Hello everyone, and welcome back to another video! I feel like this topic has been in the back of many peoples' minds every time this occurs, but I haven't found any sort of compilation looking at all of the songs together. There have only been 2 Eurovision Song Contests that ended in some sort of tie for first place, but what about national finals?
This video is a recap of all songs that got selected for Eurovision by narrowly winning a tiebreak in their national selection! Essentially, these entries came the closest to us completely missing out on seeing them at the contest- and 2 of them actually went onto win.
Most of these songs (apart from one) came from proper national finals, with the other being an internal selection. You will be able to see details about the national finals themselves, the songs they tied with, and the system used for determining the winner- because believe me, I was surprised at the wide variety of methods they used!
I do realise this video is particularly well timed considering what happened in the Kazakh national final for Junior Eurovision yesterday and the rather unique solution they had- I wonder if we'll ever see this method in a future regular national final?
I have used the official Eurovision performance footage for all of them simply because finding good quality national final performances (especially for old years) is quite tough. There is also quite a lot of missing results data for a few national finals (especially the older ones) so there are probably more songs out there that should be on the list.
Please note that I have only considered the final stages of each selection that were supposed to determine the winner- for example, Eesti Laul 2021 isn't included because while the first round of the final was a 3 way tie, the televote-only superfinal ended in a convincing lead. Special shoutout to the Moldova in 2006, who had to have 2 national finals due to the first one ending in a 3 way tie without any backup solution! The Ukrainian national final in 2010 also ended in a tie, but the winning song was later changed.
Spoiler alert
Something I found interesting was the fact that Portugal (in between ties) changed their tiebreaker method from prioritising the jury to the televote, while Spain went the exact opposite way! Croatia also did the same as Portugal, but going even further in 2021 by changing their system to make ties less likely. Many national finals (especially the modern ones) which use a combination of jury and televote could fall out of these traps by looking up to Croatia as an example!
I hope you found this video interesting. If you enjoyed it, remember to give the video a like, comment, and subscribe to the channel for more content like this!
