A 50amp extension cord hung out the window is basically unprotected for anything other than overcurrent protection (provided by the circuit breaker). @798Muchoman
Жыл бұрын
A trickle charger like those used are designed to just plug into an outlet. It doesn't draw absurd amounts of power, and reduces draw if there are other loads on the circuit. If no extension cord is used, it's safe, as the main cord is smart enough to detect if it's overheating by measuring the resistance. The real problem is using a poorly rated extension cord or as a tripping hazard. It is better to have a dedicated charger, but these aren't horrible on their own
@3dw3dw
Жыл бұрын
True story John, except that it doesn't measure resistance. It does it by monitoring voltage drop of the supply circuit. That way even if a long extension cord is used the vehicle can still limit current draw to within a safe range. The cord is not where the smart is though. The smart is in the inverter built into the car. The smart that is in the cord is actually a switch that is controlled by the car. That is, the Plug (part that inserts into the car) on the supply cable is not powered even when plugged into the outlet. The switch in the supply cord is controlled by the car. So the car turns this switch on once it recognizes a valid connection and is ready to begin charging.

Hes actually correct according to electrical code in most AHJ in the US. The amperage drawn through these cords are limited by length , the longer the cord , the more heat the cord imparts in its sheathing. If it were powering a simple 75 watt light , then daisy chain away . But , an EV pulls quite a bit more amperage, meaning it's putting a lot more heat into those 14 gauge wires. Not good . So risking burning down ones house to charge their car ? To each there own I guess. What we may see in the future is local code enforcement citing folks for similar things . @@danielvandermerwe7921 Are you sure you know what you’re talking about? There are different ways to wire a car charger. The standard is 50 amp, 240volts. If you do that, your car would fully charge quicker, like 4-6 hours, but it’s expensive. If you were to run your car on a regular (3-prong) 120 volt outlet (if your in the USA), it may take 15-25 hours depending on the car. If you do it the right way with the larger 50A,240v circuit, the cable has to be in conduit and the cost of the cable and conduit is around $10 per foot. You also need some other material too, and the labor to install all of this neatly around any obstacles. I can’t see anyone possibly buying this material for $90 unless their circuit breaker panel is in the garage and the outlet is going right next to it. Say for a typical house with the panel in the basement and the charger in the garage maybe 60’ away, the material alone is probably around $600 without even buying the actual car charger that has to plug into it. A job like that would easily be $1,000-1,200 including parts and labor. That’s not a scam, that’s a real contractor doing the correct job for the correct price. What size and voltage circuit did you run and how close is it to your panel? Also, did the guy see your house before giving you the price? I have an electric grass mower and can confirm that extension cords work perfectly outdoors too. The trip hazard is the only thing you need to mitigate. In some countries the government may install a U-slot in the pavement, where you can drop in the cable. If your government is less cooperative, there are many industrial and fully certified plastic or rubber trip-prevention solutions for cables, no need to resort to duct-tape. If you don't have an outdoor outlet, running an extension cord through a window or any other opening is perfectly fine, possible even safer than any outdoor outlet.

My dad does that since the stove plug is the only one that the charger will accept power from. It's not an "extension" cord like he's saying, it's the charger cord. Other than the time it takes to charge his car he's never had a problem doing it this way. He doesn't have a garage and even if he did getting someone to wire up a dedicated circuit, run cabling and buying the faster wall mounted charge unit is really expensive. There's a big difference between charging your cell phone or powering a heater so you don't freeze to death when your furnace goes out than it is charging EV's EV's are marketed as green when they're dirtier than a combustion powered car is. A majority of the electricity in use comes from fossil fuels. Anyone that even knows a little about loss of energy aka energy conservation knows that you never get what was initially put in. It takes more power aka fuel to make electricity with a huge loss of energy in the form of heat. It's more efficient to use those fuels to directly power a motor than it is to power a generator to create electricity to power an electric car. I haven't even factored in the environmental impact to obtain the elements required to make the batteries all mined with you guessed it machinery that relies on fossil fuels. We already have a energy supply problem and it's only going to get worse the more people own electric vehicles. This is completely fine if it isnt drawing more power than the extension cable is rated for, and judging by the thickness, those cables don't look like standard extension cables rated for 10 or 12 amps. The breaker would flip before too much power is drawn if the correct extension cable is used. The prospect of someone using a bad extension cable is the most dangerous possible outcome here.

@Justin Folse Strange, I have yet to meet a decent person who criticizes EV's. They are usually dim-witted and unable to see the emergence of EV's as a transition period of technological change, similar to the development of human flight, electricity, etc. They usually hate change. They are frightened by the pace of technological and cultural change.

@chiphill4856

@@TheAnnoyingBoss Petrochemical fuel is poisonous in case you haven't heard. Ever spill it on live grass? Ever ingest it? There's more to the decision than how many miles one can drive on one fill-up or charge. In addition, it's helpful to realize we are in the early adopter phase of electric vehicles, the technology is still developing. Much will change in the next 10 years and 20 years.
@That-Guy_

@@TheAnnoyingBoss The current energy generation mix in the US is 55% fossil fuels, 21% nuclear and 24% renewables. The average efficiency for fossil fuel and nuclear power plants is 36% which accounts for 76% of total energy production. The 24% that is renewable is effectively 100% efficient (as sunshine and wind are free) this means the total average power generation efficiency is 51.36%. The transmission line efficiency is 95%, charger efficiency is 92%, inverter efficiency is 95% and motor efficiency is 90%. That means the total end-to-end efficiency for EVs is 38.38%. The internal combustion engine (ICE) is 30-35% efficient before we include the losses that got the oil to the gas tank. The well-to-tank efficiency is 80% which makes the end-to-end efficiency for ICE 24-28%. So EVs are 10 to 14% more efficient than ICE but that’s not the real issue. When it comes to transportation the issue is ground level pollution. EVs output zero emissions at ground level whereas ICE output carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and unburned hydrocarbons that are health hazards that cause damage to the human respiratory tract and increase a person's vulnerability to, and the severity of, respiratory infections and asthma, nose, throat and lung irritation, coughing and shortness of breath. Exposure to fine particles can also affect lung function and worsen medical conditions such as asthma and heart disease. EVs also produce far less noise pollution. Related effects of noise pollution include stress related illnesses, high blood pressure, speech interference, hearing loss and sleep disruption. Even if we didn’t have to worry about climate change, ICE is still a bad idea as oil is a finite resource and will run out. We must go to a sustainable solution and currently EVs are the best option, even more so when they are fully powered by renewable energy.

@@That-Guy_ Oil won't run out, as you've been lied to about it being a "fossil fuel." Crude oil doesn't contain the same list of elements as either animals or plants. So it's impossible. Russian scientists say that crude oil is produced naturally deep in the earth and will never actually run out. Also, the electricity that EVs run on is generated from fuels that put pollution in the air. So EVs just move the pollution from one place to another. Anyway, there are only two single car public EV chargers in my whole county. So don't try traveling through here with an EV. But there are gas stations on every corner.
