Nice to see guys like this doing kit conversions for cars in a way that doesn't require cutting up the car to do it. Makes it easier for people to do on their own car in their home/garage, and for small businesses that restore old/classic cars so they can concentrate on the body and aesthetics of the car and be able to just drop in an electric drivetrain. Helps preserve not only the looks and functions of the car but also leaves the safety features of the car in place without having to cut into and affecting crumple zones, and not having to add a bunch of braces welded in to keep the car from falling apart because of modifications done to the chassis.

Yeah I was thinking something similar. It’s not actually any faster, it’s a bit heavier, doesn’t go as far and misses some driver involvement. So why would you do it?
@questioner1596
3 жыл бұрын
Many older EV conversions kept the original transmissions, but that would keep weight higher and destroy their excellent packaging and balance. Plus, the transmission is kind of silly when the motor has such a broad torque curve and big rpm spread. You also no longer need a clutch pedal, because there is so little rotational mass, letting off the go pedal during shifts is enough.
@questioner1596
3 жыл бұрын
@Rubedo Alaberti, I do prefer manual transmissions in my internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, that wasn't my point. When converting a car to EV, some builders keep the manual transmission, but remove the clutch pedal. The electric motor doesn't need to idle at a stop, and there is less rotational mass so pressing the clutch on shifts is also not needed. Shifting gears is also not often beneficial because of the electric motor's wide torque curve. My point is that keeping a manual transmission in an electric conversion loses some of the fun of a manual paired to an ICE.

@@callummunro5400 well I'd do it to get a commuter car that I barely pay to upkeep or "fuel" up, still fun to drive, and costs less than a new car. Tesla deserves a lot of credit for pushing the industry into electrification but I think series production of GM's announced range of EV drivetrains will likely be a more important event simply because of their overall experience building cars and much larger production capacity. There are other huge players coming on line as well, but GM sells a massive number of trucks and those vehicles will become the donors for future hotrods on a scale that dwarfs what is happening today. The work of Zero EV and others will be vital to the future of the car hobby and I look forward to what these folks will be able to do when they start having a wider range of EV drivetrains to choose from.

Btw, I'd love to see my Mazda RX-8 converted into a 4680 range-power "extended" PHEV via a differential-fronted e-motor to reduce daily gas use & help power/torque on track days. Would be fine paying 4x of what a turbo-supercharger add-on would cost. Range would only need to be enough for maybe 3x20minute track sessions between a lunchtime supercharging. Knowing fellow rotor heads (12 RX-7/8s between my son & I, since my '86 GSL-SE) that would be MAGIC!!! A frame reinforcing battery pack (under/replacing passenger feet/seats?) would be ideal. Electric motive power is potentially far more exciting - a perfectly flat monster torque curve that starts at zero rpm? Jay Leno reckons that electric cars will mean we get to keep our V8s to take out for a spin on a couple of fine sunny days a year. When people stopped using horses for transport, & started using them just to have fun, a lot of people discovered how much fun cars & motorbikes were, & gave up bothering with horses at all. A lot, but not everybody. An electric car that can do the whole 'wind in your hair' thing, & which handles exactly like a stock MX-5, is surely just what the doctor ordered for pollution saturated urban areas, & the polar bears will thank you as well.

The late great Jack Rickard (RIP) created a Model 3 inverter for solar storage using the whole battery pack without needing to open it up, he just hacked into the pack and he made a 75kWh power wall. As Jack Rickard said, with the large number of Model 3 cars on the road there will be an endless supply of battery packs available from all the people crashing their cars. Car manufacturers THIS is the EV i want! Simple, light, rwd 2 seater roadster (or coupe), reasonable range, and not a ton of power. Not everyone who is looking for an EV wants a 2.5 tonne 700 hp SUV with 18 cameras monitoring your every move. If you want people to adopt EV's then you have to start giving people options.

Hey Jonny, Love the channel and loved the car.... until.... The price!!!! ... 20k... I'm sorry but for a weekender if I had 20k to spend... Petrol all the way. I would happily commute in a square EV box that I could clamber in and say "work" and it would take me there. For weekend use I want the viseral petrol heart beat, the smell, and the sense of soul to a car. I understand them making this as a platform for other vehicles but 20k feels steep for a mk2 mx5 and maybe about 20 years to early for the weekend warriors. I hope they do well I really do because I applaud their engineering.

Let's supposed you were making a prototype for an EV kit system to fit into expensive cars like the ones shown later in the video. Would you do the prototype work on one of those expensive cars? Or would you first get an inexpensive (but representative size/shape) car to do the prototyping on?
@theracingmotorist

@@Graham_Wideman oh I totally agree. As I say I applaud their engineering. It's excellent that they have managed to keep faithful to the 50 50 etc and I can see why they did r&d on such a cheap but well built vehicle. Very clever. However I still think, for me, that a weekender will be petrol forever. Electric will always be fast and exciting in its own way. For me a big part of the soul of motoring is the smell and the sound, they add so much to the experience. However for others they will want an electric weekender and that's where these guys can fit in. I wish them all the luck in the world because the car industry is not suddenly going to become easy for small companies just because it's gone electric. It will be as hard as ever.

Up front cost seems a bit OTT, but £20,000 equates to about 60,000 miles on petrol, assuming you can charge the MX5 from your own solar panels at home... so it pays for itself in not many years, & then it's all free miles :-)

I so want to ev swap a modern ford transit custom, something like a 200mile range at around 200-300bhp would be amazing rwd and around 1 tone pay load. May look at building on myself in 4 or 5 years when kits become cheaper and get it commissioned and signed off from a pro.

So... more weight, less horsepower, less range, more cost and an 8h charge time. On a car that's nearly already exempt from VED anyway. This is not and won't ever be a good idea until battery technology / energy density improves. Now please put the idea to bed and focus on Teslas.

For how long? Some countries are already planning on stopping sales of new ICE vehicle by the end of the decade. And as more conversions become available, the prices will fall. For a weekender like the Miata, 160km range is further then most people living in cities would ever drive in a day. On top, it's very easy to spend that much on a performance engine rebuild, evens full rebuild of the Mazda motor with turbo and intercooler will cost that if done professionally.

Quite alot of industrial equipment and even medical equipment still runs on XP or earlier OS's. I used to operate a waterjet machine that would only operate from 3 1/2" diskettes with the appropriate controller files and the data files you wanted to cut. I think that machine was running some version of DOS as that was around 2002. A few years ago I spotted Windows 98 running equipment in a hospital. Hard to believe theyve kept it running all these years!

This sort of thing would genuinely make me want an EV for my weekend motor, during the week I have a works van, which does need the range and size etc.. but on weekend I love my car, however sadly I know that petrol is not gonna be the way forward, but I don’t like “typical ev” this, this is great, a nod to cars we love already, with a modern electric engine, but still fun.. Thank you for this video Jonny, and thanks to the guys at zero ev, for giving me hope for the future
