My father told my siblings and I that “heart attacks began in our neighborhood when people got wealthy enough to buy a car whereas before, everyone had to walk to town to the grocery store or take care of business, etc.” He never stopped walking, and today he is still walking 7 days a week for 40 minutes. He is 89.

I travel a lot. I was stunned to see in China, 75yr old ladies walking up Three flights of stairs at McDonald’s . That would never happen in USA. Also I noticed how it is Basically against the law to walk to many USA airports ? You cannot walk from Salt Lake City to the airport, you must take the freeway, it’s against the law to walk on the freeway? Same with Boston and I’m sure it’s like that in many other major cities. So sad so crazy. My dad was born with polio and Dr told My grand parents he would never live. He ended up getting a job delivering mail and walking 4hrs a day for 30 plus years. He retired at 64 and walked 2hrs per day in retirement for 20yrs. He died at 84.

I just started walking a week ago. I walk 6 days a week for 40 minutes straight. If it weren't for the fact it's -20 Celcius outside I'd walk more, but I've already lost weight which is my goal. I'm finding it a positive addition to my daily life as the walking (though not the extreme cold) is pleasant. If you're trying to lose weight like me a good thing to do is to walk briskly, keeping your heart rate between 60%-70% of your maximum heart rate (220 - your age).

Not necessarily. I can tell you that in my area, there is literally NO place to walk along the sides of the road. None. Idk I guess they carved the roads inside a valley between hills. ??? It's very risky to walk around here but I still do it but it's not ideal because I'm always having to monitor and dodge traffic. The fact that it's so hard to find safe and convenient places to walk might have a lot to do with our living in a mountainous, hilly area. This area is better suited for hikers, perhaps.
