The e320 Velaro set that does the outbound working from London returns to Brussels with passengers from Amsterdam and Rotterdam. At present I believe this train terminates in platform 3 at Brussels Midi and then works empty to Forest depot, with it's onward path to London taken by another set that starts it's journey in platforms 1/2 (taking passengers that have cleared security and immigration in the Channel Terminal). I saw the set arrive from Amsterdam last week, as we prepared to leave for London. There were no inbound departures to the UK showing as leaving from platform 3, although the facilities needed to segregate that track from the rest of the station are there.

Since there are no Eurostar trains to anywhere but London you're going to have to change trains. How much better is it to not have to change trains at Brussels to go on to Amsterdam? Not a bad idea. Do book in advance, though, as prices can go up quite a bit when you wait too long. To give an example, if you want to leave today, the cheapest Standard fare is €199 for Brussels-London... For tomorrow, there are still tickets at €89, but still. I leave it up to you if you think Business Premier is worth it. Personally, I don't think it's worth it. Yes, you get hot food (and it does look good), but generally I'm lucky enough to be flexible with my travel dates and hours, and I can get a much cheaper ticket on another train, even in Standard Premier, which offers the same type of seats, but only cold food (which is, if you ask me, good, but not quite enough, others aren't fans, though), so I might try Business Premier out if there's a rare occasion I need to travel virtually instantly on a very specific train with Standard being sold out, and Standard Premier being less then €30-40 cheaper, as that's what I might pay for a decent meal in a restaurant.

The builders of the St. Pancras station as a London terminus for their Midland Railway in 1868 might not have been able to envision this milestone; London to Amsterdam in just 3 hours 41 minutes. Well, Amtrak is replacing the Acela with trainsets that can go 220 mph (350 km/h) in 4 years... or 160 mph if they don't get funding for track improvements. I wouldn't hold my breath on that with the current administration's idea of infrastructure "spending" though.

PLEASE, LMAO! The United States can barely catch up to the Chinese with their high speed rail network which is expanding more and more with each passing year. The US will NEVER get to the same level that Eurostar or any other high speed rail network in any country, are on now. It would take over 20 years to even catch up to what China's rail network is right now.

A couple of years ago we took the train from Amsterdam to London. It was a wonderful experience. Smooth ride, nice passengers (especially the group we met from Spain), and facing chairs with a table in the middle. The train was so very quick. It was much better than the Midnight Train we took from Stuttgart to Amsterdam. That took forever and was incredibly uncomfortable .

@@bowlerstuff9589 But maintain it for as long as possible. They run on non-segregated lines and still outperform many 'high-speed' routes'. These are intercity to cover all towns and cities and are not high-speed intercity's. Not fair to compare apples with oranges. As an Intercity network, it is actually the fastest in the world over all and only one line is faster for same comparison - Berlin-Hamburg line which has ETCS that is only just about to be installed on UK network. We are also building a high speed domestic route and that will be amongst the fastest in the world. The next 10 years in the UK are very exciting for built environment and transport.
@fetchstixRHD
3 жыл бұрын
@@richardwills-woodward5340: I think ETCS is a bit of a red herring here - it’s unlikely to actually increase top speeds in many places, as you’ll still have a bunch of other trains to deal with. In fact HS2’s main purpose is to get the faster trains onto their own set of tracks (and while you’re constructing those tracks, may as well add some extra speed) so that there aren’t as many competing needs and the classic lines can have more capacity too. Of course, if/when HS2 fully gets built, there may be 3 hour journey times from London to Scotland, which would beat Eurostar as they are now! (Well, that’s if the marketing is to believed anyways...)

Hi Paul, as I thought, the maximum speed of a Siemens Class 374 Eurostar e320 Velaro EMU train is 200 mph or 320 km/h. Therefore it is faster than the original Class 373 Eurostars, which have a top speed of 186 mph or 300 km/h. For your information, some of the original Class 373 Eurostars have received an interior refurbishment matching the Class 374 Eurostar e320 Velaro EMU train, however they will not be able to run at 200 mph or 320 km/h. Trains never travel at the speed quoted by the mfr. It's like saying your wired ethernet is going to give to 1000mbps, but even just on your home network your lucky to get 150-200 mbps. It's a theoretical value if all of the factors are in perfect alignment. For a train that means being in a wind tube that has a vacuum pressure within the tunnel to limit wind resistance.
@suicidalcupcake222
6 жыл бұрын
wizbang68 what you are saying is incorrect. The speed of 200mph quoted for the Eurostar e320 can be achieved by the train on any track that is certified for that speed (e.g. the LGV Est europeenne). What you said about wind tunnels with a vacuum is nonesense.
@EdgyNumber1
6 жыл бұрын
SuicidalCupCake They are limited in the tunnels but that's just for general safety and probably maintenance cost reasons. As soon as these get on a certified LGV line they can hit the 200mph.. I'm hoping we get the same tech for HS2, London to Birmingham and Manchester. Question is, Hitachi or Siemens...?

I know quite some people who equally hate the new interior, as it's too bright. You know what they say about tastes.. I love the old trains, but they had gotten a little worn out. I had to get used to the new ones, too, the seats are somewhat harder than the old ones, and they're also slightly slimmer, I think. but I'm converted, now, the E320s are lovely trains.

I did that a month ago. This service is faster than flying between the two great cities. I really enjoy your reports, Paul.

Excellent video Paul I adore your train trip reports being I'm a huge train geek. Sure I do like cartoons and animes and video games but my deepest love is trains. My first time taking the train was when I moved back to Chicago from Cincinnati on Amtrak Cardinal. And I have taken every single CTA L Line to both ends and I have been on all but one Metra Lines which is Metra Heritage Corridor from Union Station in Downtown Chicago to Joliet but it only goes to Joliet on weekday afternoon rush hour so I would have to transfer to Metra Rock Island District Line to get back to Downtown Chicago. Besides my South Shore Line trip my next big trip is St Louis on The Amtrak Lincoln Service but I'm planning on doing it on the 1st day when they start the high speed rail between here and St Louis within the next year. I'm hoping to take a long distance Amtrak Trip in the future to see what it's like and for the enjoyment of riding the train the old fashioned way of getting around the country. It shouldn't be the about how fast you can get to your destination it's the journey you have and the scenery you see while getting to your destination.

Love the video, thanks for uploading it and also giving us a rough estimate of the ticket price and how the seats, the gallery and other areas of the train look like with the exact time of arrival. My only issue with this journey is that this train is for people who live in London or surrounding areas and the same for Brussels, Rotterdam and obviously Amsterdam, but passengers who live away from these cities will not be able to use this train economically nor monetarily for example if you are based in midlands, taking a train from there to London Euston is 1 hour plus that is if you take Virgin, then it’s travelling from Euston to St. Pancreas, add 3 hours 41 minutes to it plus it doesn’t the stop in The Hague which is the capital of Holland where most of the bureaucrats live and work, journey back from Amsterdam to The Hague is roughly 50 minutes plus waiting time and buying another ticket, all in all it will take around 9 hours plus trip if you chose this mode of transportation, plus with UK choosing to be out of EU, there will immigration checks and more rigid ones which will add to the journey time. It will be a very long day taking a train when you can do it with plane in 55 minutes even with check ins etc it will be less than half the time it takes in a train for sure. I think they should have chosen more stops ( The Hague) even if it was for 3 minutes and also some kind of special train from other parts of England to reach London St. Pancreas. I would try it once just for the novelty but it won’t be my first choice to travel to Holland unless Eurostar’s does something for passengers who live in midlands or other parts of England to connect them to Eurostar. I love the video though. Thanks!
@vlantrot1163

Vikram Singh if you want to go to The Hague, just change trains in Rotterdam. Every 15 minutes both a train and a metro leaves that takes you to The Hague in 20 minutes. The Eurostar would take the same amount of time because there is no high speed rail going to The Hague. Also, it is always the case that you have to go to the station/airport first whether you take the train or a plane.

As you can imagine I've been awaiting this upload Paul! Pity I was on a Norwegian Dreamliner to Seattle at the time :) My pangs and rose-tinted glasses about no longer being there soon lifted when I noticed that the Paris departure ahead of the Amsterdam train was cancelled - set shortage, I wonder? It was nice to see some of my former colleagues too. A pity you didn't mention that there is no return service though - but I know it's always easy to be wiser after a rush video. I guess the trains will run empty back to Brux? Seems a massive waste if that's the case, I guess politics wouldn't let Eurostar compete with Thalys, who in turn probably aren't interested in a wet lease agreement. Anyway, thanks for getting that done and out so quickly, really appreciate it!

SNCF strikes meant a tranche of E* cancellations - bet you’re glad not to have been working! However our train was fortunately unaffected. Didn’t really want to mention the return trip, a conscious decision, as it would likely trigger a Brexit/immigration debate in the comments (I learned my lesson from the Irish Enterprise video I uploaded last year!!). There were quite a few staff on board travelling as passengers or “extra help” - impressively, a lot of them have official Twitter accounts which is very welcome and I’m glad Eurostar encourages them! Hope you enjoyed your empty middle seat...

The reason why there is no service back to London from Amsterdam is based on the fact that there simply is not enough space available at Amsterdam or Rotterdam to have a platform completely seperated from the others. This would be required to properly perform the UK immigration control precedures before entering the train.
@andrewjditton

The terminal is already there on Platform 15B at Amsterdam Centraal and the pathways are booked. The reason that there is no return service is lack of governmental agreement about the border control procedures. I respect Paul's decision not to mention this as many people (including myself) feel very strongly about this, and this page is for trip reports, not political rants!

Since they can't run the return journey, do they just run an empty train all the way back to London or do they go as far as Brussels and start a journey from there instead? I don't see why they can't just make people get off in Brussels, go through passport control then back on board?
