TLDR: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. As technology improves electronics and avionics are upgraded. This happens all the time in every weapons platform. What doesn't change is the physics of going through the air. Thoese guys in the 70's who were barely past using slide rules for calculation, really knew their stuff. They put together some damn good airframes. That's although there are many variations of jet design optimized for different things, there has never been a design that has proven superior to say, the F-15 at doing what it does. It's absurdly fast and agile for dog fighting at slightly below sonic speeds and boom and zoom style tactics at supersonic speeds which are the conditions for most air to air fights these days. When a design is near perfect for it's job you only change if the job changes. While the air superiority role has got some new wrinkles but nothing has really changed the game much.

My personal favorite story about the F22 was the time a pair of Iranian F-4s were preparing to shoot down an American drone (Over international waters, okay?), and a pair of Raptors were able to sneak right up on them. One of them flew under the F-4s to see what they were carrying, and then flew up next to them. The pilot then said. "You really ought to go home." The two Iranian jets immediately turned around and went home.
@Xedric-0

To be perfectly clear, the F-22s did this without being noticed or acknowledged until they decided to speak up. The F-4s had no idea they had been detected, approached, and examined at all. There was no capability to respond whatsoever and the F-4s were utterly outmatched.

Benjamin Franklin, one of the main founders of America, had a saying. "There has never been a good war, or a bad peace." The supersonic B1 bomber carries a heavier weapons payload than the B-52 and can fly at treetop level. Even if it is not a nuclear bomb carrying version, one of the last things you want to discover, if you are an enemy nation, is a group of American B1 bombers over your country. I worked with a US Army soldier who said the A-10 saved the lives of his men 3 times. 460 mph is not as slow as you think. The A-10 (A for Attack aircraft, B for bomber. F for Fighter) was never meant for air combat, but it the God of Close Air Support for the ground troops.
@LuvBorderCollies

460 mph was top end screaming speed in WW2 for a P-51 probably coming out of a shallow dive. Some of them who did STEEP dive bombing encountered the sound barrier. This caused control surfaces to "freeze" or flutter. A mystery for some time until scientists solved what the sound barrier was.

Worked on the F-15 Eagle from 1981 - 1992, avionics technician. While there is overlap, most aircraft have a role they excel at and other roles they can almost do. When I was in the F-15 was to take out everything from 10,000 feet into space and the F-16 Falcon would take out everything from 10,000 feet to the ground. The A-10 does poorly in contested air space, but absolutely rules in uncontested airspace. Contested airspace is when an enemy can inflict significant damage to your aircraft, from either ground based units or via enemy aircraft. Single role aircraft generally excel at their role and are better at this role than almost any other aircraft at this role, F-15 and F22 at air superiority, A-10 at CAS (Close Air Support), B-52 at bombing large areas back to the stone age, etc. The F-35 is a multi-role fighter, designed to do lots of thing very well, but not excel at anything.

Air superiority is first established by stealth fighters and bombers. My late grandfather built C-130s decades ago. He was involved in then-top-secret project to fit a Fulton surface-to-air recovery system on a C-130 for the first time. Sadly Pa died when I was still a kid, so I don't know much about that part of his life. (He owned a plant nursery by the time I was born.) Dad has always been highly amused that one of the deadliest military aircraft the US has is a cargo plane. The AC-130, the "Angel of Death," has earned that nickname. The "unicorn horn" on the snout of any plane or helicopter is a snorkle for mid-air refueling.
@prepper_nation_h
3 ай бұрын
Except the unicorn horn he was referring to was not a refueling probe. USAF aircraft don't use drogue-and-probe aerial refueling systems anyway. They use boom-and-receptacle. The unicorn horn in the video was a pitot tube used for air data collection. That particular pitot tube is not a production part, but a testing unit. You can identify it as a test part because it is painted bright orange. Standard production A-10s are not equipped with a long, snout-mounted pitot tube. Most prototype aircraft that are still undergoing flight testing are equipped with that same kind of long pitot tube on the nose, but it is replaced by smaller, redundant, fuselage mounted pitot probes on the production models.

@merryleelanehart8690 It's OK. The US Navy generally does use probe-style aerial refueling points, so it's an easy mistake to make depending on which aircraft you are looking at. The A-10 in this video had that pitot tube installed in the same location that its refueling receptacle would normally be, so it was definitely there for testing purposes and that plane is probably not on active combat duty. If I recall correctly, the tail letters were "ED" which stands for Edwards Air Force Base. There is a major aircraft testing squadron there.

They trained B52 pilots and would fly in big circles over the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains to the east and eventually over our town (we got used to just pausing conversation when they flew over and starting again when the roar dissipated), doing touch and go landings at the deep concrete long runway at the Air Force base. I would recognize the sound of those 8 big engines anywhere. The stealth tech is amazing. The huge B2 Spirit Bomber has a radar cross section equivalent in size to a bumblebee.

0:04:00 Bit of trivia: The first "stealth bomber" could be argued is the British DeHavilland Mosquito of WW2; built largely of plywood it was discovered reflected radar poorly. The Germans called them "ghost bombers"; according to German radar skies were empty, yet bombs were falling down. So German interceptors fly to investigate, but find nothing!!...the Mosquito could fly 400mph plus, which for a time made it faster than any fighter in the world. By the time Luftwaffe pilots gained altitude to investigate, the Mosquito pilot was at home drinking his tea ;) The Germans tried to create a 'German Mosquito' late in the war but another of their mistakes was they dud not make the wood glue makers a protected profession, and in trying to recreate their formulas brilliant aircraft designs were coming apart in midflight for lack of a proper woodglue.

The A-10 is a beast! "Brrrrt". A gun with wings. Seriously, they built the gun, then the plane around it. They can only pull the trigger in quick bursts for a couple seconds or they'll just burn through all their ammo. There were Iranian jets following an American drone about to shoot it down. An F-22 Raptor pulled up behind and underneath them, checked out the Iranian armaments on their wings, then pulled up besides them and called them on the radio and told them "you should go home." They went home. They never saw the F-22 on radar. Didn't see him until he called them on the radio and they looked over. Terrorussia released a video challenging the American Air Force with their "stealth" fighters. A) The Terrorussian Su-57 isn't totally stealth and B) they challenge us with all 14 of their Su-57's and I'm curious to know if they understand we have around 200 F-22's. And even more F-35's. Howitzer is the name of the artillery gun. 105mm is the shell size. Yes! Americans put one in a plane. The C130 isn't going to be in an air space by itself. It could easily be shot down. But you wouldn't want to waste your shots on it when the other fighter/bombers are just waiting for you to take a shot at it. We have planes that their only job is to find anti aircraft positions. This is done mainly by waiting for them to turn on their radar to track one of our friendlies aircraft. Once you turn on your radar, these planes lock your location and then tell everyone in the area where you are. So you either get planes coming for you or bombs/missiles coming at you.

The way the US does it -- they have the stealth planes come in and take out any ground air defenses -- then the rest come in behind and flatten everything. Once they have established air superiority they could probably send a ww2 plane into an area and not be too concerned about it being hit by ground defenses. The F-15EX likewise benefits from stealth clearing out the ground defenses -- it's basically a missile truck that can interact with the F-35's computers to target enemy planes and launch missiles while not being anywhere near them.

This video is a little old, but nearly all the information is still relevant/accurate. The F22 production line will probably be restarted, and another 100 or so may be cranked out in the near future. Details, like do the machine tools still exist, have to be worked out. The F35 cost per aircraft has actually FALLEN over the last couple of years, due to so many other nations wanting them; and projected costs being higher than reality. More produced, cost per item goes down. Low observables AKA "stealth" is using materials and shapes to absorb/scatter radar energy so the return is either too small to register ("invisible") or so marginal one cannot get a firing solution-known as a "fire control quality track". The details are eyewatering but that's the basic theory. F15s are getting upgrades to eventually become missile-trucks with the F22/F35 supplying target data. That makes the Eagle more survivable and avoids hanging ordnance on a Raptor/Lightning reducing its "stealthiness". Older F16s fly as UAVs (targets mainly), and there is a plan to enhance their unmanned capes and make them the "Unmanned" part of Manned/Unmanned teaming. Which is exactly what it implies. B1s got a reprieve (again) and about 40 -45 will still be around. They are also getting some upgraded avionics.

You would think the Spooky and Warthogs were easy targets because they were slower, however they tend to operate in areas where we hold air superiority and provide cover via fighters and AWAC.

During the Vietnam War the B-52 would drop a seemingly endless string of bombs. I know that video said most were 500 pound bombs but they'd drop mostly 1,000 or 2,000 pounders depending what the target was. For North Vietnamese underground tunnel systems in hills, the heavies were dropped. The Air Force had a 1 kilometer safety zone so friendly troops had to evac the area. After the B-52 strikes survivors would be found staggering around with blood pouring out their ears, noses, eyes and lungs. Of course their brains were not working very good. For a surface level strike with I forget how many bombs were loaded but a "box" of B-52's would destroy a path about 1 km wide and 2 to 5 miles long (depending on bomb spacing). The B-1B is a hot rod car and carries a respectable load too.

I had a cousin who was an electrical engineer that worked for General Dynamics that was over the project that developed the visor with imaging inside. He said it also had an infrared mode to tell how much fuel was in a ship or truck, or tank. It could also tell when the enemy moved weapons that left a heat or cooler image on the ground. He worked with physicists.

The A-10’s gun is truly terrifying. It fires 30 mm depleted Uranium rounds at 70 rounds per second. The bullet and shells this think fires are the same size as your forearm. Depleted Uranium will do through anything but modem ceramic composite armour.

I was on an M163 Vulcan. It was a 6 barrel 20 mm Gatlin gun mounted on A M113 track. It fired 50rounds a second. It was an air defense gun, or small armor vehicle's. I tell you, firing that thing was a rush. You could fire 30, 60, or 100 round bursts, or what was called Low No. That setting was like firing a 50 cal M2. It was retired for the Bradly.

You forgot the E-3 AWACS. No, it doesn’t have have any guns, nor does it drop bombs. What the E-3 does do, it allows the bomber / fighter packages to fly over enemy territory by seeing the entire air picture and notifying friendly aircraft when enemy aircraft are aloft. Seeing the enemy long before they see us allows us to shoot them down. As “eyes in the sky,” the E-3 guides our friendly aircraft to the enemy aircraft. Our fighter’s air-to-air missiles have a greater kill range than the enemy’s aircraft’s onboard radar. Thus, easy kills. Anyway, recommend looking into the E-3 and its capabilities. NATO also has an AWACS fleet and they’re 8:54 stationed in Geilenkirchen Germany. Have a great day, from Oklahoma!!

The C-130 is generally a cargo aircraft (which the exception of the AC-130) and doesn't operate in areas where we don't have aerial superiority. Being a cargo aircraft, they are vulnerable to ground fire, and certainly fire from fighter aircraft.

The C-130 is a transport plane. It doesn't carry weapons, usually. I've heard a lot of good things about the A-10. The B-52 is a plane I've seen all my life. Seemingly. I giggle about the "outrigger" wheels on the wings. Because of the length of a 52s wings, the wheels are so the wings don't drag on the runway. I've seen some of the 52s take off at DMAFB in Tucson, AZ. Air Force brat, the child of a former member of the Air Force.

3:25 The shape and angles of the aircraft are moulded in such a way that the electromagnetic waves cannot easily "ping" off it without being scattered..it is like breaking a mirror.. if you want to see yourself accurately you need to move closer and closer and look at funny angles in order to see yourself in the reflection.. The F22 being "invisible" to radar is due to a similar concept.

the C-130 is primarily a cargo plane. it's designed to move troops and supplies, not really bombs. it's use as a "gun ship" or droping the MOAB is strictly for instances where the enemy has no anti-air capabilities. you only use them as support craft, never as the tip of the spear.

Stealth planes have the ability to evade radar as they are designed to reduce their radar cross-section using material and other design features such as smooth edges, radar absorbing material and internal design that absorbs and traps the radar signals inside the structure and also special coating to reduce infrared signature and detection. So a palne can look the size of a bird or even be invisible at times.

They update the electronics and stuff. They aren't identical to the planes as they were originally designed. They used to say the military was about 20 years ahead of the consumer market when it came to tech (but I don't think the gap is quite that long anymore with the exponential growth we get in tech advancements now).

The F-15 was my nephew’s plane when he graduated from the Air Force Academy. He flew in Afghanistan and said when he let loose all the weapons at once, aka the Death Angel, the plane flies backward for an instant. I laughed at him when he mentioned flying a C130. Asking what it was like to fly a plane that was old before he was born. He said it keeps getting upgraded and is essential to the militaries of the world. They are still being made.

Radar Invisible is more of a simplified way of stating how it actually works. Using the materials which absorbs radar waves, and a shape which helps disrupt radar waves returning to the source, it minimizes what the radar actually sees. Publicly it's disclosed that the signature an F-22 has on Radar, is about the same size as a bumblebee. You won't know it's an aircraft until it's too late to do anything about it. The actual origins of the concept can be traced back to world war II. The British had a wooden plane called the Mosquito, and with the advent of Radar, wood had different radar properties than metal, which allowed it to do things like basically spawn kill luftwaffe aircraft, by already being in the air, and circling around a region when a bombing raid was going on, so when the Luftwaffe pilots would take off into the air to defend against the bombing raid, it was unknown to them that there were Mosquitos in the air hunting them. And the radar in their aircraft wasn't particularly good at detecting the wood of the airframes, which just compounded the issues faced by Luftwaffe pilots. The mosquito was such a problem, it led to a German attempt at their own version the Moskito.

The gun on the A-10 is so fast amd so powerful they can only fire it in short bursts. If a pilot lays on the gun too long the recoil is enough to actually stall the plane's air speed, and just make it drop

Check out the c- 130 in action. In Vietnam the troops called it Puff the Magic Dragon. It would arrive and like a friendly dragon it destroyed your enemies. You asked what the howitzer is. It is a small cannon that shoots from a side door. It also has several other ridiculous weapons. It is used for highly accurate close troop air support

Chris, My favorite airplane is the A-10 warthog. Next is the C-130. You'll see one in a bit. The hog is like a flying tank. The Raptor is amazing bird!! Those stealth airplanes use special coating and angles that don't reflect radar beams. And their engines are placed in such a manner that their exhaust is hidden. Prevents some systems from spotting them. The C-130's are amazing and have had a long life. They are tough. The hurricane-hunters fly them into and thru hurricanes. And they can operate in primitive airstrips..The more high tech airplane need more support and such. Take care and have a great 2024!!

Your videos are great! I appreciate your curiosity. It has given me a boost in morale about my own country, and reminded me of how good we have it here even though it isn't perfect! I live near Dayton, Ohio and Wright Patterson Air Force Base (which is the largest Air Force Bases in the USA). My step father served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Germany for a time. Here in Dayton, Ohio we have the US Air Force Museum (no charge for admission) which is a very large museum with hundreds of planes, bombers, missiles and artifacts from the World Wars and more. We also have the training module of the Space Shuttle. If you are ever in Ohio, the Air Force Musuem is a great place to stop, usually retired Air Force guides are there to explain the planes and tell personal stories about them. I recommend you visit if possible. Thanks for the videos. I am of German ancestry (my family last name was Anglicized during WWI). So, I do have a special place in my heart for Germany since it is the land of my ancestors! I also recommed Cincinnati Ohio (not far from Dayton and the Air Force museum) if you're ever in Ohio. It has tons of German landmarks and architecture and even food, and the largest Oktoberfest in the world except for the one in Munich!

The A-10 fires like 3200 rounds per minute, if it could 1,Hold that much ammo, and 2, if it could fire for that long. Pilots only fire a couple hundred rounds per burst to avoid overheating and melting the barrels. It takes about 20 seconds of holding the trigger down to fire the full stock of ammo they carry per flight.
