Henry Stillman is one of my absolute favorite side characters ever. You only ever hear him over the radio and only if you choose to stick around and listen, but if you do, you get one of the most memorable, heart wrenching performances and stories. I mean, you can argue it's a design flaw, but if an auto-turret doesn't have any sort of proper IFF system and is just firing at anything that moves within a certain set of parameters, a limited range of motion helps cut friendly-fire incidents down to mostly those who didn't get the "don't cross this line if you want to continue existing" memo.

MINOR SPOILERS FOR THE GATHERING STORM NOVEL! Reading the tie-in novel provides great insight into Daedalus' character. He still maintains most of his memories and emotions as a Chimera, including his love for his wife, Hannah. When the government kidnaps and tortures her in order to lure Daedalus into an ambush, he personally leads a contingent of Chimera to rescue her without hesitation. The two converse, and rather than be disgusted by him, Hannah feels only sympathy and pity for what her husband has become. The way he thinks and acts...it's almost as if his service to the Chimera is a choice, rather than subjugation by the hive mind. He views them as something greater and is proud to be a part of it (hence the "it is beautiful" line when hearing the Pure Forms speaking to him). Whether that devotion is the hive mind twisting his desires or he actually believes that after being forcefully connected to it is anyone's guess. He can also transfer his consciousness into any other Chimera unit on Earth instantaneously and control them. I remember a scene of him swapping bodies across continents while in confinement, for no other reason than boredom.

It's not entirely _unlike_ that. The Chimera fleet gets obliterated with a nuke, but no real remains of human civilization stand. The Chimera are still overwhelmingly stronger and more numerous. This series and your points on it actually serve an interesting comparison point to Crysis, with the Chimera becoming increasingly eldritch, but in a less generic or mishandled way. Also just a hint of Dying Light (especially The Following) with the protagonist trying fighting the foe before he becomes the foe (heck, Hale's hands when he gets telekinesis are 'held' very very similarly to how Crane holds his almost-volatile claws, that animalistic pose that conveys raw power). Now that I think about it, there could be a really interesting set of videos comparing the themes of games you have already looked at with each other, how they create similar vibes.

Another great video as always! Some context from the time though: Retribution wasn't considered "forced" onto the PSP so much as an outstandingly great third-person shooter for it, with an active multiplayer community, and even a cool bonus feature that uses Resistance 2. If you have Retribution on a PSP and connect it to your PS3 with a copy of Resistance 2 in the disc drive, you can "infect" Retribution, adding second analog stick aiming, upscaled resolution, and regenerating health. It was pretty neat! Some of those features have been patched into the PS4/PS5 re-release, but I swear they left less ammo lying around than in the original PSP version. There was also a (not very good) tie-in novel trying to bridge Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, FWIW. It was, unfortunately, written by the same writer who buggered up the Mass Effect 3 tie-in novel so bad that BioWare publicly apologized about (and has basically treated as apocrypha at best since). I don't think you'll be quite happy with how Resistance 3 resolves the dangling threads of 2, but I do think you'll find the gameplay much more to your liking. As someone who used to be a huge Killzone player, even I found the Resistance 1-2 controls pretty damn awful, but 3 is quite smooth. You get the sense some of the folks from the Ratchet & Clank games stepped in and went "Okay, let me show you how a camera system works."

Just a small point, but it could just be me: The whole radio segment... I could only pick up part of it, because of the audio effects placed on it. I don't know the proper terms, but I think it's the reverb(?) or the echo part, that makes it very difficult to make out certain words. I only recently finished Resistance 2 for the first time, and still have very mixed feelings about it. On the positive side, it’s a really unique game and setting that somehow combines both a gritty WW2-esque setting with true Lovecraftian horror, and what feels like a truly insurmountable enemy. The Chimera cannot be stopped no matter how many of them you kill. On the negative side, they removed the weapon wheel. Your ‘squad’ is pretty much forgettable (I just remember the Major, the token black guy, and the token big angry guy with the chain-gun), and most importantly it feels like a truly astounding amount of essential story material is missing. What happened in the 2 years between Iceland and San Francisco? Who is Daedalus, the main antagonist of the game? What is the Liberty Defence Perimeter.? Where is the rest of the United States Army? What is the status of the war? Who is in charge? Who are the Cloven? How did the Chimera wipe out upwards of 168 million Americans in the space of about 2 months of fighting? I know all these questions have answers, but barely any of them are in the campaign. And those that are told rather than shown. Seeing Daedalus’s fleet physically breaching the LDP from multiple sides then launching thousands of spire missiles all across the southern states where 80 million or so Americans were packed into refugee camps should definitely have been something we physically saw and experienced, rather then just heard in a blink and you’ll miss it but of dialogue. We should have had commentary between missions from a Rachael Parker like character explaining how the Chimeras invasion of the USA was progressing like the first game had. As things stand, this game surprisingly felt like it had no stakes. The campaign didn’t like a war involving 14 million human combatants fighting tooth and nail to protect tens of millions of civilians against a much larger enemy swarming them from all sides. It felt like that battle happened months ago, and we’re being left to puck over the bones with a small remnant of very well equipped survivors. I actually read Resistance Gathering Storm before I played this game, and there were parts of the novel that definitely should have formed part of this game’s narrative. We should have seen President Noah Grace attempt to sell out the rest of humanity to preserve is little tinpot dictatorial rump state in the south before Daedalus tore him limb from limb. We should have seen ordinary civilians fleeing the Chimera in mass through cities like San Francisco, Chicago and Washington. And we should have actually seen the US attempt to use everything at its disposal from tanks and artillery to surface ships and nukes to beat the Chimera back, only fail spectacularly as the Chimera overrun the US Coasts, the LDP, and break the back the the last human resistance to their global dominance. And maybe somehow find a way to bring us into contact with the Cloven, while also setting up an organisation like Grace’s Domestic Security Agency as a foil and potential enemy of the Sentinels when Grace tries to sell them out to hold onto his power at all cost.

My god the FOV. It's like wearing blinders. I feel claustrophobic.

Is there any possibility of seeing an analysis of the PSP games? It would be interesting. I feel not releasing "old" games on PC it's a mistake Sony will end up regreting. Yes, I know some games have been released (Days Gone, Horizon Zero: Dawn...) but it's old series (inFamous, Resistance, Kill Zone) that would thrive in the PC enviroment: easy (and, for Sony, legal) access to their games, sales from spinoff media about the series (comics, books... in digital format of course), possible new subscribers to the PS+ for extra goodies on PC (but not the Helldivers 2 deblace again, please). One can dream.

Since you're doing the Playstation games have you considered doing a video on Killzone? Childhood favourite over-the-top soldier guy shooter game for your entertainment lmao

Seeing Dickbutt again after so many years was kinda eye opening. I forgot how dumb as a concept dickbutt was and yet it was still ironically funny to us back in the day..............Suddenly Skibbidi toilet makes complete sense to me :/

I'm not sure if you'll continue to do this, but thank you for not using the comedic music throughout this video. I love your voice and content, but the "funny music" activates me like a sleeper agent and I cant concentrate on the video anymore. Thats why I love some of your more serious (if incredibly dark and sobering) videos.
