The European mistletoe is a hemiparasitic plant that parasitizes both coniferous and deciduous trees and shrubs. The subspecies album, which I am showing you in this video, only parasitizes deciduous trees, especially rosaceae such as pear, apple, and hawthorn. However, it rarely parasitizes oaks in Spain and is also frequently seen on poplars, where birds, especially of the genus Turdus, and particularly the song thrush, which ornithologists call Turdus viscivorus, eat the mistletoe berries, hence the specific name viscivorus which means 'mistletoe eater'.
This plant has a magical aura surrounding it as it was used by the Celts for their rituals, protecting them from lightning, negative energies, and diseases. It was also considered the plant of love, fertility, and good luck. In terms of its active principles, it is very interesting because it contains amines, triterpenes, flavonoids, viscotoxins, and lectins, which are being studied for their potential role in certain cancer therapies.
I have made this video with the limited resources at my disposal, and I hope you enjoy it. Best regards.
