The first and foremost thing in the mind of these guys is, health and safety. Working at a forge barefoot, sparks flying everywhere, sharp bits of metal lying around, great! besides that, what craftsmen.

Mr Alan you as outsider, you saw his hardship. He have made khukuri without using any safety equipment and you can't control yourself to appreciate their hardwork but the sad part of our Nepali society is they don't respect these people and consider them as untouchables. I feel shame to call myself 21st century's Nepali citizen.

It has always been a subject of some amazement to me, having lived in the Philippines, the abilities of some people to preform endless dangerous jobs without injury! Americans will have "safety" equipment for no use. I was on a job in a nuke plant once and the "safety" harness to keep a man from falling and made of seat-belt like material became entangled in slow moving gears. He was slowly encased in nylon belts tightening over his body and snapping his bones and muscles. Yet I've seen many Phillppinos using meat cleavers all day long working at pace without the slightest injury. They can also open the smallest cans cleanly and quickly with this huge instrument. Don't let insurance agents design safety equipment!
