Mr. Eustache's "Suite Concertante for World Woodwinds & Symphony Orchestra", was world-premiered on 2-8-09 under the baton of his fellow-countryman & most celebrated young orchestral conductor in the world, Mtro. Gustavo Dudamel, with his world renown "Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar". This 45 min. long-12 movements-21 solo world-WWs sonic-global 'tour de force' is a 'first' in the concertante-symphonic repertoire. It directly reflects the cultural-interconnected reality of our times: while inspired by different music cultures of the world it is formally based on the western classical music concertante-symphonic tradition.
Movs. I - II Asia: India: Raga Todi, Parts 1 & 2.: Inspired in the classical music of North India. This musical tradition does not use harmony as we know it in western music: the whole musical discourse is knitted purely with both melody & rhythm. Based on the Raga known as Mian KI Todi [the Raga is an extremely complex structural musical form that rules the melodic element] and over several rhythmic forms [known as Tala], different musical elements are used yielding universal artistic results... Typically a Hindustani Classical concert-where improvisation is paramount-starts with the Alap, a slow, improvised introduction-exposition of the Raga performed by the melodic soloist, not based on any specific rhythmic beat. That is followed by the Gats, or fixed compositions based on different Talas [rhythmic cycles], & are easily recognized by the use of the drums. Here the Gats are in Tintal first, then in Sitharkhani [both are 16-beats based Talas, grouped: 4 4 4 4, though with completely different feel]. This form uses dynamic elements of tension & release, both in the melodic & rhythmic components that connect with the listeners beyond limiting geographic-cultural factors.
Solo World Woodwind Instrument(s): D King Bansuri*, RaKIba*, Picc King Bansuri*. I used some of these in The Passion Of The Christ soundtrack [the Bansuri is the traditional transverse bamboo flute used in the classical music of North India]
