In this video, Pioneer Field Agronomist Matt Montgomery shares his thoughts on how to go about evaluating fields and corn crop after significant soil saturation events, especially after the heavy rains parts of central Illinois recently experienced. One symptom of over saturation is the browning/yellowing/purpling of corn plant leaves. This can be an indication of significant root injury from low oxygen environments as a result of saturated soil conditions. Utilizing a spade, digging up plants and looking at roots is another way to evaluate saturation. A final way to survey fields is by looking at satellite imagery of the field post rain events. For questions on soil saturation events in your fields, reach out to a local Pioneer sales rep or Pioneer agronomist.
