My mom was born in the late 50's. Because my nana had endured so much racism growing up, she didn't teach her kids Spanish. Now, it's one of the biggest regrets of her life. As I've gotten older, I've felt that disconnect and that emptiness, more and more. I do feel a need to reconnect to that identity and culture. I have family in Mexico that I've never met, just because they don't speak any English, and my Spanish is nowhere near conversational. I feel so embarrassed when I walk into a store and people speak to me in Spanish, only for me to not be able to respond at all. You definitely get treated differently. It's unfortunate that we should have to work so hard to reclaim the language, but I think it's definitely something that we should strive to do. I know that it would make me a much more whole person if I could fluently speak Spanish. I would feel complete.

You cant have it both ways! Your grandma did NOT experience racism, based on your comment! She experienced ethnocentrism. That is: if you live in our country, conform to the prevailing language & culture! My family experienced it too when we came to America, and we are white (French-Canadian). Mexican American here, born and raised in Virginia. Parents are from a small municipality in the suburbs of the Mexico City metro area. Growing up my parents only spoke Spanish to me and as such it was my first language and I learned English when I started school. Throughout my life my parents did their best to maintain that connection to my culture and as I got older, I started to fall more and more in love with Mexico. Started learning more Spanish intensely and taught myself how to write in Spanish I learned how to read and Spanish and for a while I even stopped learning English just so my Spanish could improve I had even picked up a natural chilango accent as I was learning and as such whenever I go to Mexico my Spanish is indistinguishable from other native born Mexicans. Now, I’m eternally thankful to both of parents for having raised me and never making me forget my roots. I plan on moving to Mexico as soon as I’m done with school and I plan on starting my family over there even if it’s a little worse than living in the U.S but the advantage in Mexico is the people and my family since they pretty much all live over there. In the end I’m willing to sacrifice some of the things that I have if it means living in Mexico for the rest of my life and I’m lucky that the area where my family is from isn’t really all that dangerous.

I don't know man. The Spanish came over and killed a bunch of the Aztecs and the Aztecs learned the language of the colonizers who killed their people. Yes mexicans are mixed with Spanish but are all mexicans mixed spanish? I don't know , tough position to be in. But then again, the British killed a bunch of Americans and we speak English soooo. But America came from England though. I don't know.

Thanks for calling out this double-bind that us poch@s are in. We hear it all the time. "You should speak Spanish/Wait, shut up your Spanish is horrible." Our Spanish is never good enough for those who judge the parenting choices our parents and grandparents made. So I speak my horrible Spanish and love the looks on their faces when they realize I really do understand what they were saying when they switched from English to Spanish when I got on the elevator. I love saying, "Que tengan buen dia," when it's time to get off the elevator. 😅

They were told “This is America and the language here is English, if you don’t like it or have a problem, go back to were you came from.” My grandparents and parents are from Central America and couldn’t speak Spanish in school or at work. Why learn something that is NOT practical? Learning a language because you self-identify is JUST AS RACIST as someone else telling you to speak ONLY the predominant language. If you live in an area that is predominately spanish, than its a necessary skill. if you do NOT, its not a necessary skill. stop trying to bully people because you are racist and think they should know something they dont wish to know.

Didn't learn Spanish until high school. I was very committed to learning because I didn't want to be made fun of and told that I was a "bad Mexican" anymore. When I got to an okay level after a few years, I got so infuriated when I realized that the guys making fun of me actually spoke broken Spanglish with noticeable American accents. I lost motivation and gave up on trying to become fluent for a long time after. I ended up learning German and Mandarin out of spite just to annoy and confuse people that bitched at me about my Spanish skills, lol. I can speak Spanish at a very basic conversational level now, but German is still my strongest foreign language.

It's likely not exclusive to individuals of Mexican descent; this issue may also resonate with those born in the states of other Hispanic lineage, as well as people of Italian, German, and French ethnic backgrounds. However, I doubt there is a sense of guilt associated with not speaking one's ancestral language in those groups. It seems to be particularly significant within the Mexican community to know how to speak Spanish. Interestingly, this sentiment often comes from those who take great pride in their indigenous roots while overlooking their European ancestry yet place great importance on others speaking this specific European language. That said, there is nothing wrong with being bilingual; there's great advantage in learning Spanish. Just don't make others feel guilty if they don't speak the language.

Here in my city most mexicans dont know spanish lol we speak good or take inspiration from black americans. We love the culture and talk similar to them. We have let go of many spanish/mexican traditioms. Many here are full on American urban culture. We speak English amd listen to rap or metal and have our owm unique culture. Some speak a few words in spanish but most arent attached to spanish or mexican culture. I domt think its sad. I think its life. After all spanish was forced on us by spain its reality . No different adopting other language . I see it everyday many let go of mexican traditions. Its sad at times but i believe its a way to go against tradition and history as a whole . To try and steer away form spanish influece and adopt a more black inspired way of expressing yourself rather than European which many mexican tradional take influence from europe but thats dying out more and more. I definitely feel more connected to african or black urban lifestyle as well i grew up with black homies and mexicans as well amd we always got along . I think its cool when minorities share cultures especially both cultures who have had history of sadness and cultures and identity taken from us with colonialism its a way to say fuck you to the ones who forced it on your people and reinvent the culture or adopt the culture that says fuck the norms(black urban culture) im proud of my mexican heritage but im also proud of being part of this American culture

Though those of us who were not born in Mexico never claim to be “Mexican” tho we spend plenty of time there, know the language, know the music and the food we are 100% American. Our parents and grandparents are the only ones who can call themselves “Mexican “ yet they embrace they’re lives as Americans. We all love both ✌️every generation in our family is held strictly to learning about they’re heritage as our parents parents did to them and they did to us we do to our children and so on for the cultures sake.
