Today, I would like to tell you about europium, an unusual metal. Europium is a rather active f group metal in the lanthanide series on the periodic table. It is a very active metal and its chemical activity can be compared to lithium. That is why europeum is stored in containers filled with an inert atmosphere to protect against oxidation. By the way, europium is paramagnetic and is attracted to powerful neodymium magnets. This metal is also very expensive. I paid 20 dollars for 1 gram of the metal. Of course, I could have bought a whole ton of the metal for 70 cents per gram but I didn’t feel like doing that. When taken out of its container, europium is a shiny metal that is quickly covered in its oxide and yellow carbonate. It is a pretty soft metal. Europium can easily be cut with pliers. Its softness can be compared to lead. Europium actively reacts with water like lithium and calcium forming poorly soluble yellow europium hydroxide. As time passes, the metal is covered in a thick layer of hydroxide and the reaction slows down. If mixed with hydrochloric acid, the reaction speeds up significantly, because europium dissolves in hydrochloric acid very well to produce yellow europium chloride. By the way, I was surprised by one property of europium chloride. Freshly made europium chloride solution fully blocks ultraviolet light when an ultraviolet laser is pointed at it - which is pretty strange because usually europium salts glow in ultraviolet light. This effect is clearly observed if one tries to pass a beam of ultraviolet laser through europium chloride solution with a flask filled with a green emitting luminophore solution behind it. Even more interestingly, when the solution had been stored in a dark place for a couple of days, it began glowing red-orange in ultraviolet light and stopped blocking ultraviolet laser beams. I think this effect is somehow linked to the fact that the radius of europium’s atoms is large and the atoms have f-orbitals. Let’s move on. If mixed with an alkali - sodium hydroxide with europium chloride, a yellow precipitate of europium hydroxide is formed. Like many other lanthanide hydroxides, europium hydroxide dissolves in disodium edetate - a kettle limescale remover - to form a soluble complex. If you try to burn a piece of europium in air, contrary to your expectations, it won’t burn although its chemical activity should allow this to happen. I think this may be due to the its high melting point. On exposing europium to air it forms europium oxide that also colours the flame red. This oxide, as well as europium chloride, glows red in ultraviolet light. Europium oxide, as well as its other compounds, are an important component of a well known luminophore powder based on strontium aluminate. These differently colored powders are sold abundantly on the Internet have a unique property. These powders glow in ultraviolet light and also accumulate light energy so that they can glow for a few hours after the light has been turned off. Such powders are used in the applied arts and they are also added to lots of dyes, especially those that are used to paint the tips of clock hands so that they glow in the dark. Europium is an afterglow activator in these powders and also increases the brightness of the residual light. The colour of the powder depends on its composition. To obtain other colors, other rare-earth metal compounds are added. Europium oxide is also used in displays to make the red pixels and is also used to make fluorescent lamplight warmer. Europium is also used to protect the dyes of euro banknotes. Europium protects euros. What an interesting coincidence. Perhaps californium is used to protect dollars!

Europium has two oxidation states: 2+ gives blue light and 3+ gives red light under UV. I made RE doped phosphors: kzitem.info/news/bejne/2WOltGmshoxja4I I also made RE doped glasses: kzitem.info/news/bejne/r2aZv4xjqWObkoo Tomorrow I'll test the glasses for infrared emission under laser light. RE compounds seem lot of fun to experiment with.

I think the best part of the whole video is that europium is used to protect the euro and californium is use to protect the dollar. That's awesome. I love it. I've always been into this kind of stuff. I can't afford to donate to your channel right now but I can tell you a way to increase your revenue. You should look into putting your videos on Steemit. They are trying to get STEM content on their platform right now. The STEM group will actively support Steemit posts that fit into the sciences and technology category. The Steemit platform is also heavily promoting their video platform Dtube right now. Any posts on Steemit that link to Dtube are actively supported by the Dtube community. Videos like yours if posted on Dtube and linked to Steemit would fit into both categories. I can't speak for anyone else but I'd watch your content. I'm just a user of the Steemit platform and am not affiliated with either of the groups I mentioned. This is just a friendly tip from one of your KZitem subscribers. Thanks for the fantastic content.

I was thinking more in addition to KZitem not instead of KZitem. I do have some issues with KZitem's policies but they are my issues and not necessarily his. I was just suggesting it as an additional revenue stream. It would help the Steem platform, which I support and want to make better and it would give him an opportunity to make more money as well. I don't know the value of this channel but I suspect getting off of KZitem would probably not be a smart decision. That wasn't what I was suggesting.

The reason it blocks UV light is because europium(II) chloride forms which seems to be a strong UV absorber. In the presence of excess HCl it oxidizes to europium(III) which has its characteristic emission spectrum and red fluorescence.
@T3sl4

Probably the freshly prepared Eu chloride solution was Eu(II) which happens to absorb, while oxidized Eu(III) fluoresces.
