Seeing this side of your playing wows me so much. Animals as Leaders on steroids. You probably don’t think much of your playing, but you inspire the fuck out of a lot of guitarists

That side of my playing? That is my playing haha. But seriously that's my natural playing these days and all that tech death and other metal stuff is more something I have to force myself into now. All metal guitar playing still comes naturally but it doesn't grap me as much as that newer stuff. Still, that whole jumping around, dynamic hybrid picking and muting is my way to express myself. What's missing in this video is more chord stuff similiar to Veil Of Maya and some of the more mellow stuff similiar to that The Last Of Us soundtrack with a slightly cleaner sound. I'd say that makes up my current style. Solo stuff is still missing but I'm not into soloing too much, I'd rather hide some licks in rhythm stuff haha

Definitely enjoying the direction you're heading in with the muted hammer on and pull offs, specifically the texture. I feel that the density and clarity of that technique avails itself to building frenetic tension, perhaps for an intro or prechorus. 6:08 is a good example of what i'm talking about.

Yeah I feel the same. Feels more like a build-up than a specific riff. But I think it can be re-written to be both a climax and a more laid-back ambient background thing

Love this, hey Kevin, were there moments during this where you were annoyed by your tone at all? Asking cause i tend to pick extra hard and dig in while looking at my gear when i expect more out of it
@KevinHeiderich
3 жыл бұрын
lol that is an interesting question :D But nope, never. I adjust my picking dynamics to how I feel regarding the music or what I play, never how I feel by external circumstances. Like, that's just wrong haha. So when I pick hard it's because I want to, or because the part demands it, or because there's some dynamic build up. Whatever, but the reason is always the music, or how I express myself through it (and the guitar). Also, the only reason for the video was the tone. Because I liked it so much, I was feeling extra creative that day haha. But overall, I'm seldomy annoyed by my tone, I'd even say never. I don't always like the tone, or sometimes it doesn't work as good as I wanted, but still, I'm not annoyed. I usually dial in a preset at least so long, that I enjoy playing it. You know, some specific tones just don't feel like fun to play? Yeah so the main part of me dialing in a tone is actually finding an amp that feels good or a combination of compressor/drive/amp/cab, and THEN I start dialing in the actual tone. And the last thing, while playing with a great amp or a great tone is great, in the end it's just a tool that helps you expressing yourself. If you have the mindset of "I am actual in control of both the tone and the playing" then you'll probaby never think that it was the tone's fault that something sucks. It's all about ultimate control (over the instrument) and expressing myself these days. That's what guitar playing is about. (For me)

Sorry didn't want to announce anythig as something can always change but for now I'm not really thinking about youtube right now. I just thought I should film this short session. I think I won't upload too much in the future, except when I have some music that's worth presenting or other interesting ideas. But I'm done with that semi-regular upload cycle I had the last year. I'll just focus on myself and music/guitar stuff like I did a few years ago before that and that's it. I'd love to do other stuff but I can't keep up with youtube in order to be succesful with it (like uploading great stuff 3 times a week. That Epitaph acoustic thing showed me that it's not enough uploading an "interesting" video every other month). So back to what's really important to me and that's my music and guitar playing. If I become successful with it, cool, great, but if not then I'm cool with that too :)

@@Alex-yq2uy Hehe have fun man, that's what it's about :) Haha yeah kudos to all the succesful smaller youtube people that don't do it professionally. It's really time-consuming, even just a simple cover video that doesn't have much editing. Even if you have a day job, making videos is a sort of full-time thing. Takes a lot of time and a lot of different skills, which is actually great and also a wholesome experience in a few ways. But that time-consuming part is why I always have to prioritize that and other stuff, which is frustrating for me personally. I mean just making music is a full-time thing, and I noticed that a lot of music youtubers are doing less music and more entertaining content.

@@KevinHeiderich yeah, guys like Davie 504 moved from music to "haha Reddit", though Bradley Hall for example is doing some fun stuff like parodies done in 5 minutes. But dudes that have small audience and keep uploads consistent regardless are hard-workers. Like you or Tom Morello(bass metal covers) or any other dude. But it's really rewarding knowing that you have finally played the song you love!
