I'm Eventide's resident fossil and curmudgeon. Over the last few days I heard mention of your review and was advised to not watch it; I imagine for fear that I would comment. Well, here goes. As one Tony to another, I first want to thank you for taking the time to take your in-depth look. I appreciate your comments and respect your opinion. That said, we certainly see things differently. When I think of the H90, it's not so much what it is but rather what it does and what I see is the next step in a long history of next steps. In 1974/5 I designed the H910 Harmonizer. It sure wasn't perfect and I wish I could go back and fix some of its flaws but it made sounds that weren't easy and, in some cases, at all possible, to make before. It inspired creativity. I hated the glitches, they embarrassed me and, when newer chips and bigger memories became available, I designed the H949 introducing de-glitched pitch change for the first time. Then ~1980 newer chips became available making it possible to design a real-time general purpose audio processor, the SP2016. Capable of natural-sounding digital reverb (Reverb2016) it broke new ground by introducing new sounds like vocoding, band delays (which I'm happy to say made Suzanne Ciani a friend-for-life), time scramble (I think that's called granular these days), and more. It also introduced the term plug-in to the audio world. It was the next step. Then in the mid 1980s, DSP chips appeared and we designed the H3000. Another next step, new sounds to inspire and delight and, yes, annoy. But, I digress (seems to have become a habit of mine). So, as I said, when I think of the H90, it's not so much what it is, but rather what it does. WRT what it is, Russ, the proud parent of the H90, has already commented below and pointed out that the H90 audio processing is running on a quad-core ARM processor and that is what drives the next step (note that our H9000 flagship has four quad ARMs). What the H90 does is excite me, it inspires me. The new stuff blows me away and I have first hand knowledge of the effort that went into creating it. I've watched as our DSP gurus worked on polyphony. They spent years researching and inventing new ways to track pitch in real time without the usual warbles and funnies. We believe its such an important advance in signal processing that it deserves a name, we call the technique SIFT (Spectral Instantaneous Frequency Tracking). I watched our engineers disassemble and repair an old Univibe so that our DSP guys could emulate it in all its quirkiness. I was amazed (and I imagine you would be too) to learn how many cycles it takes to truly capture the glory that was the Univibe. Our team of developers have spent the last few years also nailing the sound of tape heads (check out Head Space), our old Instant Flanger/Instant Phaser and bucket brigade chips (check out Bouquet Delay (yes, think Hyacinth)). The H9 introduced our first distortion algorithms and, with the extra cycles in the H90, we've advanced digital distortion with an algorithm called Weedwacker. So, for me, when I hear the sounds that the H90 is capable of, I am blown away. It is clearly the next step and I couldn't be more proud of Eventide's team. Maybe you'll find some time to listen to what's new. And, since, like me, you appear to be interested in the nuts and bolts of audio gear you might find my flashback blogs interesting. www.eventideaudio.com/category/legacy-products/flashbacks/ Flashback #1 describes our first rack mount product from 1971, a mere 52 yrs ago; blink of the eye. For something more recent, here's Russ and friends live streaming last November when the H90 was first announced. etide.io/119Live Well, thanks for listening and, especially, thanks for taking the time to care about this stuff and share your research and opinions.

Well I don't quite 'get it' regarding 'I was advised not to watch it?' mode. My opinion is of a piece of equipment I bought and it is my opinion shown in a review with an updated video showing the well hidden processor. I like Eventide gear and have owned three H9's, one Eventide Eclipse, I currently own an Eventide H7600 that cost about $4k at the time and of course the H90 which I bought and paid for personally. Look Anthony, I have no issues with Eventide, but the things I put in my review I really did feel about the unit. It's a good unit and a 7/10 score is certainly not any reflection of rubbish. It sounds great - I not once commented about the tones (or call them effects) being anything else. Think the H90 is great, well then go and use a H7600... which is an incredible product (as you know), as is most Eventide gear I have ever used. As for the processor you will have seen the addendum video update I made that adds to this video. I know from experience that there are many that want to know whats going on inside any product, that want to actually know the warranty in case the equipment was to fail, that actually want to know about the power supply and much more that is NEVER spoken about by others in any reviews. Maybe (probably) because your advisor may not like those points being raised that you were 'advised' not to watch the video? There is nothing wrong with my review that any reasonable person might want to know. I don't sell this stuff, so maybe your friend sells it or, or, or well you figure that one out. Me? All I did was to review a piece of gear in exactly the same way I have reviewed many many other brands and devices and some had scores of 7/10, some better, and some much worse... take the case of the Friedman JJ Jnr amp that I returned to the authorised dealer... it was awful - inside the amp (brand new) had been butchered. Was it right to show that? Darn right it was. The Eventide is clearly in a very different class than that thing. Having to come on here and over and over (with some people) having to justify what I felt is a truthful review is one of the things that is wrong with not only KZitem, but with society today in my opinion. The developer that kindly pointed out the processor omission, said that he would only mention the processor for 'clarity' as it was omitted... he's right of course, but he ONLY commented on that, and omitted all the good points I raised throughout the review and I said that in the follow up addendum. The H90 is a commendable effort for sure, and its very well made in the way that I have seen Eventide made for years. BTW I reviewed the H9 years ago in a similar way. I really don't need to know Eventide's history from anyone and as a customer going back a fair while I put my money where my mouth is - and bought the Eventide gear. Some of the mouths out there don't even own any Eventide gear... and that says a lot for the internet... surely it does. Please understand, I don't mind your post at all, and it's in the good spirit that it should be in a post. It's a very informative post and I am glad that you did post it. You know, since 2009 on music gear this is the singular time I missed the processor on a device - and even looking in the user guide there was no real mention of it all. In any case, please understand that an opinion is exactly that. If I review any piece of gear regardless of brand, I am not someone that will create something that is not as truthful as I could be. I know that every review I have created since 2009 are generally 'unorthodox' (as far as the music retailing sector is concerned) but honestly, I really do like your post and I'm really just an Eventide customer at heart. Eventide have always made great products... Ha I bought three H9's over a period. I never really 'got on' with the wheel :) and the H90 controls are substantially better in my own opinion, not that it matters. So Thanks Anthony for the comments and please don't just assume what some might suggest and DO watch my reviews. I have been asked by many companies to review their equipment, even after they have watched many of my reviews over time and I don't think I can mention one sponsor that ever said I could not create my own opinion of the review. Ans some of those sponsors have come back and asked me to review more gear... so I guess they liked my genuine reviews of their equipment. BTW if there is something specific that is wildy incorrect in my review, bearing in mind the very limited information I have to create the review, then tell me and I'll correct it. Thanks for watching - it IS appreciated.

@@tonymckenzieofficial Thanks so much for your honest heartfelt comments. I respect what you do and how you do it. And I apologize for the tone of my comment. I did feel compelled to express my opinion concerning the value of the H90 and, for me, the value is the new sounds that our developers have made possible. I sometimes feel that everything has been done, that there is nothing new under the sun, and then I'm shown something truly new made possible by an advanced technique like SIFT for polyphony (or SplitEQ in the plugin world). When that happens, well, my eyes (and ears) go wide in excitement. I know first hand the degree of thought, effort and musical sensibility that's necessary for truly breaking new ground. So, thank you for taking the time to dive into the H90.

Eventide Dev here. I'll only comment on what you got wrong about the processing power b/c I don't want misinformation out there. It'd be amazing if we could squeeze all that DSP math out of a 108 MHz chip, but alas, that's just not true. The GigaDevices chip is not the main processor. It's just a board micro controller, and in fact, there are two of them in the box. The main event is an NXP imx8 mounted under the audio board. It's a quad core Cortex-A53 1.6 GHz per core processor (with additional Cortex-M4 coprocessor). The manual is like 4000 pages long. I DO NOT recommend you disassemble to access it b/c of the risk of damage to the unit.

Thanks for this info. I certainly could not find in it the technical notes in the manual I downloaded? In fact I could not find it anywhere about a NXP processor inside the H90 - but that's OK I'm certainly not perfect. But I will revisit this unit and find the processor. NXP processors these days are used in so many devices that I have checked in more recent times. I have looked in many devices since 2009. Since 1981 I came from technology so I guess I'll find that chip for sure and create the video to confirm it all. I noticed in the standard manual that my warranty is void when I open the unit anyway, so warranty? I likely have none and if I damage my full retail paid for device will I even care? Nope. But hey, I appreciate you commenting about this stuff - its pretty rare that I miss a processor but there you go. Thanks and it really was appreciated that you pointed this out and I'm sure it will help many viewers.

Your comment about plastic 6.5mm sockets is correct. I have a Mesa Heartbreaker. It had a horrible crackle that seemed to get worse as it warmed up. So out with the chopsticks and it was the effects loop return jack. Plastic appeared to have worn slightly over the last 30 years and formed a dodgy contact on the switch. Easy fix but shows how the plastic and also the contracts can cause issues. That said plastic PCB mount connectors reduce the cost of manufacture so are here to stay especially with DSP based effects.

I think you've grossly overstated the complexity and learning curve of the UI. I am the 50 year old bricklayer you talk about and was able to gig with and edit it easily in a live situation within a week of owning it. It's expensive because the of the quality of the unit and the world class Algos that are used in most professional studios. To compare it to an Ocean Machine is like comparing a Yugo to Ferrari. I don't understand why you're whole presentation of the unit is derogatory. It seems that you're trying to point out faults that just aren't there.
@tonymckenzieofficial

Clearly you don't 'get it' do you. Not a single review or person has previously showed you the internals and the quality of this unit have they. You can't cite even one. So those great algorithms are junk if the hardware is rubbish. I'm not here to convince you? I own and have owned far higher end Eventide gear than this and likely you may have not, so please don't start to chastise me for showing the sides to a device (any device) that no one else ever will. Don't like it? then don't watch it. And as far as the power supply is concerned, make no mistake, that's a cheap power supply (highly likely less than $5 at cost) with a release mechanism that often gets caught and when removing the power supply it leaves the plug in the socket. Thanks.

I think you may have misunderstood my comment. I appreciate the gut shot and your opinion. I was pointing out that for a unit this complex, the UI is logically laid out and simple to use. You are correct in saying that world class Algos are nothing with shythe hardware, which you also pointed out was top notch. To compare the H90 to the Ocean Machine is not a fair comparison at all. The price and sound quality difference between the two unit is vast. The OM is great for what it is which is an entry level effects processor that is cheaply made. The H90 is a pro level piece of kit that further bridges the devide between pure studio processors and live application effects. I do enjoy your channel.

Me myself finds it silly to have the input/output green led levels at the BACK of the unit, where everything else is at the top/front. Best place to find me is fill in the form on my website and I'll replay then I always reply to emails in general. Thanks for the kind words etc. and thanks for watching.

What’s the difference in running this unit vs an M2 IPad with say the SSL 12 and all the eventide plugins running in AUM or a daw. I mean besides the different form factor? Is there something in the H90 that processes audio better than in the M2 IPad paired with the SSL 12?

Thanks for this review. I always find more info, and better info in reviews that turns on every stone. The rest of the reviews are equivalent to manuafacturers own ads. Eventide is the don of smokes and mirrors, and obfuscating info. I remember well, an old review on Thomann site (now, mysteriously removed however) on their 5.000 USD grand flagship H8000 rack (or something, maybe it was H9000), that a professional studio owner bought. It was a scathing one star review. They just "ported" software into hardware, and numerous other softare plugins at fraction of the price sounded way better. First: Eventide still is adamant about having polarity reversed for a guitar pedal. It's not centre negative (however, the Rose pedal was). And it say 12 V - 12W on the power inlet as if this should be some guide to what current it needs. shouldn't it be better to put the actual mA in there as every other pedal manufacturer does? Second: When should manufacturers learn that if making a guitar effect pedal, you must have at least 1 mOhm inputs and not line level inputs at 600K? Which makes the dry guitar signal suck big time. Which it does on all these H series pedals. Yes, it may increase high end hiss slightly, but keeps that sparkle transients. Hey, even BOSS GT1000Core made them 2 mOhm inputs. Even soundcard rulers RME have finally caved in and complied and has their latest RME UCFX II run at 1 mOhm inputs. Finally. At this price, I'd expect both of the above to be fixed. If using ARM then the voltage and current could be tamed even down to regular 9v and modest mA current draw, that's the point of ARMs really. remember: at this price. And people complained about the Klon Centaurs extortionate prices, even second hand. What about this one then? :-) Caveat: huge price anchoring ahead.

@@tonymckenzieofficial You're welcome. Since the power supply is of lesser quality, they (Eventide) could easily dodge this if the input had regular center negative and ran on 9v (which H900 supposedly can run at) and ample mA, then you could use any power supply brick used for all the rest of your pedals. Or any other wall wart. Without having to think twice.

Most guitar players would get better overall tones from a Fractal FM3 MKII. It is only slightly more money. That will only get you world-class effects, but cabs and much more- also of incredibly high quality.

That is an argument to buy equipment at similar price that offers more I agree. The H90 is not really a low cost unit, but for what it does it' really is spectacular. For someone in the studio I would personally prefer the Eventide, but for gigs etc. thats a different thing altogether. Thanks for the point and for watching.

@@frankfrank7921 That H90 is a nice pedal. Pricey but much better than the H9. I got tired of programming and tap dancing (FM9) and built a killer Pedalboard. I will add a Fractal unit once Cliff updates that terrible UI. Impossible to effectively tweak on the fly. My board is easy and fun to adjust and sounds incredible. This is what I have so far- any additional suggestions are welcome. 1. Boss RC-500 Looper- incredible and 32 bit stereo. 2. Boss DD500 dual Reverb Engine. Familiar, easy controls as the RC-500. Identical housing as well. 3. Peterson STROBE Tuner. 4. Boss OD-3 5. Empress ParaEQ MkII Deluxe 6. Immerse Reverberator MkII. The ONLY advantage I would give say a FM9 is that you can have setlists ready to go. Once set up, it is easier to switch to already fully dialed in tones. I am not a pro so at home (coffee table player), a pedal board is more fun as I can easily change individual parameters/effects without having to menu dive. One thing I just did that really helped was to make a legend, on paper of my favorite settings- basically how the dials should look on the pedals, especially that Immerse, for each setting it has. I found too much effects made it sound bad but when I learned to dial them back, it sounds very nice and adds a warmth to the tone. With effects, less is often more. Cheers!

Very nicely done, Tony! I got mine in February and I love it! It is definitely complex, but I find that if I just hook it up and bring up a program that is close to what I want, I can just "mess with it", with headphones on and go by what it Sounds like. After all, Sound is what I bought it for and so far, I've been able to pretty much nail what I'm after. I agree with you about the pwr supply. I can't believe that anything that costs this much doesn't have an On/Off Switch. I use it mainly in the Studio which means I' constantly having to plug it in and unplug it. That, I don't like at all! I have "Liked" and Subscribed. I especially like your down to Earth, honest presentation. Here is a piece that I wrote & recorded using one Telecaster, on 4 tracks, through the H90. kzitem.info/news/bejne/mWpulqaPqYtzdZwsi=VdtmRL9Ig3jg4hM5

Thanks for the post - its a very good post and shows how you use the H90 which will help many guys. Ha I get that about just 'using' the H90 of course... these days there is so much stuff and manuals are often very thick spending the time can be hard. Yes the on/off switches are these days getting rarer... and just IMO it's a sort of cost saving direction. Crazy because some cheap units do have them and some more expensive units don't. Weird. I like the on/off for exactly the same reasons as you too. Thanks for the example track... that's a great addition for guys to take a look at... and it all sounds cool to me - laid back and a nice 'drive' :) You'll know what I mean... At this price you expect close to perfection, but as usual they can't resist cutting corners. A poor power supply is an easy fix, the lack of a touch screen and a full manual on how to use it are not as forgivable. Can’t say I care for eventide or any multi effects pedal. H9 sounded okay but was a big disappointment in my opinion. Just learn how to use the effects in the analog world. This is a crutch for most people in my opinion. 1000 I could by a brand new amp.
@tonymckenzieofficial

Well, do own a H7600 processor in the studio, and that is a very powerful device. Personally I had at least two H9's and I never really used them much generally because of the faffing about re the control, which I always felt was compromised. great sounds but... I also have a Ocean Machine that really is not the same by a very long way, but it's sort of similar if ou want it to be so to speak. And I tend to (at least in the studio) add effects after the recording rather than 'in' the recording which makes more sense to me. Yes 1k could buy a pretty cool amp... thanks for the post and for watching.
