After seeing this video I fell in love with vintage 8mm cameras, I’m obsessed with them and the amount of thought and attention to detail these cameras were made with. I don’t have a clue about photography or video recording but these are works of art.

Well, this camera is not a Super8-camera, as said in the video. This is the earlier format - the Standard 8 or also called Double 8.There is a difference. Both films are 8 mm wide, but the Super8 has bigger picture area, and smaller feedingholes. The Double 8 film was 16 mm, on a reel, which you had to turn over after half time. Then at processing, the film was developed and split into two 8mm strips and spliced.. The Super8 was in a casette in 8mm width, and in its full lenth.

Very true, he could start shooting standard 8 film at a reasonable price. Fomapan R100 costs £15.00 from analogue wonderland. standard 8 seems ot be more affordable than super 8. High-speed negative standard 8 film can cost over £50.00 though.

One of my film production professors was one of the world's first field video camera operators back in the 60s. The cams had zoom lenses stock but the producer made them turn in the zoom lenses for three lens turrets because he was tired of lazy cam opps just zooming in and out while gathering footage instead of taking the time to get composed establishing, medium, and closeup coverage. Every time I see one of these beautiful turret lenses it reminds me of that story. Good lesson for anyone getting into media production today!

Fifteen years ago I was visiting an inlaw relative who's husband had recently past away. I told her that I enjoyed photography and she invited me to come see something. I followed her to a building out behind her house, inside this environmentally controlled windowless bunker of sorts was an amazing sight; one of every camera model ever made. I was speechless, her husband had been collecting them all his life, and this was a shrine to the art and science of photography. I am just guessing, but the value in that room probably exceeded that of some small countries. Anyway I was allowed to inspect things for a couple of hours, and even offered a huge airborne camera from World War 2. Color me stupid but I declined the gift telling her that since I was on vacation my wife and I did not have room for it in the car, but really I think I did not want to be the first to break up her deceased husband's collection. Anyway, I wish you could have seen the collection, I know you would have appreciated the experience.

@Atka59

Techmoan Yes, the widow was preparing to start selling it off, and they can always fetch more individually then as a group. Knowing that made me sad, because there was a spirit in that room, of a man who fussed with, cleaned, and repaired those gems; something imparted to them that made them part of a group. Indeed, it was a spiritual essence, or maybe just a mental construct in my mind, yet palpable just the same. It seems that the world is effected by our passing, and I was privileged to witness the monument this man built before the winds of change diffused it. Have a beautiful Christmas and thank you for what you do on youtube.

For the States, I was thinking the Library of Congress or Smithsonian could collect and digitize photos of people with no heirs or obtained through family donations - instead of throwing them away. Aside from being able to perhaps find someone we may have been related to, the photos tend to include objects, places, and events that could help visualize the past better.

Probably someone has already mentioned this, but that iris thing at the bottom is probably part of a exposure meter . I caught sight of a DIN film speed rating dial on the side,. I'm guesstg how it works is that the light is measured by a separate lens, and a separate f-stop iris. That iris is no doubt connected to the real f-stop iris positioned in the taking lens, and when you move that f-stop lever, or dial and look through the viewfinder, there is most likely two needles or something similar that you have to match up to set the proper lens opening. Somewhere there might be a battery holder for the meter, but on a camera that old, it may use a photocell that does't need power. (Sadly, these older cells will wear out over time, although it's not certain - quite a few old meters from the fifties and ever earlier still work fine. There are sources for Regular 8mm online - buy a roll and try it out. I am not very enthusiastic about the scheme of "one taking lens and two auxiliary lens for wide angle and telephoto" because my impression is that auxilary lens are lacking compared to actual seperate lenses, but you should still get decent results.

It was often taken to 100 +. They had a tendency to flood, and ruin, over lube of the doors "O" ring would cause this. One other prob was the film , 160 Kodak Gtype was best, this was not easy to get hold of. You may not be interested, however, I thought this may be of some interest or others..

This camera pre-dated "Super 8". It would be informally called "regular 8" after the introduction of the new format required a way to distinguish them. As with magnetic tapes of the day, after you exposed the 16mm film in one direction, you had to flip the spools over and expose the other half of the film. Each direction was 90 seconds. In processing, the 16mm film was slit and spliced together to make a 3-minute 8mm film. Considering the cost of film and processing, the short length of play, and the lack of sound, it is no surprise how quickly camcorders overtook home movie cameras in the late seventies and early eighties. The Super 8 format was an improvement in that 8mm film was in a cartridge, was easier to load, and didn't have to be flipped half-way through. But I think it was still only three minutes long.

Just saw this video. First, you can get all types of film for this camera (which can include processing and high-resolution video scans) from filmphotographyproject dot com Types include color positive, black and white positive and negative, and even high-speed (ISO 500) color negative. Second, if you'd like it for experimenting/testing I have the matching cine projector, which includes a built-in synchronizer for 1/4" magnetic tape, thus offering the option of sound movies. Synchronization devices such as these were offered by a few manufacturers, such outside the projector with a connection (such as the Bolex Synchromat) and others such as this Eumig.
