I also noticed the canopy developed a crack where you drilled the hole. Here's a tip I learned when drilling plexiglass or acrylic: Use a blow torch to pre-heat your drill bit (don't overdo it, doesn't need to be red hot), put the drill on high speed, but apply bare minimum of pressure. If the hole still develops a crack later on, - drill a tiny hole in the crack's path using the same method, file it smooth, then fill it with acrylic glue or epoxy. This will keep it from spreading.

interesting concept that came out pretty well... a few suggestions that might help if you ever do it again. >add a gas strut to the hinge mech on the canopy that way it will hold itself up when at petrol stations ect. >instead of trying to vac form try blowing a bubble. you wont need a buck to form the shape out of just a template to constrain the edge of the bubble to the shape you want. > the bubbles on the polycarb are from over heating it that's why it was hot spots where you're halogens are above. > maybe use rubber well nuts instead of rivets as you could bolt the panels on to the tabs which would make it easier to service/modify the design if you choose. > add a rubber pad under the release lever so it doesn't wear the paint on the tail and make it less likely for the latch to vibrate open at high speed. i love what you've done and appreciate you showing the successes and failures. great job as always

Hi there! Are you into Motorbike custom building, design etc? I am looking for someone who i can work with, who has a clue about frame building and/or design, to realize streamliner superbike, from the cratch one. I am tired of how the motorbike companys/manufactors managed (for almost 150 years now, since the motorbike exists), NOT to use the excellent potencial of a motorbike, in terms of economy and everyday suitability. And thats because they developed in only one direction, they see the motorbike only as a fun device, which for me its unexplainable and a huge waste of potencial. With the bikes low fraction (2 wheels) and low drag (streamliner design) they way for low fuel (battery) consumssion at high speeds, low wear of tires and the entire drive components is free. Not to mention the huge ranges that can be achieved. When u are from Western Europe and interessted about such an projekt, i would be happy when u would contact me, so that we can chat.

Great project! A couple thoughts why vacuum machine might not work properly: 1. Heated sheet must be moved and vacuumed very quickly, like in a second. As soon as sheet touches cold surface it freezes solid almost instantly. Possible solutions: preheat the mold, build a scissors mechanism to move sheet down uniformly and use softer thicker seals. Drop the sheet, valve, shhhh... done! 2. As you already mentioned, vacuum tanks should be several times bigger than the overall mold volume. Using a tank of the same volume as the mold basically means you will get -0.5 bar equalized pressure as soon as you open the valve. 3. Someone also mentioned plastic should be dried at 80 C to evaporate all the moisture out of it to prevent bubbling. Good luck!

What would ventilation be like to rid rider of excess heat in the summer, due to lack of air circulation and greenhouse effect? These are all concerns which need to be addresses before it becomes a useful accessory. Cafe racer have not solved these issues with their bull body fairings and attempts at full body cover for aerodynamics and wind/rain protection. Good luck in your endeavors and future developments. It had a crumple zone, windscreen wipers, seat belt and a full covered safety cell, which kept you almost fully dry. It was the BMW C1. This bike was able to get through traffic like a knife and at the same time keep you safe and dry. It was perfect for commuting through the heaviest of traffic and way ahead of it's time. The trouble was, it was too far ahead of it's time, it made you a laughing stock. The lads at work used to call it the Pope Mobile and you would get howls of laughter from the public you passed as you rode it. One young child even asked me if it could fly ? I couldn't take the ignominy any longer and had to sell it, so it went.

I would have gone to experimental aircraft/glider/soaring enthusiasts and asked how they create custom canopies for their aircraft. I had a home built glider I purchased from another glider pilot and its canopy looked like it had been formed rather simply with out too many complex curves, similar to your final design solution. Your creation reminds me of various science fiction "Egg Shaped" vehicles. As far as the crosswind comments I am not sure but I think your design would actually offer less air resistance than a rider without the canopy. It would interesting to see the difference on a longer trip between how much fuel you use with the canopy and without it. I am guessing your canopy actually increases fuel economy and top speed. Thank you for sharing all your hard work and successes along with all the failures it took to get to the final success. May you continue to create things that bring you and others joy.

With an aerodynamic fairing (enclosed) A 2 Wheeler has an absurd amount of potencial, in terms of speed and economie, and i never, really never understood, how the big motorbike industry/manufacturer havent build jet, a aerodynamic designed, enclosed bike, so that u can drive, at an avarage speed of 250 kmh and comsume under 5l on german Autobahn, of course! And im not talking about those heavy ass 2 wheelers from Zwitzerland, which weights a ton and coasts about 100k Euro, plus they have a lean back position, which it makes by default unstable, i mean a simple, lightweight motorbike, build from the scratch, with a leaned forward position and a very low center of gravity, with an ideal aero shape (teardrop/rocket), so that it can glide thoruh the wind, like a bullet. I have an absolute passion for motorbikes and it was allways my dream to ride fast and at the same time economical. You can't make an enclosed production motorcycle without it being ridiculously heavy for 1 simple reason, crash protection. When a manufacturer makes a vehicle it obviously has to meet certain safety standards, a fully enclosed motorcycle would have to be able to withstand big impacts so it doesn't crush the rider or trap them inside the vehicle, all these reinforcements add a lot of weight and a lot of cost which leaves you with a very expensive and very heavy vehicle. You can reduce the weight by using really lightweight materials but those are significantly more expensive which will drive up the cost even more. I know where I live the government once tried mandating crash bars which also covered the rider's legs, long story short after some crash testing they abandoned the idea because most of the results concluded that permanent leg injuries were significantly more likely since a big a hit would just crush your leg between the crash bar and the bike and probably make you an amputee, not to mention you're now being dragged across the ground by the bike and if it were to catch fire nobody will be able to get you away from the bike which means you'll get burnt alive. Now imagine the nightmare of developing a safe fully enclosed bike and you can see why they're really heavy and really expensive

Not only you can use it on the rain, you can use it in any weather because it also protects you from wind, dust, gravel, etc. When you park your bike, it'll protect your bike surfaces and seat from heat and sunlight exposure. when the rain stops and the sun comes out it will be hot as hell inside, also if you're not home before dark and it's still raining, without a windscreen wiper it will be a nightmare for glare due to the water on the front. It's a great little innovation but not finished yet, needs a ton more work to be versatile....
This is really excellent job, especially in hot sunny countries you can add AC to cool down and help with sand storm ,

I used to work at a hot tub manufacturer. The process for creating the shell was similar. You had to heat the acrylic sheet until it was sagging like your attempt. But the mold had a large vacuum hole at the bottom. Once they had the acrylic positioned they lowerd it over the mold and turned on the vacuum system to pull the acrylic into the mold form. It is a very fast process. In this case due to the shape of your final canopy shell it would make sense to push the canopy mold into the heated acrylic.

An excellent concept. As long as it is safe and non-obstructive. I would use it only in winter and rainy conditions - I like the wind in my face. Snow and sleet hit the face like pins and needles - this would solve that problem. The only thing, on long trips you would have to decide to take it or not - unless it was made collapsable.

I doubt it catches as much side wind as you guys say...I see 400lb meatballs on their massive saddle bagged out cruisers and tbey arent blowing over...this is shaped appropriately as it can be...I doubt it is much worse than loose clothing and a helmet. Air will smoothly travel around the roof....you? Not so much. Unless you are modified for aero lol
@geemy9675

it will probably still catch more sidewind and act more as a sail than a classic fairing + rider, but it could improve drag a lot so it's worth experimenting even if it has downsides.
@itarry4

Yhea might help to reshape the sides so the wind is directed over and behind the bike more. So make it more rain drop shaped so the wind is directed over and backwards rather than pushing against the flat sides. Would probably help with top speed and fuke consumption a little bit as well which can't hurt. Let's face it if the MotoGP teams could make something like this and design it in a way that didn't restrict rider movement they'd be all over it as smooth plastic or whatever material they used is far smoother and easier to control wind direction with than the human body.
@geemy9675
3 ай бұрын
@@itarry4 when you have side wind and you redirect it, it generates side thrust on the bike. as long as it's constant it's ok you can just steer to lean the bike a bit and compensate. the problem is more e with sudden and strong gusts of wind...ideally you would want the rider to be sitting even lower or lean more to lower the fairing and then it's win/win less drag and better sidewind stability. you just have to figure out how to keep some lean angle clearance 😂
