for some people concerned, heres why it got 0 stars. this car was considered one of the safest cars back when it came out (and around 2011 which my mom owned) however, the reason it got such a bad rating is because theres no safety tech that has come out recently on this car by all means, this is a safe car. and i can see there are moments that are painfully concerning. however, you can safely use it without any worries. if youre really concerned i suggest taking a look at the cross model.

Let me give you a recent example. I was on a crash of a Renault Laguna from 2004, where a guy crashed into a concrete pillar under a bridge at over 80 km/h, he walked away from it with a broken thumb on his left hand from holding a steering wheel too tightly and felt a lot of pain in the chest area (turned out to be nothing, just the seat belt doing it's thing). The body of the car was very well preserved, doors opened without much use of force, damage in the cabin was minimal with the exception of pedals offsetting a bit and a steering wheel column being pushed into the dashboard (by design). A-pillar was intact even though the crash was offset, maybe 60% of the area covered in a crash. So, a very solid car by all accounts, and was it not for the dash cam data, I wouldn't believe the speed at which the impact happened just based on the damage to the car and the passenger. By any account that is a safe car, it was in fact the safest car in the world when it was produced and first ever to get a 5 star rating, BUT that car would get 0 stars today, and people looking at the scores would think it's an unsafe tin can, when in fact it's a tank on wheels, just doesn't have all the modern crash preventing systems.

If we didn't raise the bar drastically, every car would be getting 5 stars and they would become meaningless. Unfortunately, it means you can't compare stars when different test methodology was in place. The latest update was in 2020, which means you can't compare stars from 2021 and 2020 with older stars. The funny thing is, as far as the safety of modern cars goes, and I can tell a lot here working as a medical doctor in an ER, pretty much every car made in the last 15 or so years will enable you to walk away from 90% of accidents that happen under 60-70 km/h, so in line with these tests. Minor injures will sometimes occur, but nothing close to fatal. This car received 4 stars in 2011, and was considered a safe car back then. Today, it receives 0 starts, making people who don't know any better, and just judge the car by this score, think it's a tin can that's dangerous and that they're gonna die in if a bicycle crashes into him. That is why these scores are unrealistic. You have to realize, europncap, that most people who look at these scores and normal people who don't understand the depths and intricacies of the scoring system, so they won't know that the car gets 0 stars for whatever intricate reasons, but is actually a pretty safe car at the end of the day. You need to come up with a more realistic scoring system that tells the people a more realistic score. 0 for this car is nowhere near realistic.

@alexthompson8815

MrSherhi Firstly, it isn’t possible to have a car that is a “death trap” getting 3 stars. The rating system doesn’t allow that, a poor crash performance would limit the star rating even if the active safety features were good. Secondly, Euro NCAP ratings are only valid for a limited time, after which they expire - this is about 6/7 years but by that time most manufacturers have a new model to release. Thirdly, Euro NCAP change the standards so that safety keeps improving. Until there are no road deaths or serious injuries it must continue to raise the acceptable standards. To give you an example of how this works: In 2011 the state of the art was the iPhone 4. If that was reviewed against the same standards as an iPhone X today it would get a poor rating, even though it got good reviews in 2011. Everything moves on and standards change.

Incidentally, when Euro NCAP first started it did have separate scores for each area. And I don't believe my eyes! The car obviously is not the best one but it does a pretty decent job which definitely does not worth 0 points! Compare it to the crash test of a Smart which will make you laugh (or cry) where the car bounces back like.a ball from the wall! I don't need to know what the sensor radings were as it becomes obvious from the basic knowledge of physics that if the car does not stop but rather bounces back from 50 km/h to - 50 km/h, the change the driver will suffer from an impact is similar to hitting a wall at 100km/h. As the kinetic energy scales quadratically with the velocity the impact will be four (!) times more energetic! And now I am supposed to believe from the present crash test that this Fiat car has 0 point security and is as dangerous as cars without airbags or even worse with cage which does not hold the impact?! No! I rather do not believe NCAP rating which is an unfortunate outcome as in the past I liked to watch the crash tests and compare the ratings. But apparently this make no more sense! Something which sounded like a sound idea, of comparing the security of the hardware ended up in comparison of the software and gadgets! The Euro NCAP assessments introduced in 2015 look at different sized occupants such as smaller females and older children compared to 2011. There is more emphasis on improving the restraint system (e.g. seatbelts and airbags) as many cars these days have a strong compartment but we still see deaths and serious injuries in real world crashes. If the car had better safety features for the occupants it could have got 3 stars without any of the radars, etc., you refer to. Fiat have known about these requirements for 4 years but haven't done anything to improve the car (it still has an optional side airbag that the consumer would need to pay extra for - even the most budget new cars around have these as standard). Euro NCAP just assess the cars, and do it fairly so that every manufacturer is assessed in the same way - if any criticism is deserved it is Fiat for ignoring the safety of its customers and selling an old model as a new car for 7 years with no safety updates.

That is a VERY SAFE car ! look at how little that cars body deforms on the impacts, that is about as safe as whatever other new expensive production car. that you rate it "zero" is i think totaly wrong and i think Fiat should have filed a law suite against you fo talking bad after them and unnecessarily harming their business. so far i remember from the test back then you rated that panda "zero" because it has no pedestrian collision warning feature, that isnt a reason to rate a safe car like that panda "zero". if you would have rated the panda 4,5/5 or maybe only 4/5 for not having that collision warning feature, then i would have said maybe they have a point when they dont rate it fully 5/5, but "zero" as if it crumpled like a tin can is badmouthing a good product and not really a safety rating. a side pole test is missing, i assume this panda model would then perform very good too, only very little deformation. it wouldnt surprize me if you got money from luxury brands for rating this fiat panda a "zero", for people to think its a bad car and rather buy the expensive luxury cars that arent really better in regard to safety in crashs. video is years old, i was looking up the new fiat panda to see whether the backrest of the frontseats can lay back to form a bed like in the 1980s fiat panda and saw this, my thoughts on that in my opinion false low rating of a very safe car, the fiat panda. i think the engineers in fiat did a magnificent job in making a car that costs comparably so little nevertheless so very safe. the headrest on the frontseats need a stronger fixing, that headrest comes of as someone else commented already, so the head of the crashtestdummy folds to far back. that would be no problem for engineers that good to make the headrest better.

Do a real world test, Panda into a VW Up! or similar, and have your dummies bracing for impact as would actually happen. If you think you actually need lane departure warnings, autonomous braking etc to drive then catch a bus instead. NCAP is becoming as daft as the UN.
@alexthompson8815
5 жыл бұрын
Tim Slater Autonomous braking systems and lane departure systems have been shown to reduce the number of crashes that happen in the first place. Therefore if the systems work well then they get rewarded in the safety ratings. Of course you can choose not to have them, and that is a personal choice, but your risk of having a crash will increase. It doesn’t mean that you WILL crash without them, but they do have a real benefit. Interestingly, bracing for a crash (which often doesn’t happen because occupants aren’t always either aware or able to react quickly enough) wouldn’t make a big difference at all. Trying to hold yourself away from a steering wheel in a crash like the frontal test would involve trying to bench press about 30 times your body weight in about 1/10th of a second. It is a common misconception, it just isn’t possible.

The car is still being sold as a new car in 2018, with little change to the 2011 design apart from cosmetic/styling. You can buy this car new from a dealership today. It is still selling in volume in Europe. Euro NCAP regularly tests other manufacturers' new cars (such as a new Ford Focus, a new VW Polo, etc.) that are on sale in dealerships. Euro NCAP only assesses new cars that are currently on sale. The Euro NCAP assessments have changed significantly since 2011 (including different crash tests, different dummies, looking at different safety features, etc.). The Panda has been assessed in exactly the same way as any other new car that is on sale today.

Leonardo Curcio People can die at all sorts of speeds. It depends on a lot of factors such as the age/stature/frailty of the occupant and the type of crash. It isn’t possible to say whether the occupants would be killed in this type of crash, all this test is saying is that the performance of the car is significantly worse than similar cars that have had the same assessments. Essentially there is a higher risk of serious injury in this car compared to others of a similar size which have performed better in the equivalent Euro NCAP tests.

Before getting mad and talking shit about EuroNCAP go on their website and read the full report. The car's structure remained intact but adult occupant protection was poor. Children safety is terrible too. The reason for the results being worse than 2011 is that EuroNCAP have implemented more tests regarding passive safety, which showed the flaws in this and other vehicles. Also active safety systems are actually really useful and can prevent plenty of accidents or reduce their severity.
