The only flats I’ve tried are d'addario chromes. What are Pyramid Gold like?
@blackthorn5709
7 ай бұрын
@@TheMusicianTom If you value a very oldschool sound, they're a good option. Pyramids are nickel and have a pretty thumpy, broken-in sound right out of the pack. This is particularly true of the low E, and the other strings take a little while to balance out with it (similar to several other brands I've tried). Pyramid is a German brand and are actually the strings installed from the factory on Höfner basses (higher-end models at least?), and as such were used extensively by Paul McCartney, so if you're a fan of his sound they're the strings you want. I believe they're semi-difficult to source in the U.S., but are readily available here in the U.K. Obviously the Höfners use a shorter scale set, but they make a standard long gauge set for Fenders and the like (I have them on my Precision). They're up there with certain sets of La Bellas for the purest old-school sounding flats - I've tried both but prefer the Pyramids. The La Bella 1954 "Jamerson" flats are another good option but they're very heavy and I found them to be too much hard work.

I always thought flats sounded dull or barely audible in KZitem clips until I got a set of my own. It depends on the player, attack, and finally amp settings. Love my flats on my P bass.

It's the problem that virtually all instrumentalists have in the modern era of electric instruments. Everyone tailors their sound in their rooms, by themselves. It's gotten to the point where we're convinced that that tone you're hearing by yourself is how the instrument is 'supposed to' sound always, but it's almost invariably in conflict with the other instruments (which always leads to volume wars on stage and during mixing for recordings). Bass is probably the worst offender, because playing by yourself, you naturally want a full spectrum of frequencies, and with rounds you get that, but at the cost of cooperating with the band. With rounds (especially new sets) you're fighting with guitars, with the right hand of the keyboards, and even with cymbals and singing at times. Somewhere in the '80s we started preaching this idea that all stringed instruments had to be as bright as possible and sustain as long as possible. I mean it's ridiculous, look at any older guitar ad or ad for strings and they all say the same nonsense: 'tHeSe sTRinGs HAve So mUCh SuStaiN!!’ or 'LisTEn tO thE SUstAiN oN thaT GUitAr! IT suSTaiNs FOreVEr!!' And when you think about it, how the fck is sustain some holy virtue? It's complete nonsense when you actually think about it. Sure, sustain is going to be valuable in some contexts, but just arbitrarily thinking that any and every stringed instrument is supposed to be ultra bright and sustain infinitely is just bizarre and ridiculous.

@@allrequiredfieldsbrightness is really valuable on acoustic guitars. They dont have to be so new that you get screechy finger noise but old strings eventually become totally dead and useless. The guitar loses all the rich tone and harmonics. Its night and day. Im not an experienced bass player but as soon as i got a bass the very first thing i did was to stick some foam under the strings. Just didnt sound like a "bass" to me otherwise. My favourite bass tones are either upright or electric that are super mellow and dark. I have never noticed sustain to vary on any type of guitar string unless it is a lighter gauge/lower tension.

I have £80 flats on my acoustic bass, like them, but to be honest I don't like the dead sound of foam, my brother has a nice Fender set up like this, but his other Precisions and Jazzes are nicer for me. Mostly rounds or grounds on my other basses.

I love the way Ps sound, but hate how they play and feel, so I've built a series of Warmoth/Japanese Fender Jazz basses with P pickups. I have a fretted maple, fretted rosewood, fretless maple, and fretless rosewood, all outfitted the same way (flats on the rosewood basses, rounds on the maple). If I ever need a P-type sound, I've got it, and they play like the Jazz Basses I love so well.

I’m staring at my P-Bass… Squire 40th Anniversary Gold Edition in Lake Placid Blue, upgraded with Les Claypool Pachyderm Gold EMG pickups, battery box installed in the back, and gold LaBella flats…. And I get the best P-Bass sound… out of my Squire Classic Vibe Mustang in Surf Green strung with… whatever round wounds I bought it with. It’s gonna take a few years to get the LaBellas broken in, I have the Mustang till then. Although I do have that 40th Anniversary’s P-pickup ready to jump into an Affinity or Sonic…. 😂

Day 56 of asking for Paul McGuigan’s bass tone of Oasis NOTE: Don’t use Wonderwall as an example because the bassline was actually recorded by Noel Gallagher and not McGuigan. Also don’t use any baseline from the Definitely Maybe album as they were also recorded by Noel Gallagher. A couple great examples of his bass tone are from the songs Some Might Say, Morning Glory, or any song from the Be Here Now album.
