There is a measurement where in 1888 the Champions were awarded 10 performance points, 9 for runners up, 8 for third, down to 1 for 10th and in each subsequent consecutive top ten finish season, the points are accumulated. However, when a team finished outside the top ten in 2 consecutive seasons, they lost a point. This increased to 2 the following year, 3 the next etc until either they arrested the slide with a top ten finish or lost all their accumulated points. At the end of 2023 that table reads Liverpool [522], Arsenal [519], Manchester United [509], Tottenham [284], Everton [281] Aston Villa {203], Chelsea [195], Manchester City [146], Newcastle United [97], Leicester City [29], West Ham United [28], Wolverhampton Wanderers [9], Brighton [7], Brentford [2], Burnley [2], Leeds United [1]....Everton have been a permanent member of the top six since 1890, last topping the table in 1896, sitting second in 1922, they dropped out of the top five in 1960 but climbed back up to be third in 1979, fourth to 2023.
