These trains are fine when you're traveling off-peak and there's barely anyone on board. However, for a truly representative passenger experience, make this trip again but this time during morning rush hour. When it's busy and you and everyone else are clambering for seats, you will understand the flaws of its interior. The seating is too few in general and overly favouring the vis-a-vis (table) over coach style arrangement. There are unnecessarily many doors separating compartments. The doors separating these compartments close automatically at inconvenient timings. The toilets take up too much space. The rolling stock they are replacing - ICMm trainsets and ICR coaches - though they are showing their age, have much more functional and pragmatic interiors, and will be sorely missed.

I think the interior layout of the Koplopers makes more sense, this train seems to have a lot more automatic doors than it needs. I've heard the Koplopers are very nice to travel on despite their age, provided you can find one that isn't totally covered in graffiti (apparently that's a "dutch thing"). the speed difference is likely no big deal in NL given how small it is.

I hate this train already so much!! 🤡🤡🤡 For sure it is new and most of the time that is better. But, it also replaces the IC direct between Den Haag - Eindhoven. The capacity of the old train was so much higher. In the new train they use seats inefficiënt with those sofas, meeting space and to much 4 seats. The old one was simple and efficiënt. Very usefull to carry the many people in de “spits” (most busy time in the train when everyone goes from work-home). So it looks good when it is calm, but it is a horror in a rush. Nice review of the train, but in my opinion in reality it is a horror experience when its crowded😅

Priority is to replace the TRAXX/ICRm units first, as getting the Intercity direct service to 200 km/h is more important, and also the heavy TRAXX power cars were found to deform the rails on the HSL line, which is why it is still speed restricted to some sections. Other trains that run on that line are lighter and doesn't deform the rails much.

I´ve ridden these quite often between the hague and rotterdam by now, and cannot say i am a fan. Though their acceleration is rather smooth, their breaks seem to be a little too efficient for most drivers, as stopping at stations often has been rather abrupt for me multiple times compared to other rolling stock in use by the NS. Besides that i think their layout is horrible. I'm used to entering the train and walking on to find a place, but if i get on in the back at the hague centraal, it's just slow automatic door after door after door on my hunt for a seat. Compared to the traxx+ ICR (not ICM (koploper)) they even appear to have worse capacity with the common 4-seaters. I think they have to make up for this mostly in length, a single ICRm carriage for 2nd class has roughly 70 seats, a 5 carriage length ICNG has just under 260 seats.
@Vanmanyo
Жыл бұрын
Having been in the ICR and ICM I do prefer these newer Wenig stock (or whatever their nickname is!), but perhaps this is because they are quite like the ones we get over here in Britain so I'm used to the layout etc. The service was on was extremely quiet so we didn't get a sense of how it does for capacity compared to the other stock. I don't think they are bad units in any case but when a staff member asked me what I was doing and I said I was trying to go on these new units he replied "good luck" - which probably says everything you need to know! Thanks for your comment though and a subscription would be hugely appreciated! 😆

@OssWiX Yeah, i do understand what you say. Drivers need to get skills, now they just give short breaks, they will be able to do that more smooth. These new systems are better to stop themselves, how is the system working, needs updates ? Smart learning systems ?

Everyone has an opinion about these new trains. For me the ICNG is well thought off. Not everone enters a train at the end, so I presume this is more a personal argument. The number of seats cannot be compared with the ICMm, because the ICMm is 3 aor 4 carriages, the ICNG is 5 carriages (254 seats) or 8 (413 seats). The greatest difference is the room for bicycles. 12 (5 carr) of 16 (8 carr). Besides that there are some folding seats on the balconies. But besides that all, the comfort of this train is very good.

I've travelled with these trains quite a few times in the past weeks (more luck than planning), and while I'll agree that they're quite comfortable, in rush hour they're awkward. It happened a few times that upon entering, I had to walk past the big toilet first to find a seat, and it felt like it was going on forever. It felt very inefficient, and only having one door in that segment felt weird. I'm also not a fan of the 4-seater, although it is very comfortable if it's not rush hour. It's very quiet though, that's nice.

One titbit, the top.speed of these trains is 200km/h or 125 mph, not 100. Just that the traxx units they run alongside with in the hsl can only do 100 mph. Next schedule they should start doing 125 mph on the high speed line (if alstrom delivers enough trains before then)

I hate this train with the burning passion of a thousand suns. I am dutch and travel with intercities twice a day. The old trains were spacious, comfortable and sat plenty. These new ones are a disgrace, the layout is clearly designed by someone who cares more about buzzwords like sociabillity than about efficiency. The main seating option are 4 seaters (which I hate) with every chair having arm rests only 2 fingers thick (compared to the old 4-5 finger thick rests) the seats are so uncomfortable I rather sit against the window. The wifi never works, the toilet is massive and in the middle of the carriage taking up the very limited seating space there is on this train anyways. Not to mention that during rush hour when the train is jam packed with people it has no air flow and it it gets so hot the windows have condense on them. It's a joke.

I haven't been on it yet, but I am definitely looking forward to it on the Brussels-Amsterdam route. In 2024? I am not sold on the front design, though. Reminds me a bit of the Fyra face, just with a shorter muzzle. I know the Alstom Coradia sets may have a more straight front design. But it's true that the Dutch trains have something original to them, very Dutchy, so this fits that design history. Though, nothing comes close to the old Belgian scuba diver mask trains. Now, a few months ago, I took a train from Rouen to Paris, this was the new Alstom Bombardier Omneo set, double-decker, if my memory is right. An excellent train, very high quality interior, very comfortable. So, I would not rush to say that this is the best train in Europe. I think Omneo could be even better, especially on such busy routes as BXL-AMS is. Also coming from Alstom product portfolio now.

@@Vanmanyo They'd basically only have to switch the power trains on the trains themselves, and perhaps convert the relevant lines to ERTMS (something the Netherlands is unwilling to do short term because ATB functions well enough in daily life), but countries like Belgium have already completely moved over because their older signalling system (TLB) did basically nothing to protect against overspeed. Failing an ERTMS conversion, adding the UK cab signalling system to these trains should be moderately easy.
