t waste your money, better to just stream it if you can’t find an original or the 50th Anniversary Real Gone reissue.

Hey Lovell, if you see any of the 3 they are worth grabbing. Unfortunately Headless Heroes will probably be big bucks, but the other two should be kinda cheap.

Excellent. Listened to this a few times at work today. Recorded the GET IT TOGETHER sample for a friend. I've got doubles of a reissue. Essential album. Hope you and your family are well. Cheers!

Yes! Good to see you Andrew - excellent choice of album - I find it quite an unsettling listen still - kind of disturbing (in a good way) - definitely not a soul record in any conventional sense - but very soulful! Look forward to seeing more of these reviews - and welcome back! I keep discovering Gene McDaniels name as a composer on tunes where I least expect to find him - I can Deliver on the Grady Tate's album After the Long Drive Home or Hummin' on Roy Ayers Ubiquity album - a real talent. Loved “Cherrystones.” And of course, “Compared to what.” Love the activism on this LP. Yeah, freak out is appropriate but I don’t listen often. Props tho.

Great record. I always liked the fact that the album was censored by the White House no less.
