As mentioned a while ago, my goal is to go back and make rankings on past years of Eurovision, with 1996 being up next!
The 1996 contest of Eurovision took place in the Norwegian capital Oslo. A total of 23 countries competed this year.
The 1996 contest was won by Ireland, achieving a record seventh victory with Eimear Quinn's "The Voice". Host country Norway finished in 2nd place with Elisabeth Andreassen's "I Evighet". Third place was achieved by Sweden with One More Time's "Den Vilda".
This year was a little different than others, in that a pre-qualifying round was used, where all competing countries aside from the host performed, and of these, 7 countries would not make it to the contest in Oslo. These seven songs are not taking into account in this ranking.
Among the non-returning countries who failed to make the cut was Denmark, Hungary, Israel, North Macedonia, Romania, Russia, and also Germany who marked 1996 as the only year where we did not see Germany in Eurovision.
In return, we saw Estonia, Finland, the Netherlands, Slovakia and Switzerland return to the contest after previously having been relegated in the 1995 contest.
