Eventful Afternoon at Carlisle Station
28 December 2022
What was expected to be an uneventful few hours on Citadel Station proved to be otherwise.
I'd expected to see mostly passenger trains plus the odd freight or light engine but not a period with very few trains on the Newcastle & Carlisle line.
Before I'd arrived, around 12 miles away at one of the level crossings near Brampton, a car had hit the crossing. Network Rail decided to close that part of the Newcastle and Carlisle line immediately. It would stay closed until around 1:15pm but it would take many hours for Northern to run trains again - even then for just a short period - and sort out their 158s and 156s to get back in the right places to really resume the schedule after 5pm!
This video records trains at Carlisle that afternoon.
